People living on minimum wage aren't able to save any money to make more significant purchases down the line. People living on minimum wage are contributing to the economy they're just not doing so at a very large scale. If minimum wage was higher, there's a chance that more money makes it's way back into the economy.
But honestly, it doesn't matter. The minimum wage could be 1$ and nothing will really change in the western world. No matter what the value of a "wage" is, it's always going to be as low as it's possible for the company to keep it, to generate as much profit as possible at any given time as publicly traded companies are legally compelled to do. There's no situation in which the middle class and lower class aren't abused over the next 100 years.
There are all sorts of merits and demerits to raising the minimum wage. However, if you're middle class, you're not affected (other than negatively perhaps if you own your own business) by minimum wage legislation. If you are, then you aren't middle class. You could make the Keynesian spending argument, but that is very tangential.

Here is wage growth by decile. Britain does best, and of the countries listed, by most measures made the most radical free market reforms from 1988 - 2008 (and even more so from 1980 - 1988, which were probably coming into affect from 1980 - 1988).
In addition, here is a dataset I made:

The only country which made up ground on the US that I listed was the UK, which made the most radical free market reforms.
