Except if you're going to argue insane things, you might as well break it down logically.
Animals exist, they are tangible things, you can see them out side. You know they exist. If people feel connected with them, I don't see how that isn't something perfectly normal that hasn't been around for next to for ever.
12ft blue smurfs are a creation for a movie. We know for a fact that they do not exist and that there is no possible way to rationalize having anything in common with something that doesn't exist nor ever has.
