They really should have gone with a premade engine. They spent all these years mostly just developing their inhouse one. They have no game content to speak of after all this time, just an engine with a lot of assets.
What's the hype around half life 3 anyways? You just run around and shoot things? Anyway, my best explanation for overgrowth is that it's a level based reflex fighting game with some stealth elements and a campaign. For every scenario you have to 'scout ahead' and plan your approach. Or anyway, in Lugaru i had, the fighting is actually challenging. It's not everyones cup of tea but i can clearly see the appeal.
Dumb comparison, Half Life 3 is the long-anticipated resolution to gamings greatest cliffhanger, the sequel to an immensely successful series of classic PC games. I don't really need to belittle Overgrowth any more to make my point.
The (old) weekly dev blogs were great and taught a lot about game tech. That alone made it worth buying back when they did the bundle with Natural Selection 2. Glad to see it finally nearing release.
