HOW DOES THIS EXIST
IN THIS STATE OF REPAIR
This.... this isn't supposed to happen. Something, somewhere, is going horribly, incredibly wrong for someone, because the cosmic balance has been shifted hard by an immaculate neon still pludding arouns.
The seats slay me. I cannot believe such cheesy seats made it onto a production car. The 90s were a magical time.
I appreciate you taking the time. I'm not dead set on a sedan, but I am looking for something fuel efficient. I should probably mention that I have family and friends about 120 miles away that I would like to be able to see a few times a year. Gas cost, maintenance, and reliability are my biggest factors right now. Don't really give a shit about aesthetics or features. I do like smaller cars because I'm kind of a shit driver and have terrible spacial awareness, so sometimes I have trouble parking my dad's truck.
The 03 Forester gets 21-29 mpg supposedly which is worse than the Civic but it's still plenty manageable and the Forester is a considerably more capable vehicle in general. I can look more when I get to my lunch break.
As an aside (not related to Beaver's hunt), my buddy found a 65 Mercedes 190 fintail in pretty good shape for $3400 but it's in Ohio. We're planning a Roadkill trip for later this summer if he still has it then. If it all works out I'm going to stick my Roadkill sticker in the window before we take off. We're planning on camping the whole way back instead of paying for hotel rooms and we'll be stopping at every neat junk store along the way to cram the trunk with thrift goodness... assuming the car makes it out of Akron.
Holy shit, you're in a gold mine for old Dodge trucks.
Anyway, at a glance (since I'm at work) there is an 03 Subaru which would serve you way better than the Civic ever could. https://westmd.craigslist.org/cto/6102396560.html I don't know if you're specifically looking for a sedan but if not this would be worth a look.
The inspection is out but he claims it will pass. I'd pressure him to take it and get it inspected before I gave him any money. I don't know a lot about Subarus but I think they are generally respectable cars, someone here can probably advise you better on that than I can.
That is a really good deal for that year with that low of miles. I would honestly buy it myself if I had the cash on hand.
I don't see any rear quarter rot, so it couldn't have been in MD for long. Huge bonus.
The 100k mile service was done, that is an expensive service to do.
Though, I don't see struts mentioned. They would be blown by now.
This Forester gets about 23city/27highway, possibly more. Maintenance is cheap, reliability is high.
I daily drive Subaru's. They are the only cars I own. Any questions and I can likely help.

I was just gonna mention this as a side note haha! I do it all the time, have to reload the page and select a different rating
Yeah, since like 90% of my facepunch browsing is on my phone I tend to fatfinger ratings all the time. If you ever see a weird rating from me on a post that doesn't really need a rating, that's probably why.
In car news I fixed my interior lights. It was a fuse. One fuse.

This thing is so weird to drive.... I'm used to everything being worn out, having rattles everywhere, and adjusting for all the play in the steering.
But this truck, its brand new. I have no fuckin' clue how you "lightly use" a turn signal, but it clicks harder than any other turn signal I've used :v:
The brakes are stiff, dont have to push them to the floor, it drives like my dads brand new 2013 Ram but rides better
Bombed around yesterday, does 80km/h at 1000rpm (4th) and 110km/H (5th) at 1100rpm, stupid low gears than what I'm used to. Probably contributes to why the engine is like new and pretty well burns no fuel

It could be as late as August by the time he has the money ready for the car+trip expenses so we are counting on the car's relative undesirability to keep it waiting for us. You should go buy it and hang on to it for us. :v:

Comfort indicators have spoiled me :frown: that and my daily commute is with very few turns.
When asking sellers to inspect their cars, is that expected to be covered by the potential buyer or what? I've read a lot of advice saying you should ask the seller to take the car to a mechanic to be checked if you're skeptical but I've never heard of anyone actually doing that and don't know how that would even go down.
Is buying privately to get a good deal really better than going down to a dealership where the cars are already inspected and have an available Carfax report?

