Anyway you can't have a diesel without a turbo, it's so slow I can't even fathom how slow it is.
Also it looks great.
It looks clean. I don't know about the interior but if the body and insides are in vary good condition your set. I've seen a lot of old muscle cars turn into rust buckets. If you were to get it and at least keep the body and interior in tip top shape you won't lose money on it. You can always pull the engine and tranny to do an upgrade. but if the frame and body have major damage then your looking at spending a lot.
Yeah I have to take a good look at it, but from what he says it's basically in mint condition. I'll go up there as soon as I can.
Volvo!
Definitively the 244, it's a beaut.
I love it, although it has a 318. If you want to DD it, or drive it without worrying about that awful of gas mileage then it'd be fine. Ups are that it has power steering and power brakes, and I'm assuming its pretty rare since its a 4 speed, so I personally would be calling that guy right now.
I will indeed use it as my DD, but do you think it could be any fun as well?
Comparing this car to the z31 I am still speculating on buying the plymouth is 170 kilograms heavier and has 63 more horsepower basically which'd likely be more fun?
The z31 at 1540 kilograms and 163 HP or the Plymouth at 1710 kilograms at 226 HP.
Plus I get the z31 for 1 493$ or less, but I have yet to have a mechanic or me taking a closer look at what may be the issue with it..
It's probably in pretty good condition considering I know the guy who purchased it was REALLY good with cars and wouldn't buy something hopeless for his son.
(The son doesn't have time to fix it so since we are friends with the family I get a really good deal as long as I promise not to scrap it.)
FUCKING CHOICES MAN, WHY CAN'T I HAVE ALL THE CARS?

I've owned a z31, and as awesome as they can be, I wouldn't exactly recommend it. I had a ton of strange electrical quirks (they loaded that car with a ton of 80's futuristic crap that just fails after a while) the suspension is almost ALWAYS shot, and aftermarket performance parts for that car are very expensive as only a few brands produce them. There are still no legit z31 coilovers, for example, you have to cut the factory strut assembly and weld it onto a set of s13 coilovers. If you want a bone stock 80's sports car that feels rather gutless and eats gas, buy the z31, but you could spend your money on some more worthwhile choices. I'd pick the plymouth, personally.
Really good advice
Thank you for the input!
It's the 300zx 1986 non-turbo and non-science fiction version that I am looking at, but there are still as you say a lot of electrical components that will likely need attending to. I've heard horror stories about mixing metals that corrode in the z31 engine as well.
Suspension on it is working fine and it's in pretty good condition, but I will encounter the issues you bring up eventually.
This has made me seriously reconsider things, thank you!

No worries, I had it for about a year and it was a really fun car. I too thought the suspension was fine until I replaced the majority of my subframe/control arm bushings, it was then that I realized it wasn't dampening that was causing the sloppy suspension. They seriously are underpowered cars though, they're haunted by the 80's era emissions equipment that saps ridiculous amounts of power. It took one user over $4k to make 200whp NA. Seriously though, 120whp on a 3.0l v6? It just isn't right. :(
I went out and voted for the first time in my life today.
:911:
Wanted to vote, but turn 18 next month :\
So close.. lol
I went out and voted. Vermin Supreme, 2012.
this morning the grand prix blew it's water pump
tonight, my accord blew its water pump.
New timing belt for accord now :(
I'm probably be going to be getting my license and first car in the next few months, and it's probably going to be an automatic, and I'd actually prefer it for my first car.
Thing is though, is that I really want to get used to driving manual later on, I'm just not confident enough to have one as my first car. And if the only car I own at that point is my first car, an automatic, you can probably see where this is going. What would be a good way to get access to a car with a manual transmission to learn to drive with when I feel I'm ready?
You buy it?
I'm not sure how that'd work though. If I traded it in for the automatic I had, I'd be getting into a car I had no experience with, and I'm a bit worried about stalling in traffic or fucking up my clutch like someone who had just gotten their license because I'm not used to driving a manual, especially if it's my only car and I'm relying on it to get me everywhere.
If I bought a second car, I'd have to insure both cars I think, and that seems like it'd be pretty expensive and probably not worth it. I think the ideal thing is for me to somehow already be familiar with driving a manual, before I did something like trading in my only car for one.

