What phone do you have?

A Galaxy Nexus.
I think tablets are superior in every way to handheld consoles; java games are becoming more optimized and common which makes almost anything with a web browser and app directory able to run them- nonetheless Windows 8 tablets, whereas compatibility is (almost) never an issue
We have to remember that a lot of kids play handheld consoles and their parents aren't going to buy them a smartphone or tablet so they can play games on it.
The problem is smartphones have huge selections of apps with games that are getting very high in quality.
Whereas the 3DS and Vita both seem to be making the mistake of focusing on the hardware and neither end up having attractive enough games for people to buy them.
As valid as some of your points are, OP, phones and tablets lack one thing that it cannot emulate: Games. And I'm not talking about free or dollar apps, I mean full blown games made by game companies. True, you can get an emulator for said devices (I have three on my iPad), but it wasn't built around gaming. It was built around, well, having a computer on the go (In a sense).
a lot of good points here. but, I honestly think Sony and Nintendo are going to keep pushing to try to make the best handheld console out there. the PSVita is pretty good and it includes what iPhone/Androids have. a touchscreen. RIGHT NOW the iPhones, Androids, Windows Phones, and smartphones in general are dominating the mobile gaming market. BUT that doesn't mean it's the end of the handheld consoles. if Zelda, Mario, or even PORTAL can get ported or even remade to be playable on an iPhone or even an iPad. THEN I really think that's when the handheld generation would end.
I hope not. Some of my favorite games are on handhelds, and that's really all my childhood was.
Also, I believe that games made on dedicated handhelds are MUCH better quality.
