• What creeps you out the most in Urbex?

When I was younger, about 5 years old, my step-father worked for a large construction company that specialized in larger buildings such as hospitals. One day my dad (step-father whom I know call my dad) took me to work with him, for some reason I can't remember, there wasn't anyone working that day; He was working on demolishing an old hospital, but they haven't started yet, they were still gutting the building. He took me down to the basement where they kept all the dead bodies on pans. (Keep in mind there were no lights, only his flashlight) I was so creeped out, the walls consisted of the small hatches with pans that held the bodies, literally covering the entire wall with the little doors. My dad freaked me out by saying "Dracula lived here." (I was 5, didn't know better, the thought scared me) We looked through the hatches and saw the body pans and pulled one out, which actually, I shit you not, had a blood stain outline of a body. My dad is a creepy fucker so he took it out and we took it home where it lay somewhere in a pile of garbage for months. There's my story, it freaks me out to this day, much like all hospitals, but I hope my grammar was okay and you enjoyed :D
This may be a late reply but oh well. Back in the summer of 2002 my brother and I went hiking in the Appalachian mountains. I, already have been urban exploring since 1995, my brother, 2000. We had come across an old scrapyard. From the looks of it, its been long since abandoned. We planned on exploring it when the sun went down. Until then, we had set up camp off in A nearby treeline. We synced our watches and planned to head out at 11pm. Around 9pm, we heard footsteps. REMINDER, we are in Buttfuck nowhere, Virginia. The footsteps of at least 4 different people. All of them seemed to be breathing heavily. Both of us scared we turned off our light, grabbed our rifles, and waited. They seemed to get closer to our tent. Safety off, forget Trigger discipline. We waited a moment thinking the mystery people were getting ready to kill us. LITERALLY tears rolling down my brothers face, the footsteps resume but they sound like they were getting further away. Relieved, we waited about thirty minutes and then resumed our normal activities waiting to go into the scrapyard. Finally we got out of our tent and dimmed the light, we headed into the yard, there was a one story building, no bigger than a gas station, [the office where you purchase stuff]. There was a wretched smell coming from inside the Building. We decided to split up. My morbid curiosity had drove me to climbing through an open window bringing me into the small building. My brother went exploring in the yard. It showed definite signs of recent use. This unnerved me. noticing something on the adjacent wall was a LARGE splatter of blood. I KNOW WHAT THAT SMELL IS NOW, Behind a counter connected to the wall was a body. I can actually remember what was going on. The body was putrefying in a puddle of blood and water. or just blood. I gathered my bro and managed to get a signal out where i was. I called the local authorities and led them here with a flare gun we brought in case of emergencies. They sent a few units over and removed the body from the premises. My brother and I were offered a ride the nearby town. We accepted the offer but requested that we go and pack up our camping equipment. We found our tent, but it was ransacked. Probably by those mystery people. I actually went back there in 2005 during daylight hours, and found a bullet casing. and some old photos of what appeared to be a man and a wife. these were next to the spot the body had laid and rot. ALSO,I believe I was nearly Murdered by a small cult.
Wait so you were in the middle of buttfuck nowhere in VIrginia. (my state :3) and there was a scrapyard and buildings? anyway what guns did you have? where you gonna kill something to eat, or was it for protection? (bears, people, etc.)
I had an urbex encounter recently at this abandoned house from decades ago with my two mates and we walked in through the garage I think and it had two stories, the upper level and then the basement. Basically all the paint was peeling and the insulation had fallen out everywhere, except for the fucking kids room. It was fucking untouched like it was new and even had stickers on the wall of stars and the moon that looked brand new, it was fucking terrifying and eerie.

We had Hand-me-down krag-jørgensen rifles our grandfather had bought in the early 50's. I had some cheap old 9mm for protection. These hikes would last about a month so we brought a bunch of books and emergency food in case we didn't catch food.

His old bedroom upstairs has a bowl of nasty mold death cereal from before school the day they never went upstairs again, one bed made and one messy, and a pair of pajamas are still laid out on the dresser.
I had pics, but it was to dark to make anything out.
Have you tried using photo editing software to turn up the brightness/contrast?
Went urbexing for the first time in "Hell's Half Acre" basically.. it's in FT worth, abandoned meat packing plant where mobsters used to drop off bodies. I'm walking by myself, torch in hand, phone in the other just fucking around on facebook, then out around a corner pops another young urbexer. After a few moments of shouting from the both of us, we stop and laugh, coming to the realization that we were both just here to explore. We team up and begin walking the plant, finding the normal objects, including a pretty gnarly looking meat cleaver. Finally we see a flood light on, so I walk to the room where the flood light is. This is where shit gets creepy. In this room there is a tub, the tub is lined with a clear tarp that is COVERED in brown stains, like a dark rust color. Numerous instruments were laid out, I'm no expert but I can tell you they were all sharp and pointy. Guns come out (Fuck yeah Texas!) and I run with my new found friend to get the fuck out of dodge, we make it outside and get back to our cars, and go home. I still freak out about that shit, It might have just been an old part of the slaughter house that was used to clean animals and some druggie could have found the light and turned it on and forgotten about it, but creepy any way you look at it.
Guns come out (Fuck yeah Texas!)
My favorite part.
I really want to go urbexing but I fucking despise rats and insects and rodents and all that stuff :S Do you come across that a lot? Fuck hobos I would just sit down and have a can of soup with them or something, but if a rat crossed my way shit would get real.