You make it seem like a manual transmission is the most difficult thing in the world. Its really about weather youre willing to adapt and learn; get out of the comfort zone.
I used to think the same until I got mine. Then I was stuck with it so I had no choice but to learn. Easier than youd think
Problem with that valiant is that it's a 4 door, not exactly the most wanted car out there, even with a 440 and all done up it would still be worth around 5-6 grand, I'd offer 3000, go up to 3500, its been painted so you have to check out how well it was done, 318 could be worn out, big plus with this is that it has the 8 3/4 (make sure you can identify that it indeed has a 8 3/4 and not a 8 1/4). I have to agree that it would be a sick DD though.
[editline]6th November 2012[/editline]
There has been a guy right next to my school who has been trying to sell a 4 door dart, same year and done up quite well, for about all this year and half of last year, nobody ever comes and looks at it, it just sits there, outside.

Yes, I drove two differenet CJ5s for 2 hours each and I had it down. I got into a Volvo 740 with a 4 speed od and drove it with no issue.
It's like riding a bike, you get it down once, it doesn't take long, then you have it down for good.
Alright, sounds pretty manageable. I mean, I understand how it works and it really doesn't seem difficult at all, it's just getting actual seat time and getting comfortable enough with it to drive in traffic and not damaging the clutch. I'm sure I'll be able to find someone that wouldn't mind me getting used to a manual by the time I'm ready to get my second car, especially if it should only take a few hours to really get used to.
Thanks.
Acutally got to see how much damage that waterpump did, It literally like exploded in half or something. Over thousand bucks total cause of waterpump, timing belt.
Sprayed coolant all over my airintake's pipe all over the top of the engine cover and all over my radiator
I JUST FUCKING CLEANED IT A FEW DAYS AGO D:<

Christ, hit a massive rock (or what felt like a massive rock) with likely the header of the CRX. Trying to crawl down my parents' driveway, then get yelled at by my dad. Welp.
But I hung out with Borellus and Jap all night so it's been a fun day otherwise.

Yeah I know it isn't the most sought after American car, but with the country I am in, and the budget I have, so far this is what you get in good condition. To find great old cars cheaply I'd have to break in to several barns around the country. :v:
I am awaiting more pictures of it today so that I can inspect it closer, and if I decide it's worth it I'll go up there and take a look. (5 hour ride..)
I am also looking into another old beaut I've found, It's a bit weaker and heavier than the valiant sadly..

Goes for about 4400$ as well but it's only at about 148 HP instead of 229.

Hello!
Dodge Aspen -76
in it is a tuned 318 motor and a corresponding gearbox that I can not remember what it's called.
Inspected and tax-exempt.
Other cams in the engine second pistons and various gadgets and stuff in the engine.
New tires all around on cragar rims. who barely have rolled. light fixtures with white teddy in the ceiling, a little blotchy in decor but nothing serious and nice frame, no rosthög! (Rost=rust, hög=pile)
Even though it is a real looker the weak engine kind of puts me off.
I'm gonna request pics of this cars frame as well before I decide to go up there, it's also a 5 hour drive away.
Links to both cars, might someone want to take a look themselves.

huyu if you are mechanical, you could always do an engine swap on either one of the cars you buy, that Aspen is super clean, but I'd probably offer like 3k, since its nothing special, a 318/904 transmission combo. All in all, I'd go with the valiant, more space, more power, and its very clean.
Sadly I am not that mechanical myself as of yet, and haven't got access to a workshop. Even if I did, purchasing a new engine etc. would send me flying over the budget.
So I am still leaning towards the Valiant.

it might not be special in the US, but it's an import over here and there's barely any of them.

You won't damage your clutch in the two hours it will take to get the hang of it. I autocross my car. I powershift, dump the clutch, kick the clutch, do burnouts. I've always ended up doing more damage to my clutches than I originally did learning to drive.
well it can be a bit of a shocker on the trans when you dump it really hard.

You will probably have more problems with that bmw than your merc.
Besides, your merc is cool.
