Went back home yesterday, some friends came over and we had pizza. Afterwards I decided I wanted to take my car out for the first time in a couple months, but the battery was completely flat. So we pushed the car up and down the street trying to bump start it but it wasn't playing along so we found some jump leads and hooked it up to my friend's corsa which got it going. As we pull off a light on the dash comes on telling me I had no power steering due to it being electronic, so I drove the whole night beetle style. I never realised how much feel power steering removes from the wheel, but it was hard as shit trying to steer it around slow corners. Told the parents to take it to work once in a while to keep the battery going from now on.

This is what I've been telling everyone -- Power steering dumbs down the driving experience. Those who disagree simply haven't driven with manual steering.

Power steering also makes parking and low speed driving not ragetastic.
You've never driven a car with actual manual steering. A power steering gearbox or rack is designed to be used with it, manual steering isn't so it compensates for low speed turning. My Civic is incredibly easy to turn even at a dead stop. It's a bit weird to get used to at first but driving it for a little bit you eventually don't even remember it has manual steering, it just feels like really livid power steering.
Not being two tons of 'merrifat helps too, I guess.

It's probably easy in a relatively small, lightweight car such as the Civic, however I definitely would want power steering (which I have) in my huge Mercedes landyacht. It's just so much easier, however still regaining the feel of the road.
Manual transmission is fun :3
Learned how to drive stick on an old wrangler, god damn there's nothing quite as satisfying as a straight pull from third to fourth on a five-speed

Went to go print off pictures of my car to put at work, and ended up going to get a tasty beverage. I ended up parking next to a red MKI MR2. I snapped a pic and the owner came out and we proceeded to have a nice chat for about 10 minutes. I'll post it after I come back from work.

I love those times.
Found out once I get my first year's no claims in march my insurance is going to be about £1400 if it was insured at my university house, which means I might be able to bring my car to uni

your civic weight as much as a 3yo boy.
try parking the supra without PS and a ridiculusly small steering angle. You'll be happy to have PS.
also, why do you think they made Progressive Power Steering??!! it reduce assistance at speed above 20-30kmh to give you more feel.

The power steering on my mustang is just about a joke.
- Bought new phone on Ebay
- 3 Hours later, normal phone works.
Better cancel that buy. Get my $170 back.

I've driven two tons of murrica without power steering or power brakes. Don't complain about how your baby arms can't turn a steering wheel.
Adaptive power steering is great, I love that they made it. I never said it was terrible, but that's quite different from your standard power steering setup.
so much for taking a couple pictures, fuckin' dark out at like 4
anyways.. holy shit it's going to cost me $300 for 2 rear drums, shipping is a bitch. hopefully i can get the fucking broken lug bolts out because otherwise i'm going to be way, way up shit creek without a boat let alone a paddle
each drum is $90 and shipping is another $100.. i could get brazillian drums for $70 but really saving $40 isn't worth risking stripping out the drums and costing myself another $300 or worse yet stripping the axle splines and having it cost me $500 for new axles and then having to deal with changing axles.
100 dollar shipping? where do you live?
lol
The S2000 revs higher in 6th gear at 50 mph than my Avalon does in 4th gear at 80mph.
Dat lack of OD

bro do you even lift?

I'm in New Hampshire and the rear drums are in Utah. There is an option of doing UPS ground but it would take at least a week longer and still cost $50 and I'm really not too keen on UPS, I've had more than a couple less than satisfactory experiences.

really it doesn't matter either way because i still can't afford it. whatever, i'll figure something out. i'm hoping i can find a second hand set on the samba classifieds or something
Uh... $300 for a set of drums? You could get like 5 for that price.
That's a good seller too, they sell the directly from Summit Racing and Summit only sells quality shit.
You should really look into a local machinist or something and see what he can do for you.
[editline]4th November 2012[/editline]
or what bradley said and get aftermarket drum brakes.
Or get disc brakes.
Or get disc brakes.
There are a lot of bolt-on kits for rear disc brakes on Beetles, some as cheap as you'd be paying for those two drums (The kit I linked only $70 more, and then some additional but cheap shipping charges).

discs in the back and drums in the front sounds like a bad idea and I'm fairly certain what they're selling is EMPI which is more or less hit or miss (more often miss than hit) quality wise.
anyways, as far as the Summit Racing drums, i may go that route. i'll have to look into a bit because i'm really not interested in wasting money but from what i've seen so far they seem fine. it'd just suck ass to buy them, drive on them and then end up having to buy another set because they failed for whatever reason
i find it hard to bring myself to invest money into inexpensive alternatives, there's just way too much of a chance that it's a shit knock-off casting from China or Brazil
The Summit Racing ones are Beck/Arnley, a HIGHLY respected aftermarket parts source stocked in 90% of auto parts stores across America.
As far as the disc brake conversion, they are of decent quality and Kustom1warehouse has been the place my VW friend ordered his bits from. You can get a better deal on their website I think, and also get it in any pattern you'd like since chevy pattern on VWs is overdone imo. Stock VW pattern would be cool, could also do Porsche pattern (but wheels would be hard to find).
Or get disc brakes.
What pinhead thought drums were a good idea?
Pain in the ass to work on, but i guess they're cheaper
Took some pics of the focus after I washed it, I think it looks suuper nice in these :D
