You're not going to ruin anything if he's ready and willing to do what you want to do. I'm sure if you ask him about going to the next level, and he says he's willing to, everything will be fine. I, for one, would be perfectly fine with staying friends after a relationship as long as my counterpart didn't hurt me by, say, cheating or something. No need to ruin a friendship because a relationship didn't work out.
I would ask him if he feels the same as you, if he wants to proceed to the next level.
