Man, FUCK removing old head gaskets. I've spent a good 4 hours so far scraping the shit off, not even halfway done :v:
Razerblade and sandpaper if it's on the block.
Well that's not great is it? My merc goes up to 43 mpg average on long trips
35 US MPG is pretty good for a merc. My little merc gets up to 24 MPG highway (16 when plodding around Philadelphia), while my big merc gets 20 with a tailwind, the AC relay unplugged, downhill, and at speeds between 55 and 75 MPH (otherwise you're at the gas pump more than you are moving).
Got a new headunit for my cop car [t]http://i.imgur.com/B0eHGsx.jpg[/t] Its made of pure chinesium. It's actually pretty nice. I do plan to run doom on it.
Ok here's the story. 60* in Feb in Wisconsin. Time to paint. Pulled the car out, dusted, cleaned, etc. Then it was masking time And spray time First coats were epoxy primer from Eastwood to seal the metal, etc. It's not high build, but it corrosion resistant, so that's good. It shoots like a dream, mixes 1:1. It was a treat, loved it. Then it was time to chill for an hour before shooting high build urethane primer. That's when the trouble started. I used Eastwood contour high build. It was my first time with that. Recommended gun tip size is 1.8-2.5. My primer gun is 1.8. Nooooowhere near big enough. This stuff is like shooting mud. You mix 5% hardener by weight with essentially doesn't thin it out at all. So I got naughty.. I've 'mixed products' before with decent success, so I decided to do it again. I grabbed some stuff from a different urethane primer I had to reduce it. Mixed probably about 25% into the primer, thinned it, it shot great. But I noticed... usually urethane 2K primer starts to flash matte in about 30 minutes. It was still wetttttt and shiny when I finished spraying. Weird. Then I noticed... I grabbed a can of "thinner HARDENER" Jesus. I didn't read good enough like an idiot and mixed in some random hardener into my already properly catylized primer. At this point it's like 10PM, nothing I can do about it, and I go "welp, I hope that doesn't cause problems...." This morning the garage is about 40* and the car is still a little... sticky. Like I could leave finger print marks in the primer. Hmmm. The trunk, which I had left in the driveway where the sun had been on it, was dry, though. So I pushed the car out and let it bake in the sun for a while. Which seems to have helped. There's some parts that are still 'tacky' but I think I might be OK... maybe. It's back in the garage now with the heat set to 75* to bake it more. If it DOESNT set up that means the whole body and hood have to get scrubbed back to where I was yesterday before primer (or to Epoxy primer at least). It's up in the air.. the real test will be when I start block sanding it. I still can't believe I screwed that up. Reading.. it's important. Also, will probably get a 2.5 tip/needle for my gun before I try to shoot that high build again. On the PLUS side it is like shooting freaking body filler through a gun onto the car. Really, really high build. Do you like Eastwood's products? They seem roughly a quarter of the price of my local PPG store. Just on the primers alone. I would like to stop giving into the local PPG rip me a new asshole prices.
Finally got my headlights fixed, they were making the lights really dim, and now they're so perfect. [t]http://i.imgur.com/4JBB0SM.jpg[/t] [t]https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2647/33018126126_23724c4a2a_k.jpg[/t]
Meet the Turdcel, the 1992 tercel that comes into work every now and then. It smells of mold, leaks oil, has holes in the floor, nothing works right, and I have the pleasure to work on it. He daily drives this thing and supposedly owns another engine for this rolling deathtrap. Last August I went to one of the annual car shows in my area, and I believe 2 or 3 NSXs showed up, along with 4 Supras! At an "Italian" car show (even during the first year they expanded it to anything exotic and exciting). I even saw one of the NSXs the very next day at another shitty parking lot meet, got to talk with the owner and sit in it. Texted him a few times after, but sadly have yet to go for a ride in it. Not sure if he'll respond this coming Spring, but I guess it's still worth a try asking.

So Im looking at getting my first car in a couple of weeks, are there any suggestions for make and model for me to get that wont be a budget killer? Im looking at spending $5k max on a car (no sunfires please). I found a 2005 Toyota Echo with 39000 km for $4500, would that be a good car? Im looking for something cheap, that I wont have to put a lot of money into, and be fuel efficient. Need audio help; Have a ground issue, i think from my ground kit. I installed a new radio, now get interference from the alternator (whirring that goes up/down with engine). When I did my ground kit, i went from battery, to strut tower, then to my manifold. I believe that, in making my battery ground twice, i have made a ground loop that is doing this? The full route is battery-strut tower-manifold-alternator case.