You need to be more worried about crackheads, I think somewhere earlier it was mentioned to carry a pack of cigs with you, my advice is don't be a fuckass and just don't go alone. Like I've run into crack heads, my deterrent is simple, "Have you met my friend .45?" they normally fuck off after that.

I have this one very disturbing story you might want to hear. It's going to take me a while to finish writing but it is surely worth it. Please, if you decide to share this story, ask for my permission. I went through a lot of time while writing. So, let's get started. I was 14 years old and on a summer vacation. I have always been interested and curious about abandoned places, like houses, and mysterious events that have happened pretty much anywhere. My grandmother even bought me a book about this mine of the story i'm telling. There is this small town called Outokumpu in Finland near the city i live in (Joensuu. I don't know why i have a german flag under my profile, it says i'm from Finland when you click my profile. maybe it's because i had a german ip when i registered) and it used to be a miner town (huge mine) it was the biggest mine in Finland at that time. It was founded when a HUGE copper rock was found in a river, Kuussalmi and following it's trails they found their way to Outokumpu, where the rock had assumably had been detached from it's source. The mystical hill in Kuusjärvi, Finland where a copper ore deposit was found in 1910, giving name to both the Outokumpu Group and the town of Outokumpu in Eastern Finland. http://www.outokumpu.com/en/company/history/Pages/default.aspx (source for the image) The mine was shut down after the copper and metal ran out. That was some background info, now into the actual story. So, it was my 14th summer, a beautiful sunny day. We had planned to go visit the mine museum that day, and i was very excited. I had been there only once before on my third grade, on a school trip. So i knew some small stuff about the mine. We arrived there as usual, and went in to the waiting room. There was a computer there that had some interesting documents for the audience to view. I instantly jumped to the usually creepy part, the accidents that had happened in the mine. They were pretty awful, but on deadly accident really disturbed me. There was an event that 2 mine trains that were used to travel the mines deep in to the mine and then back on the surface. In this accident, a miner had that had been going up to the surface heard another trains voice coming from the opposite direction, even though both of the trains had been on the bottom level. He peaked his head out of the passenger cabin and..you can guess the rest. It gets creepier and creepier. They say they never found the poor miners head from the mine. At this point i was feeling a bit sick and thinking how fucked up that is. Well, our guide arrived and so the tour began. We went to the mine and the guide told us some neat stuff, showed us some cool rocks, told about the machines in mine and one of them got stuck in my head. The miners used to call it "the pig" because it made that kind of sound while working. Well, i thought that wasn't really too creepy. Then we arrived at this part of the mine that had been sealed off due to big collapses in the mine that had happened, the guide said that outokumpu mine was like a swiss cheese. A whole mansion was told had been sunken inside the ground because of the old tunnels collapsing. There was not enough resources left so the mine had to be shut down. Well, back to topic. So at this sealed part of the mine there was some wood planks that weren't too thick, you could see through them with a flashlight that the guide had. There was a statue of some kind of troll, and it was made of copper. It was sitting on it's seat and i thought that was creepy as hell. As i was watching the statue we heard this giant rumble from the upper part of the mine. I nearly shit my pants and but the guide told me not to worry, those sounds are pretty usual. They just echo louder than they actually are. So i managed to take a deep breath and calm down. Then what i hear was something that sounded like a mine trains whistle and a mans scream that suddenly stopped. Then i thought what i saw was a mans head rolling down the mine shaft. I was fucking horrified i tell you that. It was nothing but a small rock but it looked so real and the scream. My mother said she didn't hear anything unusual but i was sure of it. I was shaking a bit and started seeing these horror images in my head of that headless miner arriving at the surface and the faces of his co-workers. I had chills all the time and i said i wanted to get out. We continued to the surface normally however. When we arrived back to the place we started, i saw these massive thunder clouds that had been building up to the sky. I am scared of thunder probably more than anything so i almost started shaking at this point. I asked the guide for more info about the accident and he said he knows nothing about such accident. All he knew was someone buried under collapsed mines but nothing else. I told him to watch the story of the thing and i couldn't find it anymore. I was shocked and didn't know what to think anymore. I thought i was going crazy. He told me that they did find some teeths in one of the tunnels not long time ago, estimated to be 40-50 years old. So at this point, i said to my mother i never want to come here again. I will have nightmares for years about this i said to her. So we left the mine and i did have some nightmares. I still have. And fuck me, i get huge chills while writing this. I could hear the scream and the train whistle in my head. I decided not to think of it anymore. Just a story to share with you now, when i finally have the courage. I am 18 years old this year, and i have been thinking of revisiting the mine. I still get the chills whenever i see the mine tower of the town. - Friedhelm / I.P [editline]29th January 2014[/editline]
I have this one very disturbing story you might want to hear. It's a good story, but I think it might be more suited for the Generally Creepy thread (Can't remember the exact title) in the General Discussion section, seeing as it isn't really Urbex. I actually had a similar thing happen to me whilst at Dover castle, which I can go into more detail about if anyone wants.

