I think the biggest mistake was making a moba a full 60 dollar release.
I feel a lot of the appeal of the genre to people is that it's free. I tried the beta when it was a thing, and it was Free-to-Play fun but not 60 dollars fun.
There really needs to be less of an immediate jump to "this is an Overwatch ripoff". We've already seen this shit happen with every stylized shooter being a ripoff of TF2, even if it plays completely different, has a different artstyle, different characters, etc. And now I feel like it's happening again, and is going to happen again if any other similarly functioning or similarly looking games get announced.
Literally the only similarities I've seen among Battleborn, Overwatch, and Paladins aside from a couple character/ability similarities (and I do only mean a couple, like the Paladins knight guy having a horizontal energy shield. Overwatch doesn't have sole ownership of shit like "soldierman with assault rifle" or "character piloting a mech" or "man with beard") is that they're stylized first person shooters with classes that are unique characters. That's pretty much it.
It's just another trend, like all the WW2 games in the 2000s, or all the modern military FPS games, especially after Call of Duty 4 came out. Call it capitalizing on the popularity of Overwatch or whatever, but don't call it ripping it off, because that's not what that is. Legend of Titan is a ripoff, not Battleborn or Paladins.
Battleborn seems like a game that really should have been f2p.
Would it last longer if it was released way before overwatch??
Would it last longer if it was released way before overwatch??
It wasn't very popular to begin with but Overwatch definitely killed it.
It probably would have been way more popular had it released at the peak of the Borderlands hype
Gearbox is trash.
Except for opposing force I can't think of another actually "great" title they have delivered.
Borderlands, as it was promised way back when was INSANELY different to what was actually delivered. What we got was a world with almost no interaction and where it felt like some sort of molded environment with nothing special. I'd say that was as a direct result of consolization.
Little surprise their latest title does the same.

There's also Gigantic and I hope they don't fuck it up cuz it does look quite fun
When I looked at Overwatch I saw some compelling level and character design, with an original plot idea all backed up by some nice promotional materials. Could the VA's and writing for the animated shorts be better? Yeah, sure it could. But it's got still got charm.
Oh come on, I enjoy Overwatch's gameplay but practically every single one of the characters is a stereotype and the plot is as generic as they come.
Keep in mind that Overwatch spawned from the cancelled Titan MMO, so it could be fair to say that Blizzard has had character concepts for some of the heroes since they started working on Titan.
Also, just because something was announced sooner doesn't mean it started development sooner.
To be fair, I think Titan/Overwatch has them all beat by a huge margin :v:

Paladins is definitely worth a try, I've been having lots of fun with it and I trust Hi-Rez with the game.
They're really trying to make it fun while listening to the community. There's been several new nerfs and buffs and the new characters are pretty fun, albeit a little OP. (I'm looking at you Bomb King.)
Sure they may have fucked up a bit in the past with Tribes, but they came back and absolutely fixed the game.
Also, Paladins is free so you have no excuse not to try it.
When did Gearbox get so bad, and why? What happened to the good ol' days of Opposing Force, Brothers in Arms, and Borderlands 1?
Randy Pitchford is just as bad as Todd Howard.
"All units be advised, feminism is awesome!"
Holy shit. How have I not heard of that. I think the potential for Battleborn jokes aren't dried up yet.
Randy Pitchford is a psychopath who literally outright will ignore any and all criticism and go above and beyond a lie to sell a game, even if it means misrepresenting a product, or insulting someone by lying about them because they criticized his game
Todd at worst stretches his anus around the truth to exaggerate for marketing
Todd really isn't that bad
Todd doesn't lie, he's just overly ambitious and misinterprets what his development team says.
He's like that little kid that hears about something, sees something that looks a lot like it then blows its proportions out the window.
Honestly everything he's said is true, its just exaggerated due to his misunderstanding at times, he's only the director and producer so its understandable he might get a few things wrong with the relation of scale.
Skyrim does has infinite quests (first time the radiant system was introduced, it is unlimited in how many it can give, but the pool of what it can give is small).
You can climb that mountain, and that one, and that one.
The building stuff in FO4 does just work.
Fallout 4 is an RPG in a sense, no way is it a traditional RPG though.
And so on, he doesn't lie, he's just really really optimistic in what he says.
[editline]1st July 2016[/editline]
Compared to the previous titles, it doesn't.
Only loading screen you'll see is the initial one when loading in your save, moving from exterior to interior isn't like how it was in FO3 and Skyrim, the game doesn't throw you to a loading screen per say, it just blacks out for a few seconds (or minutes if you've modded your game to fuck and theres a lot of script heavy shit going on in the background as it loads in the new cell).
Again, its kinda exaggerated but compared to the previous games they've made, FO4 has minimal loading screens and loads MUCH faster.
Oh boy, what is it like to be so naive?
The developers, while the game was dying, FUCKING IMPLEMENTED A PREMIUM CURRENCY THEY SAID THEY WOULDN'T.
about that one.... http://www.gamespot.com/articles/battleborn-microtransactions-and-dlc-plans-detaile/1100-6435708/
they clearly were planning to add them, this is a month before release
strange theyd send so many mixed messages about this game. not only is it garbage but it's been buried in so much misinformation from the devs and people who hate it as a meme that you cannot tell what its suppose to be any more
I don't understand how a company responsible for Aliens Colonial Marines, Duke Nukem Forever, and now battleborn, has such a rabid fanbase of defenders
is Borderlands really so great to people they will look past all that