When I do radio installations (2-way radios, not stereos) I never touch the grounding from the battery to the chassis. We always tie off our radio grounds to a point near where the battery bonds to the chassis, and I've never had any issues with ground loops or alternator whine. However, I can't see adding additional ground bonding causing issues. It'd normally help to eliminate ground loops by making sure all parts of the frame are at similar potentials. I would start by moving around the grounding point of your new radio and making sure that whatever point you choose isn't corroded or high-impedance in any way. That's the most common cause of ground loops that I've encountered.

Fordlord; What vehicle, and what radio? A normal vehicle that DOESNT have a common ground speaker system (IE one with 2 wires going to each speaker) that's grounded properly and has proper power, etc won't have a whine on any sourceunless the radio itself is defective. Old Pioneers, like 5+ years old had an internal 'pico fuse' that could blow, but IIRC that only effected the RCA outputs for whine, not the speaker outputs. I've seen a few with defective internal power regulators or defective internal amplifiers that'll do that. Or if it's a shitty BOSS or similarly bad Chinatron unit. Verify that no speaker wires are shorted to ground or anything, although that'd probably toast the internal amp first. DPKILLER; Eastwood's always done me really good. This is the first time I've used their sprayable product, but the Epoxy primer impressed me in usage, sprayability, and price. The highbuild was really really high build and if I wasn't an idiot I'd say does the job swimmingly. You could also try NAPA, too. I've been using their Finish1 line of primer's and clearcoats for most of my products, and Martin Senour basecoats (Finish1 Catalyzed base suxx IMO). Finish1 2k Primer and 2k clear is cheap and easy to work with. The Nason line at CarQuest is great, too. Their catalyzed base is 3 parts, which is annoying, but it sprays nice and their clears and primers have done me well, too. My favorite clear I've ever sprayed is Sherwin Williams DC5020. About $200 a gallon but it lays really nice and seems to be pretty strong once it's fully cured. TBH I've only used PPG once... someone brought me their base/clear to shoot on a bumper/trunk. I used the Finish1 primer and did everything like I always do, and it looked great... for a few months. Then the PPG base and clear peeled off the bumper in sheets after he hit a snowbank and started a crack. I've never seen such a ridiculous delamination before. I've heard 'don't mix paint lines' but TBH I'd NEVER had a problem before that. The primer he gave me was old and useless, so I wonder if the other PPG stuff wasn't expired, too, which contributed?? Either way, have never felt the need to try to use THAT stuff again. I've also used House of Kolor candies a couple times, which were great if not expensive as hell. And also my FAVORITE product from them, the SG150 'Flake Karrier' which is an intercoat clear (AKA non colored basecoat) that's meant to hold pearls and flakes, and it's GREAT for adding those midcoats of custom pearls and stuff.

Keep the faith dude, there will always be good example of 'affordable' MKIVs and NSXs, hopefully. They're reliable enough that you'll get the 150k mi+ cars selling for a reasonable price if you're willing to give them a little love to keep them on the road. Rebuilt titles are great, too. Here's a killer deal on an NSX if it's everything it claims to be; http://www.ebay.com/itm/1995-Acura-NSX-2dr-Sport-Open-Top-Manual-/222416706696?forcerrptr=true&hash=item33c9119c88:g:hDgAAOSwTuJYq-3u&item=222416706696 Under $40k for a '95 in nice shape (assuming it really is) is nice if it's had timing belt service done. Rebuilt title scares lot of people off, but I'm of the opinion if it happened 10 years ago and it's been driving around fine since then... take the discount. Will it be a collector's dream car? No. Is it great to use as a car to drive an enjoy, assuming it was repaired properly? Absolutely. If I was shopping for an NSX right now I'd be on my way to Illinois to look at it tomorrow :v: The market sure is hot for these right now, though. FD RX7s seem to have double in price, Supras have gone up like $10k, NSXs have been creeping up.. sheesh. I'm curious what's going to happen as RHD JDM versions become available. I'm personally hoping the R32 Skyline drops in price a little once the R33 becomes legal.. hehe.
Unrelated to my other discussion, I have a serious, honest to god question for everyone here who's into trucks. I'm not shitting on trucks or anything, I understand that it's different strokes for different blokes (even if I think the fad of rolling coal is fucking stupid and obnoxious). But what are your feelings on the fact that lifting a truck above its (usually already high) factory height make it incredibly unsafe to other drivers? It's honestly a little scary seeing so many around, because as someone who dailies a small, low car (factory height), if I was hit by a lifted truck, it wouldn't even be a matter of safety measures, the truck would just either crush my car underneath, I'd be decapitated, or both. For the record, I don't agree with how cotton-balled cars have become, but I feel differently about it when the cars/trucks are being made more unsafe even in a low speed collision where one driver could be at zero fault [editline]23rd February 2017[/editline] Sorry if this seems It or gets taken the wrong way, just saw a pretty gnarly deathpic on /o/ involving a sedan and a lifted truck and was curious As for you clutch, I'm at the grocery right now and I'll read your post when I get home

Lifted trucks would make me uneasy even when I was driving my own truck at the time. I don't see much reason at all to lift a full-size truck. They're not as good as small trucks off-road, and they're that much worse on-road now. Plus they're blatantly unsafe to all the vehicles around them. Brodozers are the worst modding trend because they're the ones that endanger other people the most.
