• Jimmy Kimmel: YouTube’s New Video Game Watching Service

I don't watch these that often but here's how I rate those hosts I'm familiar with: Jimmy Fallon - has funny bits and skits but destroys them by his overacting and fake laughing Jimmy Kimmel - some funny bits but a lot of the time his skits feature making fun of others which gets boring after a while Conan O'Brien - his bits not always land but his personality always makes you feel comfortable. He's not afraid to make fun of himself.
say what you will about him but so far he's one of the few famous people who understands and appreciates the humor of eric andre and that makes him pretty cool if you ask me
John Oliver does things very much like Stewart did, but really goes a step further. I think if you like Oliver you'd like Stewart but it's not a huge deal.

I think if you like Oliver you'd like Stewart but it's not a huge deal.
I think you explained why it would only work in reverse in your first sentence. Stewart, in comparison, is far drier and doesn't cover as many bases as Oliver does. Therefore, people who like Stewart would probably like Oliver, but people who have grown accustomed to Oliver might not enjoy backtracking to Stewart.
holy shit that comment section full of legitimately angry nerds is the best thing ever
This is also probably why stuff won't be taken seriously. It's always the loud, obnoxious, and unqualified that end up representing a group and it sucks.
people are actually getting buttflustered over this?
people are actually getting buttflustered over this?
They can't take a joke lol
I think it's the reason most people would fine the initial episodes of the Simpsons and even Family Guy to be extremely bland.
Family Guy actually pretty much started at it's peak. It didn't start off slow like The Simpson's did, mainly because The Simpsons already existed and pioneered that snappy style of humor. Family Guy basically started out great and then started to wind down after a few seasons as they started to run out of jokes.

I think it's more like this:
The thing is, I'm not even rating him by his politics (which would be wrong). Last night I sat through a couple of his episodes and compared them to other speakers and honestly, I'm just not impressed. I watched his episode about the human trafficking bill and the only laugh it gave me was a pun he made about Harry Reid's name. Then I watched some highlights from one of his less politically driven episodes and I didn't really find anything funny about that either. The thing is, Colbert Report makes me laugh even though I'm conservative, and Jon Stewart was supposedly a co-creator of it. Why can't Jon Stewart be funny, but a spinoff of his show can? To be fair I'm sure there's a few of his episodes that are at least decent, but I frankly find people like John Oliver (who I think is currently the best comedy talk show host right now) to be funnier. Even Kimmel's video gave me chuckles. My theory is that the only reason why Jon Stewart is considered such a phenomenal talk show host is just because his viewer base like him for his politics. And frankly, if you leverage the quality of a show by whether or not the host agrees with you all the time, you're honestly not being a good judge. You can't say I'm not being fair here. I don't watch comedy talk shows because I want to have my right-wing conservative dick stroked, I watch them so I can laugh. And Stewart gives me barely any. Frankly you can tell there's something wrong with an attitude like this: against anybody who thinks Stewart isn't that great.
Nah didn't mean to offend, I was just saying that if you're conservative you probably won't a enjoy a primarily left leaning political-news-comedy show
Nah didn't mean to offend, I was just saying that if you're conservative you probably won't a enjoy a primarily left leaning political-news-comedy show
Ah. Well like I said, I watch these things for laughs, not to have my conservative right wing dick stroked. :v: I'm perfectly OK with hosts like Stephen Colbert making some (deserved) sarcastic performances about conservative talk show hosts, but I just don't find Stewart funny is all.
Guillermo should just take over Kimmel's show. He's the only saving point.
I'm not going to be one of those guys that tries to convince everyone that "GAMES ARE FOR PEOPLE WHO CHOOSE TO HAVE MANY LIVES", but there's a lot of people that view games and gamers as inherently immature, lazy, fat, and nerdy, yet in the same breath put movies up on the top-shelf as a critically acclaimed form of art. It's kind of annoying to see video games get shot down for absolutely everything. It can't be art, it can't be a sport, it can't be high-brow, and it can't be safe. The only reason why it will ever be reduced to this low-life hobby is because people keep saying it is. Jimmy Kimmel is just a component in that, so I don't really care, but it's the overall shittiness from everyone that personally annoys me. It's lame.
Is it on random commentators like Jimmy Kimmel, or is it on a community and an industry that is so wound up and insecure that they'll lose their shit over the tiniest offenses to their culture? Not only from the outside, but from the inside at well. How can art, and the discussion of said art, really evolve if we react like this to anything that goes against the status quo?
Gotta admit that the last part made me at least smile. Reminded me of this old skit:
Yep. I've been to a live taping and he wasn't engaging with the audience. His only interaction was only to do some of the skits for Youtube. Conan was way better in terms of improv comedy and his interaction with the audience. When the band played a cover song during the commercial break, Conan would rock out to it or lip sync. The only thing that made Kimmel better was that I get to go to the restroom before taking my seat. That, and the handful of overly famous celebrities.
I saw Conan just last week, the episode with JB Smoove and Tig Notaro. I sat like right next to Andy's podium and he waved all friendly to me and the other guys on my end. Also before the show starts the band comes out to hype everyone up. La Bamba actually sings and is super cool and expressive, unlike all the silly bits they've done with him. When the taping ends Conan sings his super secret "end of the show song" and since our musical guest had to record earlier in the week due to scheduling, they made up for it by cracking a ton more jokes off-camera and showing us a bit that was gonna air on the next night's show.
I thought it was kinda funny, though what's even funnier was the reaction it caused, god damn the gaming community is sensitive.
In fact it caused so much of an uproar he decided to comment on it:
jesus christ people get angry over this i love watching people play video games but even i realize how insanely ridiculous it is and why it would be difficult to understand if you aren't already in that culture
jesus christ people get angry over this i love watching people play video games but even i realize how insanely ridiculous it is and why it would be difficult to understand if you aren't already in that culture
How is it any dumber than people who watch other people play sports?
How is it any dumber than people who watch other people play sports?
the videos i watch aren't competitive. at all. it's usually one dude playing a singleplayer game, by himself, and commenting over it. e-sports are a fair comparison to sports, absolutely. but watching northernlion run binding of isaac for the 710th time, singleplayer, with nobody else involved, solo commentary? that's not sport - it's like watching someone play solitaire. it's just an absurd industry. i love it, but it's weird that it even exists. e-sports are comparable to sports because there's competition and shit, but when I go watch Ray on Twitch I'm watching him play single-player games to get achievements half the time. It's about the person's personality, absolutely, but it's not a direct relation to sports (except for e-sports).

Most of the ones I watch are essentially just podcasts with gameplay, it's no different from watching, say, a talk show

Likewise, watching someone just talk on stage seems rather silly and boring but it is a thing. It's absolutely the person's personality that makes either of these things work. The only difference when it comes to watching people playing video games is that video games are involved. I guess there's still a stigma around video games making people think stuff is silly and absurd because video games are involved. I'm not trying to be passionately defensive of watching people game but when you think about it at its essence, there's really no difference between watching Jimmy Kimmel or your favourite streamer, and I find it odd that people legitimately think one is strange without thinking the other isn't, it's contradictory.
come to think of it, jimmy kimmel got started on the radio, and radio is basically just listening to people talk and have conversations. using the same logic, why not just gather up a few friends and have conversations with them rather than listen to others converse? his argument is so damn flawed.
In seriousness, I don't think people understand how talk show skits work. They're almost never written by the host.
Their delivery is sometimes what makes the difference though. For example, there are a couple jokes that Jon Stewart made that I thought at the back of my head would be funny if Stephen Colbert delivered it.