Audi has a comfort indicator stalk? I swear the one in my mom's T4 feels like I'm about to snap it off every time I use it.
Audi has a comfort indicator stalk? I swear the one in my mom's T4 feels like I'm about to snap it off every time I use it.
I'd just have to blip it right before it "clicks"
But yeah, the old VW stalks requires quite a bit of force, I actually miss that.
Does it have the "comfort indicator" relay or just the regular blinker relay?
Comfort indicators have spoiled me :frown: that and my daily commute is with very few turns.
I had no idea what a comfort indicator was until I looked it up. Turns out I've been using them on my Fusion all along. Ford doesn't call them anything, it's just a feature mentioned as a footnote. Go figure.
It's one of those features your like "why would I ever need it" and then you get a vehicle with it and it's like "why wouldn't I want this".

If you mean state inspection, i would have the seller cover it for sure.
As far as pre purchase inspection, always covered by the buyer.
Your safest bet is having a trusted mechanic or friend that knows cars check it out with you.
Most sellers won't transport the vehicle to garages that they aren't familiar with.
Personally;
You'll always get better deals privately.
I have gone to a decent amount of dealerships, where the cars are certified preowned and all that.
In a lot of the cars I saw, there were glaring issues that should have never passed a certification.
In fact, I checked out an '05 Forester at Carmax that passed their inspection. The spare tire well was full of water and the oil was overfilled by 1 quart.
Carfax is also only good as a reference, it is not perfectly accurate.
IE. The car I have now has a perfectly spotless carfax, they rate it very high.
But in reality; both fenders, hood, front bumper, fender liners, both passanger doors, and other parts were replaced. It was in a very serious crash at some point, clearly enough to total it.
I inspected it thoroughly. While i can tell that things were replaced, they did a decent repair job.

it'll have to be a REALLY cheap shitbox or be over 5 years old to NOT have it as standard.
5k for a 99 Civic regardless of miles is overpaying imo
Trying to find a fun, small, fwd car under 5k from the era of fun, small, fwd economy cars is near impossible. I spent the last two months looking at Civics, Integra, Neons and a bunch of random garbage inbetween for a buddy. Among the best was a $1,400 96' sedan with 340k miles and a couple cars which I came to the conclusion were better as a temporary investment with the intent to part them out and not even transferring the title while driving out the last month or two of tags which would only cost like $130 for a title transfer and two years of tags.
Used cars from the 90's are increasing in value on the used market, I live in an area where rust doesn't exist and a rust hole in a fender means the car is totaled. You used to be able to find good used Integras for 2-3k all day long, now you're lucky to find one that doesn't have frame damage, mold and doesn't smell like someone puked and shit all over the car.
It's now a sellers market and the repercussions of a post cash for clunkers market are setting in along with the massive increase in new vehicle cost over the past 15 years. If you want something like a small, light, cheap FWD economy car you're going to pay through the nose because people aren't letting go of them. My car after putting 70k miles on it and front/rear damage is currently worth roughly what it was bought for 7 years ago.
The used car market is insanely broken.
5k for a 99-00 EK Civic, provided it's a hatch, Si or EX and manual sounds just about right for 78k miles in perfect condition. It's not what you want to pay, it's not what your bank will loan you and it's not insurance will pay you but that's just on the high end of what it's worth. If it's an HX, I'd say that people on Ecomodder might pay well over that as well.
Want to know a really good joke? Go on Autotrader and look up the prices of a 99-00 Civic. Here's some examples. All of these are going for roughly 2x what they're even realistically worth as well.

I can say that it's not like that at all here.
The Integra's, Civic's, and other FWD econo cars are sitting on lots where no one wants them.
There is a niche ricer market for some of them, but most are going for midsize cars and midsize SUV's.
Check out the Raleigh craigslist to see some of what i mean.

So mom was complaining about the AC barely functioning and she also heard a ton of hissing come from the evaporation coil. Would this be a good indication to get the system recharged at a local garage? It isn't exactly promising that it was working just fine last Sunday, and it now suddenly makes this noise along with barely working. I've quickly checked the compressor itself but nothing was off at least.

If you just partially tap your turn signal in the direction you want, it will return to center, it will flash 3 times and then stop. Useful if your just changing lanes.
Watched someone today try to back out of a parking stall without turning their wheels before their front end cleared. It went as expected: comical.

I still do this tbh. My car is long and my front overhang is longer and I get scared of hitting people.
