God, TGWTG sure are a nutty group. Regardless of what everyone is saying about these videos not having a point of whatever, I'm getting a right kick out of these. I always saw TGWTG as the "weirdos" of the online content creator community.

It's internet drama at its finest.

I think it's pretty clear that this series of videos is meant to be like cautionary tales of internet fame, rather than just outright archival and retrospectives. Linkara's video boiled down to more than just "lol this dude wants to fuck the green M&M", it was basically "look, if you're gonna constantly put yourself out there as a self-professed feminist, understand that shit will turn ugly if it comes out you secretly get off to fanfics about rape". It's the Streisand Effect; you've got internet personalities like Shadman and Julian from OneyPlays who are super up-front about what they get off to and no one really gives them shit for it. They roll with the punches instead of turning into a lolcow. Lewis tried to maintain his moral highground despite getting really into fanfic about Wonder Woman raping Supergirl, so he ends up looking like a hypocrite at best and a hilarious creep at worst. With Joe, it's basically "respect your fans and they'll respect you". I really get the impression that no one would have cared if he wanted to talk about Game of Thrones or take a hiatus if he was just civil about it. But once you cave to the trolls and start calling all your fans entitled idiots for not reacting positively to a change in content, they have no reason to try and level with you. James Rolfe has put out statements saying that he's doing AVGN less frequently and discontinuing Monster Madness because he's got other shit he wants to do. But he conveyed it in a really measured, respectful way, so the worst you're gonna find is "I'm disappointed, but I get why you're doing this". A lot of TGWTG seems to be people who just weren't prepared to balance the demands of internet fame and the desires of their own creative passions. The second you buy into your own hype and start assuming you're doing people a great service by giving them your time and effort (even if they don't like the content you're producing), things are gonna crash and burn real fast.

People like to raise LordKat onto this pedestal of being "the only sane man" but really he's just a nobody that got really bitter that everyone else took off and he remained largely irrelevant IMO. He never got popular when I BET he was hoping TGWTG would bring him views. Also his website is fucking garbage, shit, it's even worse NOW than when he was on TGWTG. I made better websites in highschool which is hilarious considering how he loved to talked about his extensive qualifications while moaning about the job market back in the day.
isnt this guy like some infamous gamergate-era schmuck? like, gamergate aside im pretty sure he was one of those loudmouthed assholes who kept screeching "SJW SJW" whenever he could, while spreading misinformation in a campaign meant to spread actual truth
He did nothing relevant or positive for gamergate, and he also doesn't understand when someone doesn't a give a fuck about libertarian politics.

Just from listening to his podcasts, especially when he talks about TGWITG, you can tell he has his own set of issues.
I was hoping he would talk about the whole blistered thumbs aka the video game division of TGWTG that went down under because of Joe or something like that, but instead we got recent news that doesn't even fit the video of "looking back at past mistakes" theme since it's a recent one.
I wish he commented on that whole VGA fiasco. I can remember actually being on Joe's side when I was a kid; in hindsight, I have no idea what I was thinking. Talk about hilariously unprofessional, holy shit. This one kinda feels like a miss, just because the other videos presented the "this is what you should avoid" moral after seeing what brought the subject to that point (we got to see Linkara's failed webcomic, the early warning signs of Spoony's personality, etc.) With Joe, yeah, it's clear he went about things in the wrong way, but I also think acting unprofessional and immature isn't exactly a change of pace for him (see the Geoff Keighly "interview", all the Blistered Thumbs drama, monetizing his reaction video after JewWario died, etc.) There was a lot to cover, so this feels a little light compared to the others. Frankly, I'd like to see an entire video for each TGWTG anniversary movie, since apparently those were just a bunch of egos and genitals mashing together for a few weeks while they got everything shot.
i thought the moral of the video was essentially "Your audience won't know how hard it is to create videos, you need to make that known or your fanbase will go nuts if you one day take a break"
I thought it was more generally about communicating well with your audience and making the reasons behind your decisions clear.

But considering I've heard enough alleged behind the scenes stuff from Channel Awesome that i wouldn't doubt that they do actually have some problems.

I'm late but I'll say it anyways. The gist is that Angry Joe wanted a sit-down interview with Geoff Keighley but what he got was two minutes instead. Joe was going to put on his personality but backfired as soon as he says he's got a bone to pick with him. While Geoff kind of dismissed him, Joe couldn't backup any of his complaints about the VGA. So in hindsight, it comes off as unprofessional. The one with Felicia Day was pretty awkward too. of course this was like a long time ago. He's gotten better.
