It's really not useful to have a 100+ pages because it's virtually impossible to follow the thread at that point unless you have been there from the beginning.

Apparently threads with a large number of posts are hard on the database server. I'm not exactly sure what they do to make them so bad though.

It doesn't have to do with bandwidth, you can could have one 200 page thread or four 50 page threads, if you loaded each page you'd use the same amount.
Why do you get banned for misusing spoiler tags
Maybe when someone requests to view a thread, the server reads the whole file used for that thread.
