Honestly I think it's because there are people that are praying for this to be successful. Not good, successful.
The groups pushing and defending this movie are the same ones that brood over the fact that playing as a woman in some games is just a choice and not mandatory. They are essentially ideological evangelists, they're not invested in the movie itself but rather using the movie as a tool.
They are banking on this being good because it's going to be a litmus test for whether their social politics will do any good for studios.
Don't be surprised if the following happens.
1) Receives hyped reviews from certain sites
2) Later has articles downplaying faults
3) Shortly after Director, Cast, and Crew are called sexist/racist
