its still safer to have the light red for cross traffic, no matter what way you put it

I was driving my uncle's 530i the other night. I felt the car become really vibrate-y. I pulled off into a school parking lot, and I felt the car nearly bottom out. Got out of the car, tire was flat. Took it off to install the spare, and the inside of the tire looked like this

I found a random tire abandoned in a parking lot today. It's not hard to see why.
Alright, I've always wondered.

what the hell are these on the traffic lights?
I'll answer this also, even though everyone has already only because I Deal with these on a daily basis. First, not every city has them due to traffic, budgets, or otherwise unneeded. (like LA - they would be worthless there). The object is a sensor for emergency vehicles equipped with code-3 equipment. When a police car (or ambulance.. or firetruck) is running Code 3 or even Code 2 (given the right equipment) they can trigger these sensors. The most common way to activate a sensor is through a light pattern. This is done by the flashing white strobe in the center (of most) lightbars.

the center
There is another way to trigger the sensor using radio waves but I have not seen those around my parts. Once the sensor is activated, all of the lights will be put on a short timer to trigger them red with the exception of the one that is being drove toward. You can know which way an emergency vehicle is approaching due to the light near the sensor. If it is solid - you better get moving. If it is flashing - you have nothing to worry about.
If you really want to test some of these out.. take a stinger flashlight and 'sting' the sensor. It might trip. User be warned - this is highly illegal.

I've heard you can trip it with your high beams if you flash a certain way, but I've never seen it done, or tried it. :v:

The old days you could. Now it has to be a pretty fast strobe

I drive a bus with the engine up front.
You almost never hear emergency vehicles coming :/ I've had two police cars sneak up on me in the 8 or so second gap between mirror checks.
edit
shit, even in a standard tour/charter liner with a rear engine mount it's still pretty damn hard to hear emergency vehicles, especially if you have any passengers. If you have passengers, forget about it.
Went to a euro meet, one of the guys with a Modded Volvo S70 blew an oil seal in the parking lot, he had to get it towed home. :(
Did a good bit of stuff today, it's in the other thread.
I'll throw some pics up tomorrow of my updated engine bay.
That little black sensor detects the flashing lights on emergency vehicles to turn the lights green. Cameras are taller and usually silver and are used mostly for vehicle detection (if they're mounted where that little black one is). If you see a camera on the TIP of the pole, or mounted anywhere up the pole, they're monitoring cameras used to view the intersection remotely with no detection equipment. Cities these days are moving away from loop detection and veering more towards camera detection, so you're going to see a lot more shit hanging off of lights in the coming years.
The only other cameras used are the red light cameras, which are pretty obvious as they're giant boxes mounted by their lonesome away from the signals, and are only present on intersection marked as such. It's kind of cool actually, federal law states that in order to catch red light runners with cameras they are required to post notices around the intersection that cameras are being used. The downside is that people often slam on their brakes the second a light turns yellow and cause more fender benders than the camera catches runners.
I am so fucking shitting myself I drove back there and checked.
Thanks for the info,
Yea, the light I think I ran had those silver ones with a giant stick under it that looked like an ordinary camera. What do you mean by vehicle detection?
I guess I'm safe then? I did not notice those giant red box cameras anywhere.

We have those cameras at a few locations, Some of them are for vechicle motion detection for stop lights. They are fucking amazing for the fact there is never traffic at this location or waiting. If theres one car at a light it doesn't cycle through all of them just lets that car go. Then if multiple cars show up at different times it cycles through who got there first. Imagine a stop sign that tells you when its your turn basically.
We have a few others that are direct feeds to our local police stations, Very few but for people who disconcern red lights often in these areas.
our areas have these at the top of the pole then a box at the bottom

Speaking of which, We don't have signs stating that there are red light cameras. I'll be bringing this to my PD tommorow.
Bad news. I got screwed out of a Turbo project for me.

I love it when you're driving something with 2 wheels and it's too small to be recognized so the lights will never turn green unless someone pulls up behind you in a car
I had one near my home and once ran a red light without even stopping and then noticed cops sitting in the intersection ~20m away

Not all states are required to notify drivers of the cameras in the intersection. I forget which ones though.

Guess this is as good a time as any, haha. Sold my '98 BMW on Saturday and bought this '08 Miata Grand Touring. 6 speed manual, bilstein suspension, and a limited slip diff. Already ordered my exhaust, intake, lowering springs, and sway bars. :)

Yeah, I was sad watching it drive away, especially since I dumped exuberant amounts of money into it and never really finished it. I'd never seen it cruising before since I'm the only one out of all my friends that drives a 5speed, it was kind of cool watching the new owner on my tail. Never realized how low that car looked driving around. But the Miata is so much fun, I missed my NB Miata for a year and I've always regretted selling it. The NC is incredible, they added just enough power to make it sportier than the previous models and it handles just as well. I feel like the drop and sways I'm putting on will turn it into an autocrossing monster.

I wish I had the funds to do a V8 swap, or any swap for that matter. Drop a 2jz in there or something.
Peniscolada, for your new MV4, what did you get the 4.6 litre sounds from? They're pure sex. (Although i feel like they'd fit better on the 5.6 litre but w/e it's your car.)

Dude those late 70s/early 80s Trans-Ams are fucking DOGS. the 77 had a 454 that made just under 200 hp :\.
The 80 that you posted has a big block too(I think), and is still garbage.

they had a red hard top that I kept eyeballing. 32k price. Had dark rims and a black top. Manual also. The 28 mpg highway scared me off.

Oh I'm fully aware how shitty the engines were, that's why I'd do a major overhaul or drop a crate motor in (if I could afford it)
Also I want to put in a CB radio in my car, is it easy?

Depends, do you want a magnetic mounted antenna? or one that you neet to drill a hole in the roof for, the ma-maounts are easier, but don't work as well, whereas the hardmount ones work better, but require you drilling a hole in the roof, and routing cables above the head liner.
Well fuck that then
I am up shit creek without an air wrench. These bolts are way to tight for me to remove.

Yeah, this is one of the automated hardtops, it's awesome. :) 32k seems a bit steep for an NC, though, my car was only 18k and has 44k on the clock.
Flat tire?
Nope, caliper bolts. After 13 years of this car being used (160k mi) the brakes have never been changed and the bolts are WAY tight for me. I put my entire weight against them and they dont even move
Soak them in some penetrating oil, or try wd-40 if you don't have that. I used wd-40 on my wheel nuts when i couldn't get them off and it helped.

We used to have bottles of both of those around my garage.. but when I need to find either of them neither of them are there. Fucking hell.
