The presidential debates have always been an "I'm right and they're wrong and this is why" format. You rob the candidates of their opportunity to make themselves look good by making their opponent look dumb (What is Allepo?) if you do the fact-checking for them. I don't like this format. Its unproductive political nonsense that doesn't actually create involve cooperating to solve a problem.
The thing is, they aren't supposed to be lying in the first place. A debate isn't about who's better at calling out the other on their bullshit, it's about a conflict of ideals. Two people with different ideas trying to convince the people that they've got a better solution. Nixon actually said it pretty well in the Kennedy/Nixon debate, that he agreed with Kennedy on what they wanted for the American people, they just disagreed on the method to get there. But the critical thing is that there needs to be a basis in fact for a debate to work. If someone can't debate without lying, then they can't debate. Plain and simple.
The format of the debate is set up to persuade people to vote for a candidate. When you meet with other business people or engineers or laborers, you talk about what works, what doesn't, what everyone can do, when you can get it done, ect. By the end of the meeting you are actually doing something productive to address a problem or demand. The candidates never come together and modify their plans using each other's resources. The debate should be about how each candidate can work with the other to meet the common needs of both. Instead its "MY IDEAS ARE THE BEST AND THEIR'S SUCKS". Its unproductive in that respect.
Before you can begin to cooperate both parties need to be fairly informed. Clinton was absolutely attacked during the primaries for not having any real policies of her own and electing to adopt the bulk of Sanders' platform. Trump has an even less definite plan. How many economic policies has he released to date? How many positions has he taken on most of our current political issues? The things he does have to bring to the table are largely considered to be terrible by reputable historically impartial sources.

Haven't read them myself, but I guess there's something now.
Supposedly his campaign just (yesterday) released 30 pages about his dubious economical reforms. Haven't read them myself, but I guess there's something now.
It's telling to me that he would release them late Sunday night right before the debate. His economic policy has been consistently terrible. By changing his platform so soon before the debate he's preventing analysts from having ample opportunity to scrutinize his plan prior to the debate. People can't run models or check the math to make sure he's not pulling numbers out of his ass or to check whether his plan works in conjunction with the rest of his policy. People are basically going to have to take whatever he's put out at face value until someone comes and does the work, essentially making fact checking him in this area impossible. That more than likely means he's hiding something. That should scream red flag to anyone with any basic cognitive abilities.
That more than likely means he's hiding something. That should scream red flag to anyone with any basic cognitive abilities.
If this election has taught me anything, it's that that's a rare ability to have.
The ads for this thing are hilarious, they feel like UFC ads
ARE YOU READY?
making a prediction right now hillary isn't going to pass out or anything, and as a result several people are going to suggest it was a body double or something
If this election has taught me anything, it's that that's a rare ability to have.
Was it Carlin that said "think of the most average guy you know and remember that half of the population is dumber than that?" That's been a guiding principle through my life thus far. Another thing that's been driving me crazy, is that Trump's supporters will often talk about how it makes sense for Trump to pull a bunch of petty shit or find ways to cleverly dodge the issues at hand because it's good for his campaign in some way. Changing his platform right before a debate is good for Trump in that it's bad for Clinton to prep against, but it's also terrible for voters. If you were actually in favor of Trump's initial economic policies (hah) and voted for him on those principles during the Primary, you've now been robbed. If you're someone that wants to dig deep into issues of policy, you've also been had. If you don't personally have the time or tools to do so yourself but find it agreeable to listen to what experts have to say, you've also been screwed. These constant change-ups leave voters in a situation where they don't know what Trump's message is or how long he'll be willing to stick with it. If his policy was good and he stuck to his guns about it that should inspire confidence right? If his policy was terrible and he was humble about his mistakes and slowly improved that should also inspire confidence. Instead, Trump keeps ignoring criticism, attacking the messengers, doubling down on bad decisions and then quietly when no one is looking changing things and pretending that nothing's changed at all. Red flags, red flags, red flags.
