Yeah I called around 3 different stores today and they all said they are around $180-$250. And I drive a 2000 civic which is a very common car I thought so I have no idea why they are so expensive.
Go to a junkyard and pull a starter.
1
Attempt to start the car, and pay attention to the lights in your instrument panel and interior. Electric motors, supplied with a certain voltage, will always try to spin at a given speed. If the motor's internal wiring develops an internal short -- one wire connects to another inside -- the wiring will draw more amperage from the electrical system than it otherwise would. This will draw energy from the rest of the system, most noticeably, the lights.
2
Listen for a chugging sound while cranking. While a certain amount of chug is normal, particularly at low cranking speed, a chug accompanied by dimming and brightening lights may indicate a mechanical failure in the motor's bearings. If this is the case, you may be able to get by for a while by hitting your starter with a hammer from underneath in order to break the starter shaft loose. But, probably not.
3
Listen for the solenoid click. Starter solenoids typically let off a very noticeable click when they engage; this is the sound of the gear drive engaging and the electrical contact closing. If you hear a click, you can all but rule out the solenoid as a mode of failure. A series of rapid clicks indicates a solenoid rapidly engaging and disengaging. Most of the time, this indicates a lack of power from the battery, but it can indicate a problem with the solenoid.
4
Listen for grinding and freewheeling. A grinding noise indicates that the starter's drive gear isn't disengaging from the flywheel's gear teeth, or isn't engaging the flywheel completely. Along with or separate from grinding, you may hear a whirring after starting that sounds something like an electric motor or jet engine. The starter's drive gear has a freewheeler in it that keeps your engine from over-running the starter motor and driving it like a generator. The whirring you hear is the sound of the gear failing to disengage, which may indicate a bad return spring or solenoid.
5
Have your battery tested. There's no sense checking the voltage yourself; even a completely fried battery can exhibit near-normal voltage while not cranking, and you have no way of knowing exactly what the voltage drop should be while cranking. The simple route here is to remove the battery (if necessary) and have it tested at your local auto parts retailer. But, even if you have a bad battery, don't assume that's the sole cause. A starter with chronic high-amperage draw can drive the last nail into an old battery's coffin, and kill a new one. Simply replacing the battery may solve the problem for a while, but a bad starter will eventually kill the new one, too.

Ahh, that explains why it worked after he hammered on it with a pole. I'll somehow make my way to a junk yard and pull off a starter from there tomorrow.
Thanks

Lol it's been half a day now and still nothing. Snow storm, my ass.
Whenever I turn my key to start my engine, I can hear a click in the engine bay which sounds like the solenoid is working, and the lights dim slightly which seems like the starter is pulling power from the battery, but it won't even crank at all.
But it can't be a battery problem because last time it happened a boost didn't help and it didn't crank until the guy was jamming something down into the engine bay.
I might go to a junk yard and pull off a solenoid to install, but I'm wondering if it would be worth it to pull off the whole starter and change mine. I just don't want to have to pay extra for the whole part and then pay the fucking core fee.
Any advice?
the clicks can be relay solenoid you mis intepreted, really.
put the car in neutral and exitate the starter solenoid yourself with a long wire, that way you'll see exactly what happen. Bad power cable to the starter (it might corrode over the year) can give you intermitent starting problem too.
Is it just me or do Landrover make the best 4x4xfar? I drove (well mostly was driven around in) an Evoque and a range rover, and whilst I can't say anything about offroading they were a lot more comfy than any Lexus/BMW/merc/softroader I've ever been in!
Making a spring-album for my car that I can listen to when cruising. Radio works fine and all but it only seems to pick up a stable signal when in the lower frequencies. Anyone have some good hits that I can cruise around with? Must be some old 60's or 70's stuff!
Already found this which is a needed song.

Have a couple more, of course. Anyhow any ideas?

Pulled out my starter motor and had a part store test it and it is working fine. I guess it could be the battery but then I don't know why it didn't start when the guy boosted it earlier. I'll try boosting again, or taking my battery in to get tested.
First winter storm of the year! About time, Minnesota!
[sp] even better, I get to work tonight with the PD. You roll your vehicle? I'll be there[/sp]
People can't drive in snow there, copserman?
Ok tried boosting my car again, the electrical doesn't work even with a charged battery hooked up, the radio and lights aren't even working.
Any suggestions?

ffs have you even read my post. Just trying to help you with helpful advices.
do what I said, wire, battery pos terminal, starter solenoid.
if it turn over, starter+bat is good, wiring is bad (relay and shits, maybe even the key barrel)
if not, starter power wire might be bad, starter might, battery might, bendix might.

Similar to this? I fixed mine by jiggling the wires at the back of the positive terminal connector.
Already posted this in the work thread, but I figured it should be here too.

A 2000 Honda Civic starter for $180? Considering it's basically identical from 88-00, I sense you're getting fucked. Should be at least $60 less than that for a decent one.
Junkyard a starter. All manual starters interchange from 1988-2000 and all automatics interchange from 1988-2000, but you can't cross between tranny types. Grab a cheap 20-40 buck junkyard starter and throw it on. If you pull it yourself, grab all the shims (if there are any).

Oh, well, that sounds like your battery. If it's gone dead, it will be hard to charge and start. Happened to my CRX when I got it, swapped for my Civic's hot battery. Fine now.
tried boosting my car and got nothing and got nothing. the stereo and lighting isn't even working at all now. I don't want to buy a battery only to find out it is another underlying problem
Anyone in the Metro-detroit area, if you see this car, please make a call to the number. Its a buddy of mine, and i'd like to see him get the car back.

Oh god a friend of mine got his Lamborghini Aventador detained by the cops for failure to pay import tax.
Well if he can afford a few Ferraris and an Aventador I dont see why he can't pay a simple 200% tax.