I would like to point out its not lifted trucks you have to worry about, 18 wheelers out number lifted trucks by some ridiculous number and ontop of that their are plenty of gvwr 10k+ vehicles that will really make your day just as bad. I have had a friend here that died because she got hit in the driver front by a 1 ton. Normal ride height of the truck and all but she was DOA. Lifted trucks with bumpers like my stinger and Valons will definitely kill you if he hit you in the door if you had airbags or not. I have seen some rear end photos of regular trucks plowing into regular cars at a stop from the rear. Man these trucks are heavy and no matter what something has to give. Doesn't matter what it is its ride height or what kind of bumper it has. It has mass and that's what will hurt. Dont point the finger all on the lifted truck community. You will die regardless or turn into a spicy meatball. [t]http://kltv.images.worldnow.com/images/10577769_G.jpg[/t] Happened in a 35mph zone.
Razerblade and sandpaper if it's on the block.
Yeah, I've been going away at it with a razor blade, gasket remover, and brake cleaner. I dunno if I want to use sandpaper, I've heard bad things about head gasket surfaces and abrasives lol.
For the record, I don't agree with how cotton-balled cars have become, but I feel differently about it when the cars/trucks are being made more unsafe even in a low speed collision where one driver could be at zero fault [editline]23rd February 2017[/editline] Sorry if this seems It or gets taken the wrong way, just saw a pretty gnarly deathpic on /o/ involving a sedan and a lifted truck and was curious As for you clutch, I'm at the grocery right now and I'll read your post when I get home
my truck is pretty low as trucks go at only about an inch above stock (though that inch has probably sagged out over the past 10 or so years since I did it) I've definitely gotten it stuck because of that. it's built for a purpose, no different than an 18 wheeler which could fuck you right up way worse than any lifted pickup.
both semis and other commercial heavy vehicles aren't lifted to ridiculous heights off the ground to go straight over the safety features of a modern car. sure, getting hit by one would ruin someone's day, but last time i checked semis and commercial vehicles tend to stick to wide open areas or highways where you have escape routes, and don't often venture into city centers, university campuses, or crowded residential neighborhoods where people are most at risk of a low-medium speed collision. also, those vehicles require additional certifications (CDL) to be able to operate legally. i'm also of the opinion that semis/commercial trucks and other similar vehicles should be banned certain public roads anyway, so... as for your second argument, i'm just going to assume that's sarcasm
a commercial heavy vehicle is gonna kill you just as dead as a lifted pickup at any speed. and it's straight up dumb to say commercial vehicles should be banned on roads. like honestly the dumbest thing I've ever seen posted in aa. how are small businesses supposed to get anything without heavy commercial vehicles? how is fedex supposed to deliver you your junk? also I have a CDL and I can guarantee you an idiot could get one
How about one of these?
A commercial vehicle can go generally anywhere it wants if its out for delivery. Now in the rare ish situation you have a nose on nose situation well.. Doesn't matter what it is Have you seen overlap crash test? They don't do so well. [t]http://kltv.images.worldnow.com/images/10577769_G.jpg[/t] Happened in a 35mph zone.
i'm not arguing that heavy vehicles aren't dangerous, i'm well aware that they are, and being tailgated by a semi definitely gives me way more worries than some 19 year old guy's truck does. all i'm asking is if it crosses your mind, or if you have an opinion on the fact that by lifting a truck (or adding bull bars), even by just a couple inches, you're making your vehicle more dangerous to other drivers than it already was. these are a special class of mods, adding a big tarbo to your car doesn't make it more dangerous in a collision of equal speed or circumstance than if your car didn't have a tarbo, same goes for stupid rims or loud exhaust or whatever. but adding solid 3" diameter steel to the front of your truck or a ridiculous lift definitely does. i'm not saying truck drivers are inherently more dangerous on the road, or trying to shit on trucks, i think they're cool as shit and i'm looking at trying to get a diesel this year so i can start hauling my kart (and hopefully my future track car) around. sorry if this seems confrontational or anything, i'm not trying to shame people who do these mods, i was just wondering about them because they're so different to anything else that can be done to a car
also other than DIESEL BRO lifted truck drivers tend to go pretty slow. our ackerman is all fucked up and if we go too fast around a corner we'll 3 wheel and getting a proper alignment is pretty much impossible. especially people in older lifted trucks like mine where on top of that it needs ball joints and the brakes suck
