Got new tires for my Avalon today, ~$430. Mid-range Cooper tires. The guy said that the alignment on all of my wheels was way off. Each wheel was pointing in a slightly different direction at a slightly different camber, so the steering was like a '50s Cadillac and it would veer when going over bumps. Now that I've got the new tires on, it's quieter, feels less scary when going around corners quickly, and the alignment means I no longer have to constantly adjust the steering wheel. :v:
I love yardsales.. Met a nice older gentleman today, he had some old Bug parts (mid-70s). Tail light, headlights + bezels, stuff like that. He had owned a couple Ghias and Bugs but doesn't anymore. The engine in my Bug is a '74, and as luck would have it, he had a perfectly good 34 PICT-3 carburetor - the same model as what's on my car now. Only difference is this one is ported for a SVDA and not DVDA distributor but that doesn't matter, if I ever need to use the carb, I'd just have to plug the retard port on the distributor and time to 7.5 BTDC and it'd work fine. It'll be cool just to have a chance to take the thing apart and all that jazz, plus i'll come out the other side with a perfectly good back up carburetor should i need it somewhere down the road. Oh, and I got the box of misc. body parts and the carburetor for a whopping $5. I'm gonna turn around and sell the headlight bezels and miscellaneous parts, get back my $5 and invest $20 in a rebuild kit for the carburetor. not too bad for a lazy Sunday morning.
So within 24 hours of my car being road ready, my rear passenger caliper decides that one of its bolts doesn't want to be part of the team anymore and flew off, later to be retrieved a few hundred feet from where my car jammed to a halt. It has punctured a hole through the wheel but not the tire, and it wasn't the engine that exploded so that's good news. Bad news is I just shelled out another 200 bucks for a new one, and now I have to wait another few weeks to get it and put it back on the car. And to think I was going to drive it to work tomorrow..
First time driving manual. Wasn't as bad as I thought I was going to be, although I still suck at starting to move from a stop. Also stalled like 6 times on the same hill start.
I'm eventually gonna rebuild/replace the entire engine sometime
From my experience, it is easier to replace than rebuild. Rebuilds get quite costly but you don't know the miles or the treatment of a replacement engine, so either way it's a risk. Anyways, I got my manual boost controller installed along with new vacuum likes on the turbo. It was a pain because I had to figure out how to mount it in the engine bay without drilling a new hole. So I had to make a bracket to bring it up really close to the turbo. I'll get some pics tomorrow, to tired tonight to deal with it.
I spent over 7 hours cleaning absolutely everything in the garage, throwing away some junk and figuring out what's worth the space and getting rid of all the fucking cobwebs. Now there's not 2 feet worth of junk lining the wall that I have to worry about hitting. I don't think the garage has ever been this clean short of stains and stuff/cobwebs you would have to wipe off the walls. I know at least my side of the garage is the cleanest it has ever been. Hey so I have a straight 6 325is (e30) and I bought a single straight pipe(nocats) magnaflow exhaust with 2 tips on the end. I'm wondering if I can just make a Y pipe coming out to hook up to the engine. Diagram: How will that effect performance, air flow, and will it even work properly?

hey everyone, new here so i don't really know the works and jerks of the site just yet, but i guess this would be the thread i should be posting this in. i've got a '78 land cruiser FJ40; it's currently straight stock and i've been working on it for a while now but i need some opinions on my plans. i've got the car down to the chassis and i've been tossing up about throwing in a new engine and tranny. i'm looking at a 12H-T diesel engine to replace the current 2F 4.2L straight six, and putting in a H55 5-speed tranny to replace the current 4-speed that is already in there. has anyone here down a project like this and do you have any tips or recommendations? any and all help is much appreciated.