Is there a 2nd open thread? Thanks for the help. A few things i forgot to mention was that the scream i heard was actually a rubber part that was in some of the old machines, and it twitched, making that odd sound. I was just in the right place, right time. Or was it? Well at least that's what our guide said. I will, however, be going to these abandoned WWII military bunkers, and also an old military site that is no longer active. Hopefully i find some cool stuff and can submit some images here. A bit afraid to go with only my coward friend though Would be cool to hear about that castle! I am also what you could call a bit of medievalist, very interested in castles and overall, extremely interested in history. Which is apparently rare to an 18-year old, but i have always been that kind of guy.
They said a whole Mansion collapsed into the mine? Holy crap, imagine how trippy it would be to go into that closed off section and theres a freaking mansion underground. And why was that statue in there exactly?
What should I bring if I go Urbexing? I am thinking about knives in case you meet other people. Hell, from all these posts I have read, it makes me not want to go do it. Especially because EVERY horror game I have ever played, I always think that the horror-entity it is gonna be in my closet when I enter my room.

And why was that statue in there exactly?
Yes, the mansion was on a small hill, and then for what the experts said, ONE pillar broke in one tunnel, causing a domino effect and the whole tunnel collapsing, and the tunnel under the collapsing and all the tunnels under the mansion collapsing, causing the whole hill to sink in the ground and ground falling on it. Gladly, no-one was in the mine or the mansion when this happened. Now there is just a small hole on where the mansion used to be. What comes to the statue, it was made as a tribute to the man who found the copper rock and started the mine, it was made from the last pieces of copper found from the mine, and then left there for the tourists to see. I don't have any idea why that part was later sealed off with so much wood planks that you'd need more than a chainsaw to get through, the guide only said that the part is not safe anymore. I don't know what he meant with that :tinfoil: There is one sentence that creeps the shit out of me. My friend who is an urban explorer (pretty experienced one) had been going to this town with extremely small population, then had gone to this abandoned office in the forest, away from buildings. When he had been there for a while, he told me this when he came back. After walking around the office i realized that I had closed a lot more doors than I had opened. That is just so fucking creepy
After walking around the office i realized that I had closed a lot more doors than I had opened. Currently in preston there are some repairs going on under a bridge and the whole underneath of the bridge has scaffolding set up with the exception of a footpath on one side which is basically a tunnel of blue plastic mesh from one side to the other. The thing is at night its pitch black and when you are walking through and look through the mesh part all you can see is scaffolding fading away into darkness. and it takes about 30 seconds to walk through Creepy as fuck.
I heard you could find druggists while Urbexing. You do NOT want to meet them: One, they are probably on a drug, and might be resistant to pain. Two, they might be on something like PCP or something like that, and it gives them a stronger urge to fight to live. So a man of about 6 Feet on PCP would require 6 Policemen to take them down.
Whenever i go searching abandoned places, especially in woods i take my P226 ST with me. I know, it's not necessary or meant to be used but a hunter around these woods disappeared. Last time someone heard of him was 2 rapid fast shots with a bolt action and he was never found. I don't know if it could get more creepier. I'll try to find the news story, its very creepy to read, to know that something like that has happened in a place where you are moving. Probably it was a bear or wolfpack (very rare) but still, just to be sure. And sometimes in old bunkers i find some scared animals that might have some disease and try to attack. I never have it out though, it's in my backpack. it's pretty handy since you can attach a flashlight in it. I am a very good shooter if i may say so, but i have only fired 1 shot out of the range, and that was a wild dog charging towards me when leaving a building. It had something falling from its lips and the eyes weren't normal. Glad we didn't get any ticket from the police, that we called after.

Here's someones write up of some freaky goings on in the CRCMH in maidenhead. Somewhere I wish I'd managed to see before it was flattened. Had to laugh that their escape route ended in the pub.
Not 'creeps you out' material, more 'scares the living fuck out of me'. Yesterday when I was at the cement plant, I was looking about and found a basement area in one of the buildings. I knew from the moment I got there that pigeons and doves would be nesting in the building, but paid it no mind. Well, as I'm going down the stairs into this basement, a dove flies out of a pipe in the wall directly in front of my face. From there I ran up the stairs screaming 'FUUUUUUUUCKKKKK!!!'. My brother thought I was getting murdered by homeless people, but the reality was that a harmless little dove scared me so bad that I was shaking for a good half hour. I'm a pussy.