Gameplay-wise for Borderlands 2 and for it's Co-op. Yes, yes it is. The looting is fun and satisfying and doing it with friends was always a blast!
Plot wise? FUUUUUUCK NOOOOOO. That shit was awful, cringy, and filled with what Anthony Burch thinks is "Funny". Don't get me started on his writing. You know what a wacky, zany, cartoon M-rated Mad Max inspired Alien planet with Diablo style looting needs?
Forced in Feminism!
I can think of all the games with plots of wasted potential, or just bad writing, or poorly-written or obnoxious characters.
But for me, Anthony Burch takes the whole cake as the worst writer I have ever seen in the gaming industry, both as a writer, and as a person if his Twitter account is to go by.

Do they though? From what I've seen on FP and Reddit Gearbox is pretty much universally reviled.
To answer your question about Borderlands though: in my experience there isn't much overlap between people who play and enjoy Borderlands, and those that play other Gearbox games. Borderlands is a sort of ubiquitous game that everyone I know buys because it's an enjoyable coop experience for atleast a few dozen hours, while I know very few people who bought any of the games you listed.
Oh boy, what is it like to be so naive?
i remember the writing was wonk but i'm not sure i remember forced in feminism in Borderlands 2 tbh

It's actually kinda cute to be honest. Dude's got heart at least. I can't say the same for Randy or Peter. Peter is just a moron and Randy's a scumbag.

Actually I take that back Peter has his heart in the right place. Fuck Randy though.
Don't think it changes too much other than the fact that even Turtle Rock thinks Overwatch is better than Battleborn.
That really doesn't seems like an odd thing.
Battleborn bored me just from watching TB's WTFis video, particularly whenever he reloaded the AR. That alone seemed to make it boring, so lets not even mention the fact that its only PvE. (correct me if I'm wrong on that)
Overwatch just looks like so much more fun in every single way...
Gonna play devil's advocate here: Battleborn was announced before Overwatch, as were most of the characters in the side-by-side comparison segment of the video. If anything, that makes me think Blizzard copied Gearbox.
Well, some heroes in OW are based on Blizzard's own heroes I think, although some do look like you've seen them elsewhere, like for example Junkrat, that imo at least, seems to play a lot like TF2's Demoman.
But in another example, the guy with the hook and mask in OW, seems to be based in Diablo's Butcher, or DotA's Pudge.

There is PvP in BB. OW is more like TF2 where the modes are simple attack/defend and koth, while BB's PvP is more akin to Monday Night Combat and it's sequel, aka, mobas with shooter controls.
I think it kind of sucks the situation BB is in right now. I think it looks pretty fun and I would like to play it, because it reminds me a lot of MNC. But with the low population and low popularity, I don't think I can justify spending money on it.
