This is late but it's goign to be awkward, no getting around that. Its why I prefer to meet up as friends or w/e so its not so "serious" as a date if I've never met the guy before.
But at the same time dates are meant to try and get to know the guy and have a nice time, so being awkward about it especially if you never done something like that before is pretty norm
Basically, you'll probably feel like you fucked up afterwards :v: and as such don't worry about it, you probably didn't. It's good experience to have anyways :)

I was just too shy and nervous. I couldn't gather up the courage to say anything simple like "you're cute". Just a bunch of small talk and really bad quiet unfunny jokes.

Sounds like a successful first date from someone you've never met before honestly :v: , and if you've never been on a date before too
My advice on a date is do things that are interactive or involve groups. These are foolproof to actually breaking the ice, and making a memorable time. I.E. I took my BF to a game night my college was doing, and we had a lot of fun playing card/board games and then heading to steak and shake late at night for some dins.
Some ideas would be laser tag, bowling (maybe lol), or anything you can think of that'll involve actually doing something with said date, versus something where it's really easy to just fall into a pattern of scilence (a movie for example).

We are both gaymers, he has dished more game hours on steam than I have. He only works part time on weekends at some thrift store for 8bux an hour and told me his roommate pays for most of the things at his place.

I was wanting to play board games or something too. But his apartment was literally just a television, and two rooms with mattresses and computer desks in them.
