It's the other way around here, while people aren't shunned for liking sports (hell, two of our classmates have been in national U-18 teams for rugby and basketball), they aren't exactly at the top of the social tree because of that, they're at the top for being FUN and INTERESTING. Your american stereotypes for high schools just doesn't work here, I guess.
they don't work in most of europe
as for me, I'm one of those ethereal people that you can't really classify in one group or another
I don't see why there's this bullying issue. In High School, I've told people that I like computers and people end up coming to me for help, I've told people that I've played World of Warcraft for 4 years and they don't give a damn. I've never been bullied which confuses me because I'm kinda a giant nerd.
It sort of relies upon who you're friends with too, I chill with the people that are sort of one notch underneath the popular people.
Sports are meaningless wastes of time, just like video games and everything else people do for fun, unless you're extremely good and make a career out of it or use it as a fun means to keeping active besides something like jogging, which can get monotonous.
Same thing happened to me, I used to get bullied for being "good at using computers" by morons who don't even know what to do of their useless life.
At least I can do something, morons.
Holy shit yeah. I used to look at those kids in like middle school and just think how retarded they are at not knowing how to type in a URL or how to even open THE FUCKING BROWSER
When I went to high school.
-Performing magic tricks - I would get people bugging me during lunch period to do some. All the fucking time. It was annoying sometimes, but it was worth seeing the looks of awe on everyone in the audience. Until you get that one guy who spouts out "I know how you did that" and tells everyone and ruins the illusion. But then I just tell the crowd that's not how I did it and they believe me.
-Warhammer 40,000 - Most did not know what this is but once I told them I would instantly be told "You're wasting your money" or once, strangely, I was told "How gay, you play with dolls"
-Programming/Game design - I tell people who ask that I planned on going to college for video game programming and I'm instantly told by the people who want to be some unrealistic job like sports superstar that I have a very unrealistic dream. WTF? Getting a job at as a game developer is a hell of a lot easier than "sports superstar". So easy that you can always start your own.
In summary, I hated every minute of high school.
My hobbies
The ukulele- people like that I guess. It's become ridiculously over popular lately. Everyone's getting one and saying they can play just because they have one.
Theatre- 50% of my friends are in it, so they don't judge, but the ones that aren't in it respect it, and everyone at my high school liked going to the plays anyway. So a lot of people respected that.
Astronomy- Everyone I talked to about it thought it was interesting. I love outer space. I have a $570 telescope I got for my 18th birthday and I can see the moon in bright, up close detail. It's so bad ass. :v:
Drawing- but who the fuck doesn't draw?
Me. My writing/drawing ability is so poor that I can't even read my own written name without difficulty.
:saddowns:
I just realized I pretty much have no hobbies besides video gaming, debating, reading and this forum.
Fuck.
I've always wanted to get into arching.
Damn it looks like so much fun.
It's better to have a few hobbies instead of 50 different ones.
That's so true. Be good at the few ones, rather than horrible/lame at a lot.
I'm a paraglider pilot. Fuck dem skaters boy, flying is way more fun.
I used to fuck around with bionicle a LOT... I'm starting to again. I'm trying to make a crossbow.
I DJ and run a mobile discotheque with a friend.
And I love it :D
I am at:
Mountain,downhill biking.
Music(mixing and play guitar)
Theatre (I am one of the best actors in my school.)
Bodybuilding.
Also marathon biking (xc marathons)
smoking weed boosts your coolness at least 25%(in reference to OP)

true and tried.
I live in one of these. It sucks.
I do too, I'm not an asshole :smith:
I take pride and joy in playing/modding games or attempting something artistic. For some reason whenever I tell teachers, guidance counselors, or other people that I want to go into Digital Art/Game Design it seems to surprise them like it's some sort of alien job. My friends don't react the same way, they usually tell me "I'll play all the games you make man!" which makes me feel a bit giddy.
trolling. Much to my surprise, some girls find it quite endearing for some reason.
Writing. Usually when I say this, they ask me what genre. To this I always say the same thing.
"romantic fantasy comedy horror erotica"
Shockingly, two people have replied "Ooh, my favourite."

start giving this whole forum a good read, you'll need to look into 445nm diodes. Someone called Jayrob custom made my laser using a flashlight host, the aluminum heat sink and copper core were made by him. They're others like him and you'll need to buy a diode from someone. the battery and charger from a cheap flashlight place (AW 18650 2600 mAh preferred) so make sure the host takes that battery
iunno i have like 5 hobbies if you call them that

i wanna do this so much but i think i am going to do that thing where you make a laser from a bluray diode first.
I don't have a hobby because I'm shit at everything
Piano, luckily, I hang out with people that don't really care.
"Socially Acceptable" things are always kind relative. Its how you play the situations rather than "what you got".
You know, When people ask about your hobbies, they don't really care.
But its rather part of a ritual which is used to get to know one and his preferences.
So when dealing with business you want to give a good image of yourself, So you lie.
Same goes with anything, because it works prety well.
So basically you should lie, but not get caught for lying. Come up with half-truths. Things that you know. this allows you to deliver in the situation if necesary.
So basically, Don't say that you're a bodybuilder if you're thin as a stick.
It's better to have a few hobbies instead of 50 different ones.
This isn't true! Diversity is the spice of life!
But why do you want to know the plays? Knowing how to play sports right doesn't really much, well it helps you with planning and shit, but the plays in itself are useless.
It helps if you want to go into a coaching/playing capacity. You have to get to grips with the game whether its playing or observing. You wouldn't play a video game without going through the tutorials, it's the same with sports. Before you say sports are useless, what about community projects? Charity foundations?
You guys worry about shit too much
A healthy hobby must not be a criminal activity.
Breaking into someone's home, hacking into an Email account, peeping at women's shower, kicking cats and dogs, laundering money, trolling a person to a suicidal rage and even vandalism should not be a hobby.
[editline]10th September 2011[/editline]
A healthy hobby is like flying a kite, hiking in the mountain, making models out of clay, collecting toys, riding ponies or horses, drawing and sketching, playing the guitar or sitar, watching a paint dry off the wall and even fishing
[editline]10th September 2011[/editline]
i use to sail before. Sailing can be a hobby too
Airsoft. It's the only way I can talk about firearms during lunch without being suspended for being "emotionally distraught."
True story.
I have also always wondered why airsoft is so popular, its like killing and people admire it, horrible
