I think I remember in the last language thread I made a couple did talk about korean, so I'm pretty sure there may be some. edit: http://facepunch.com/member.php?u=187525 Found him, he seemed pretty passionate in the thread so I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you threw a pm his way (if he doesn't know about this thread)
Decided to go German after getting many suggestions for it. I'm liking it so far, using Duolingo.
Right now I'm self-teaching myself Hiragana. 20 characters down. Many more to go. Constantly doing flashcard drills and writing them down in random order to try to keep the characters fresh.
I'm struggling a bit with the different uses of "the" in German. Probably because I'm so use to there just being one word for it in English.
So I got through all 46 Hiragana and starting up Handakoun and Dakoun structures. Kanji is going to be interesting since I learned Chinese and still recognize a number of characters. I'm going to have to re-learn all of them if they're going to be pronounced completely differently. [editline]27th July 2015[/editline] Also, are there any good Youtube Channels and books, particularly childrens' books that I could try reading in Japanese?
I'm struggling a bit with the different uses of "the" in German. Probably because I'm so use to there just being one word for it in English.
i wish i could tell you it gets easier it doesn't
i wish i could tell you it gets easier it doesn't
Eh, imo after awhile it becomes a bit like muscle memory, eventually I just began using endings that were usually correct without having to pause too hard after getting used to it, and I guess learning hints that can give away a word's gender if you don't know it helps too (though, not perfectly. My grammar book for example states that continents, countries, towns and provinces are neuter, and then goes on to list like 15 countries that violate that rule. But the point is in those situations if you don't know you can throw out das and be right more often than not)
Eh, imo after awhile it becomes a bit like muscle memory
That's the goal. You still need to go through the pain to get there.
-got it-
Eek just shelled out £35 for Genki I (Also bought the workbook seperately for £25), £23 for Heisig's 'Remembering the Kanji' Getting ready for uni! Why is this shit so expensive?!
I spent like $150 on Pleco. [editline]20th August 2015[/editline] No regret. [editline]20th August 2015[/editline] I've been playing a little bit of influent. It's a bit rusty but it's a fun way to learn a little vocab. Most of the stuff I already knew but it has helped me learn the names of everyday objects that I don't think to learn like 牙刷和耳机. If that website doesn't help too much (it may not, I didn't really look at it), maybe look into a textbook. You can also try this out too.
大家好,我正在学习汉语。我大约一年学习了。非常难而且非常有趣的。
大家好,我正在学习汉语。我大约一年学习了。非常难而且非常有趣的。
It's better to say '学汉语' instead of '学习汉语'. The phrase '大约' is used for stuff like '他大约五点钟来' meaning 'He will come at around 5 o'clock'. The word you might be looking for is '大概' so you would say '我大概学了一年了' When using '而且' generally both parts on each side have the same connotations. In this case you were saying '难' and '有趣' which are contrasting. So a better way to say this might be '学汉语非常难但是非常有趣的'. I hope you don't mind me, I'm just trying to be helpful :wavey:

By the way if you'll ever talk with a Serbian, you won't have any issues, maybe just smaller ones.
Yeah I know, pretty much everyone understands each other in Yugoslavia
If you speak french, assimil will have a Croatian unit I believe. They might also have one in English or Swedish, you'd have to google for that. If you've got good motivation maybe take a look at the FSI (This one especially, it'll make a Croatian speaker out of you, but it's not super friendly like duolingo), or the teach yourself series. I've become somewhat interested in Latin. I'm going to be able to chop off two hours off my school schedule so when I've got that down I'll probably have a read through Lingua Latina per se Illustrata, Pars 1: Familia Romana. It's a latin book with barely any English that gets a lot of praise. One thing that really sounds great about it is that it apparently teaches you a lot about roman history and culture during the book, which appeals to me because I'm pretty rusty on that historical period.

Thanks for the clarification for 而且. So many different conjunctions in Chinese. Would 并 work there too? I feel like it's more contrast-y as well.

