Loads of regular cars use nuts instead of bolts....
Called acorn nuts. Or similarly, external thread nuts
My mechanical knowledge is still pretty limited but I wanted to get a good inspection by a reputable mechanic and he just sent me this:
... the car looks brand-new from the air filter to the breaks. Very good condition. Very good car.
That's always a good message from a mechanic
Loads of regular cars use nuts instead of bolts....
Heh, didn't even know that. Haven't ever seen a car with it.
Then again, I mostly deal with shity boxes on a daily base :v:
i've never seen wheels mounted using bolts.. what do they do, thread into the hub??
i've never seen wheels mounted using bolts.. what do they do, thread into the hub??
Yes. And you know fucking what, It's a horrible fucking idea. Fucking had to change my tyre to the spare a few months back 'cause of a screw. The stupid plastic piece in the kit to keep it aligned broke when I tried to screw it into my hub. It took me an hour total to change my fucking tyre because of that. I had to constantly re-align the hub and then hope to god I didn't fucking knock it slightly when lifting the spare up onto it. I mean, that was maybe 15 minutes of my time total, since I spent the first hour trying to get the fucking wheel off the hub. All the bolts were out but the fucker was stuck on there good because of the oxidation.
Called acorn nuts. Or similarly, external thread nuts
They're called lug nuts
the other kind are called fucking stupid
They're called lug nuts

You do know there are different types of lug nuts... right
Lug bolts suck. Who the hell wants to hold up a wheel while trying to thread in a bolt. Studs and nuts are the only way to go.
Heh, didn't even know that. Haven't ever seen a car with it.

I think most if not all european cars use bolts, most 'MURICAN cars use studs and nuts and Asians use a mix. I changed wheels on a Nissan with studs and found it to be a bit of a pain. Usually don't have a problem with using bolts on any of my other cars.
i've never seen wheels mounted using bolts.. what do they do, thread into the hub??
that's the gist of it. my beetle has then and they're a nightmare
I think most if not all european cars use bolts, most 'MURICAN cars use studs and nuts and Asians use a mix. I changed wheels on a Nissan with studs and found it to be a bit of a pain. Usually don't have a problem with using bolts on any of my other cars.
It's objectively easier to just throw a wheel on the studs and go from there.
Having to do the death star trench run to get a lug bolt in the hole which needs to be lined up right is why I always sigh a little when a VW pops up at work.
The new Cherokees have them, and this guy was getting fat tires put on them. Managing a heavy ass set of rims and tire while trying to get a bolt in there and aligned was infuriating.
Can't imagine what it would be like to have a car that uses lug bolts. That just sounds awful. I can barely manage just holding the wheel up to the studs, and now you're asking me to do it one-handed? No bueno.
Wasn't even aware that lug bolts were a thing, and boy am I thankful for that.

UNTIL I GO OUTSIDE AND LOOK AT MY FIAT. GODDA
that's the gist of it. my beetle has then and they're a nightmare
Now imaging that pain, but with big ass offroad wheels. Which is what Im about to go through in another 5 minutes here.
If I never post again, send a rescue party with donuts and a stud conversion kit
I converted my 900 from lug bolts to nuts and it was the best decision I've ever made. Makes getting in the wheelwell infinitely easier, or at least the reassembly afterwards.
Well
I'm off to Germany now, to the Porsche factory :')
Test driving brand new Porsches and shit

Don't they provide that service to any Porsche customer, regardless of location?

Fuck, I worked in an auto parts store for 3 years and didn't really catch on to this.
I'm like some of the other guys in this thread, literally can't remember dealing with a car that had anything other than lugnuts to keep the wheels on.
The thing I don't get is why cars as a whole didn't adopt the center hub type of lugnut seen on most national/global level racecars. Hell, Porsche, Ferrari, etc all have started throwing them on a good amount of their models.
Maybe it has to do with small details like having a bigger socket, and therefore bigger wrench in the tire change emergency kit. But only having to worry about and torque 4 lugs, instead of like 16 or more in some cases, sounds better to me. Maybe it does cost more? Haven't confirmed that.

safety reasons, if you curb a center lock wheel wrong the nut will back off. used to be a big problem with the old school winged knock offs. you used to hear about people in old american and british cars with center lock wheels getting killed because of that all the time

Can you ask them to restore my 944?
If I remember right, benz does proper restoration of classics for a large sum of money, I'd imagine porsche does something similar.

Don't most brands with historic/notable classic models have classic parts programs? I know Benz does, they sell parts for pretty close to every year and every model I've heard. Nissan has the Heritage program, Chevy, Ford, they sell parts for the popular muscle cars.

Yeah, those thing are out there.
What I'm talking about is actually having your car picked up by Benz and driven to a facility where their techs do all of that for you, not just buying parts. Heard about it in a reddit thread a while ago, apparently there's one place in Germany and on in California.
Seems like a neat thing to offer for those who want it and have the money.
I'm shit out of luck with my bmw, nearly all usefull parts ar discontinued.
I can't even find good imitation products
So I just about got arrested last night.
I was up at my friends farm, and another friend has this 72 olds toranado there that hes been fixing up. He finally got it running and driving, so I was excited to go for a test drive. We pulled it out of the shed and headed off, and barely got around the first turn before the motorcycle gas tank strapped to the fender ran out of gas. I wasnt about to wait for someone to go get gas for it, and we were only about 200 yards away from the farmhouse. I started walking through the cornfield, and remembered I left the vents on the bus batteries open (I was refilling them), so I started jogging over. Side note, Im out of shape. Anyways, a few of my friends hopped in a car to go fill up a gas can, and I go about my business. A few people stopped and looked as they passed at the hoodless beige beast sitting on the side of the road, but I thought nothing of it. Heres where shit gets silly. They barely got the thing filled up and driven back when a sherrif comes over the hill, lights on. My friend's dad, who lives a half mile over, went out to meet him, and apparently deputy dipshit gets out of his car, gun drawn, and starts freaking out. As it turns out, my friends place is right next to one of the shutoff valve sites for that new pipeline that everyone hates. Apparently the night previously, a couple of dumb broads broke in and tried to cut a hole in the pipe with a blowtorch, so they were all edgy about people being near the valve. When the car quit, it was probably 400-500 yards away from the valve site. My friends dad came over later to tell us to stop causing trouble, and told us we definitely would have gotten arrested instantly if the car was still there and we were near it. He said they were freaking out about the car being there and people running toward the pipeline. These are the same overreacting asshats that complained about "bullets flying over their heads" the last time we went out there to shoot clay pidgeons, in the complete opposite direction. Since the FBI is investigating any pipeline disturbances, there is a good chance that pictures of me getting winded jogging through a cornfield exist on an FBI server somewhere.

On the upside, the buggy drives again, badly. Most of the wiring is done.
