Another reason to end the war quicker (besides the loss of lives), was to keep Russia out of Japan and solidifying America's control of the Pacific. Russia vowed to enter the Pacific theater as soon as the war in Europe was completely finished. They would have entered the Pacific within a few months so the US had to act pretty quickly.
The bombings where justified, to save millions of American and Japanese life's. If they invaded the Japaneses home land it would have been D-day again, x100.
Even after both of the bombs where dropped on Japan, several military commanders wanted to continue the war in till they pushed the Americans back back or they all died.
It was a necessary evil. Please stop going, "Herp derp, America is evil." Look up some of the shit Japan did during WW2, Nanking Massarce and their treatment of Allied P.O.Ws
really, japan was ready to quit but their retarded fucking emperor wouldn't let them, either that or they were all too brainwashed to understand the amount of shit about to rain down on them
Why the fuck are you all trying to argue this? It happened just about 70 years ago. Who gives a fuck now.

Maybe most of the family of the 170,000 that died in a flash of a eye.
It would have been nerve wracking to have been on the planes in either bombing. They had no definitive proof that they'd be safe and sound out of the blast radius of the bomb, and were more or less gambling their lives the entire time. Pretty intense.
Well what are you gonna do about it now?

imagine what would've happened if Russia did enter the Pacific theater.
To go along with the thread, I call justified.
So because I could care less about a bunch of people died almost 100 years that makes me heartless? lol
Uhuh. Where is the part I care again?
If you don't care, don't post, simple as that.
From what my parents have previous told me, I had relatives living in Nagasaki years ago.
I'm not sure who they are, or what happened to them, but I'll assume that they're dead from the blast
Im fucking shitting it. I found an old T-Shirt in my drawer and have been wearing it today. As i was going to bed I saw the backwards reflection of the words on it. It caught my eye, made me remember. I looked down and read my shirt to see NAGASAKI written on it, i was like creeeppyyy. Then beside the writing, there is a fucking big 8/8.
FFS im wearing a fucking nagasaki memorial, by complete fluke, on the day..
Something everyone in America should be proud over, fuck let's nuke America twice on highly populated areas and where they have there facilities creating stuff that can be used to put a gun together.

You're dumb
I believe it was a completely justfiable option. The Japanese track record previous to both bombings was horrible (to say the least) and the entire Japanese, arrogance mentality made it inevitable. A tragic necessity.
Rather than sprout stupid comments like BloodYScar (it wasn't surprising but still) we should be taking this opportunity to reflect, honor the dead and move on. No point in starting a huge argument over this.
Happy 65th anniversary everyone!

This is actually kinda scary. Who know how many "Tsar Bomba" size bombs we have today.
None, the one detonated was a tech demonstrator used to scare the west
You're dumb
And your avatar is scaring the living fuck out of me.
Happy 65th. Also, I know how to end the war in the east. Do it again.

Civilian casualties should never be necessary to win a war. The idea of collateral damage is cold in my opinion. If using the nukes would have saved lives, I'd have been okay with using them on carefully chosen military locations within view, and out of range, of people. Whether or not the bombed cities themselves housed military locations, the surrounding towns were devastated.
I think that merely seeing the power of the bombs would have had nearly the same effect upon the Japanese as using it on them. I cannot be certain, but it is still a shame, and a sad mark upon us, that it came to such an end.
As to nuclear weaponry, now that it exists, we have no choice but to keep it in our nations' holsters and flash it from beneath our coats now and again. Threat of nuclear holocaust has likely prevented several all-out wars, especially between the US and the Soviets, and it keeps others from using it themselves. Though peace out of fear is not what I would consider ideal, it has protected us all nonetheless, and we can not give back the knowledge of technology we have learned.

That's the worst idea I've ever heard
That's literally the equivalent of shooting someone to cure their cancer
Happy 65th. Also, I know how to end the war in the east. Do it again.
How about America doesn't bomb millions of civilians and start a world war? That sounds like a much better idea.
Kay.
Tell me something I don't know.
So because I could care less about a bunch of people died almost 100 years that makes me heartless? lol
Uhuh. Where is the part I care again?
oh gee you're so apathetic and cool.
It's a significant event in human history, and whether you care about the lives lost on an emotional level or not, it's absolutely worth discussing. Ya fuckin' moron.
I understand why Truman decided to drop nuclear weapons on Japan. If we hadn't, the war might have carried on to take even more lives than the causalities caused during the bombings.
This.
Operation Downfall would have involved anywhere from six to eight nuclear weapons, with troop occupation within 48 hours after the bombings.
And casualties estimated in the millions on both sides.
I don't know if the nukes were really necessary to end the war, but it would have been nice if they found some way to avoid using them.
Only more American lives would've been lost.
That's the worst idea I've ever heard

and what if it shoots the cancer off and nothing else? although I do agree, thats a pretty stupid idea.
Hopefully it's the last time we need to use a nuke.