[DEL]as for '并' you would say '学汉语非常难,但并是有意思' I think I'm not 100% I'd rather use 但是。 I'll have to check with someone about using 并 like that lol I don't really use it that often[/DEL] Ok here's the deal with 并. Both terms on either side of it have to describe the same quality I think. So: 学汉语很难,但并不是很难 Means 'learning Chinese is really difficult, but it's not THAT difficult. ' You would emphasize '很' to get this point across. Basically I don't believe 并 would suit your context, I'd just use 但是。
I got back into studying Korean again. I used to take classes at college but I didnt like the 200 level teacher (and being surrounded by koreaboos in my class was making me nervous). I've found the chat app MeowChat is really useful for practicing conversations. Meow chat is a random chat app that lets you talk to people wherever in the world. To find koreans, I simply used the map to hover over south korea and chose random people to talk to.

(After learning the alphabet). I still have some difficulty with the ㅋ/ㄱ/ㄲ and related stuff though. I'm thinking about just waiting until I graduate so I can take a uni class but Idk how language classes work since I didn't even have to take one in highschool because I tested out of Chinese. I just don't have a lot of time right now though
So I recently started Japanese (with electives in Russian and Korean) at university. If anybody wants to read my relevant blog, I'd love it http://seiferthelizardking.blogspot.co.uk/

私は日本語から英語のDuolingoの語学のコーズが勉強中だが、英語のネイティブスピーカーです。説明がちょっと悪いから、難しいのに、超楽しいよ。 I've been using the Japanese to English course on Duolingo for about a week and from what I can tell my ability has increased massively from when I started. It's a bit hard on bits where there are multiple things in Japanese that translate to the same thing English because I am a native speaker of English and it only explains the difference between the English versions. I still get fucked by particles though. Been learning Japanese for about 4 months on my own now and most common kanji should be done in around 3 months I imagine. Been using Anki for it only requiring myself to learn the english meanings of them and picking up a few readings as a bonus. Using twitter as a constant stream of input seems to work well and has the benefit of the occasional cat picture. Considering doing the JET program after I finish my degree but I may not when the time comes. I used to absolutely despise children but somehow learning Japanese has increased my tolerance for them. I watched a self introduction video of a 3 year old Japanese kid and if it was in english there is no way I'd have managed but the overwhelming power of "holy shit I know these words" was too great. Previously I spent about 4 months on learning German (second half was only really covering what I learnt) but as there was nothing keeping me interested in the language apart from "hurr I can talk to my brother in German because he did it in high school" (he forgot most of it, something I knew most of the time I was learning) the verb conjugation made me drop it. However with Japanese I don't imagine any such issues as I now have lots of music that I enjoy and reading kanji is just so satisfying. If I learnt anything from my time learning German, it's that this takes a fucking long time, and failure is assured without something keeping you interested (culture, games, job etc). Also did Mandarin for one class a week in highschool for half a year but never continued with it when we chose our electives for the next two years. At this point I am regretting that decision a bit as it certainly would have helped out with kanji but oh well. しょうがない。 Except for 我 being we in Japanese and I in Chinese. For anyone starting to learn Japanese: I learnt my kana through Tae Kim's guide before I found about Namasensei's glorious lessons. Using Kanji Damage for kanji because I didn't like Heisig's keywords and ordering and didn't feel like either searching for or making my own mnemonics. I'll upload my anki deck once I'm done in case anyone else wants to do them without spending the hundred hours I will have spent making the cards. Once you get the stage where you can understand basic conversational stuff I recommend おおかみこどもの雨と雪 (Wolf Children), apart from being a really great movie it's also really easy to understand. Considering laddering Korean in Japanese after I'm fluent as the grammar is similar but that's a long way off. Anything useful I can do with 9 double sided sheets of chicken scrawl? [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15606445/chicken scrawl.jpg[/t] Edit: oh yeah and if you are learning and you are using windows swap the language to what you are learning, windows is easy to use regardless and you'll learn so much so fast.
我不久去中国学汉语,所以十一月以前我想学会很多生词,我也想多练习口语。有人去过西安吗?西安怎么样? 我的网友告诉了我,西安菜非常美味的。我应该多锻炼,澳大利亚菜真不好,也很贵,但是我已经吃太多了。 [editline]23rd September 2015[/editline] 亲爱的日记 :s:
