Anything by Myazaki/Studio Ghibli is the best place to start. They are the disney of anime - pixar even watches them for inspiration. My favorite movies by him are Princess Monokoe and Spirited Away.
As far as anime series go, most anime that is in the "standard" 24-26 episode format is a good watch. Stay away from anime-series that have 500+ episodes because they are usually the "stereotypical" anime most people think about. There's some really good 500+ epsiode anime's out there, but they aren't the kind of thing you can get into unless you a really big fan of anime/the genre in general.
As far as the 24-26 episode format animes go, the best one out there IMO hands down is Cowboy Bebop. There is also Samuari Champloo, which I think was done by the same person. Both of these are considered classics, that I think anybody who normaly isn't into anime will really love. Ghost in the Shell is another good one, but I think it might be apart of a large series. I know there is a movie though that doesn't require you to have watched the whole series to understand.
There's other stuff I hear is really good but I've never seen (Neon Genesis, Akira, Trigun, etc).
nichijou is really good too if you've got a thing for cute stuff
Oh and Howl's Moving Castle. Fucking great movie. I plan on watching it before Bioshock Infinite comes out, because they are in the same veign of visual style/setting :D
