New forum wants to encourage active participation and new thread exposure by discouraging users camping in magic bubbles such as fp_read, possibly replacing it with a notification system instead. Nothing about rooting out users with certain browsing habits. This is what he posted (11 days) ago:
fp_read is a problem. People read 4 threads and then go to fp_read and keep refreshing. So then no-one posts new threads because they don't get read, because people are only checking for their threads. That's anti-forum and it's a problem we want to solve. Not saying fp_read won't come back, just saying it enables behaviour we don't want to encourage. Will show new reply notifications etc in the alerts system, so it'll be less vital.

God forbid I use the forums in the way that's most comfortable for me and not in the exact precise way that Garry intends [editline]0[/editline] Hopefully something like read.php/the ability to subscribe to specific threads exists on the new forums
Yeah I agree with the general sentiment of this. If what we're assuming about garry's intentions are for the new forum are true, then I think they're misplaced. The ideal design of any forum would be one that's conducive to being flexible and well-rounded so that anyone can get what they want out of it, rather than being strict in function. I think that the reason fp is as good as it is, and why it retains so many regulars, is because it's good at that. The larger global community is great and all, but there's nothing wrong with the more localized communities that mostly keep to themselves. This is what he posted (11 days) ago:
Actually reading it in his own words, I think this is actually entirely agreeable and in-line with what I think makes a good forum. The biggest drawback of fp imo and what makes it particularly clunky to use at times is the lack of notifications. After using any forum with them it becomes a massive pain to come back here and readjust.
Bookmark your favorite threads?
That wouldn't take you to the first unread post.
That seems fine (the notifications), I just want a way to see new posts in the threads that I care about and could totally see something like that being removed to force us to ~experience the forums~ When doing so would just make the whole experience clunky and unwieldy
What if they switch up the subscription feature to include sections instead of just individual threads, user could keep track of sections they find interesting (GD, FT, SH etc.).
To be honest I have a habit of only really checking popular threads.
Relax, guys, Garry is trying to help us find forum-based philosophical authenticity by forcing us to reevaluate our discussion and browsing identities and removing us from the comfort zones that smother our passion for ourselves. Truly, I welcome this new age of existentialist web development.
To be honest I have a habit of only really checking popular threads.
I use popular threads to find new threads to read and read threads to follow and keep up with them. That's how I've used Facepunch for years now.
That wouldn't take you to the first unread post.
Well, technically... :v: Bookmarking this should work. https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=[thread_id]&goto=newpost
the trick to ban evasion is to simply not get caught and the best way of doing that is not doing it at all happy to help and contribute
I'd say it is actually really easy to make sockpuppet accounts and not get caught on a lot of forums.
Bookmark your favorite threads?
That's such a clunky and inefficient way of doing things though. [editline]15th November 2017[/editline] I use fp_read and subscribed threads heavily to keep up with the threads I had already view or invested in, before checking for new threads. Currently fp_read also shows most recently created threads and most recent created posts, but these are off the screen and most people don't scroll down, heck I forgot they existed until I thought about it for this post. Instead of killing or watering down fp_read, try to reorganize it, maybe make it expandable categories, or make new threads / new posts at the top of the page, then scroll down for subscribed and read. As said before, notifications for quotes and user mentions would be nice too.
Personal bookmarks, users get 4 tabs (red, blue, green, yellow) to mark certain threads with, so instead of looking for the "X NEW POSTS" you can just look for your tags by color.
I almost never use fp_read or popular threads.
I don't even know where these options are available.
Include fp_read.php but make it so you only get a certain number of thread slots and have to pay Garry Coins to unlock more because if you're gamifying a website you have to shoehorn it into every single aspect to try to justify its existence
I should be an EA exec
fp_read and subscribed threads are the only reason I stick with certain threads and continue posting in them (like this one, I always check back on it from fp_read). I find it hard to believe that this is as detrimental as it's being made out to be.
I rarely subscribe to threads now. I did post before that fp_read is a large portion of my traffic. But I also use it's consolidated list of new threads from every category (because it's faster, but probably worse, at discovery). You could probably dig my post up from a couple weeks ago, but I doubt anyone really cares enough about this to.
They are probably not going away, but implemented in another style. Only time will tell I guess, since it isn't listed in the Roadmap. Newpunch is progressing really quickly tho, even at its current state I already prefer it over oldpunch.
The moment I discovered the ticker + fp_read, everything changed. I wouldn't want to see them go :(
tbh I only use the ticker when I post something in lmao pics and I want to see the funnies come in. I care about ratings a little bit :)

How many sections of FP do you visit regularly, as a side question related to the fp_read discussion. I think I check... General Discussion, Videos, SH and Polidicks, GGD and Valve Games and Mods. Maybe very rarely I'll check out the Modelling subforum.

Might start checking the GMod section but there's only like two threads I'd want to read there.
I suppose this has already been talked about, but is the new Facepunch planning to allow other ways of authentication? Is Steam an option or are we stuck with Facebook and Google?
Back when Garry was working on oldnewpunch he said steam authentication would come later. I have to imagine that's still the plan.
Is listing who rated what going to be added? or is that intentionally removed?
It'll be back
Man that's a lot of really nice additions. This is really shaping up well.
How would we be able to view level and coin progression on mobile devices? I reccomend that by clicking them you view the progress.
Long quotes get clipped, can expand by clicking on them
I really love this feature + the post shrinking for massive posts. Will make browsing intense debate threads so much easier good god. Throw in making the name part on the quote box a link to the quoted post and shit will be A++
