I dont really see whats wrong with the current gold system in the first place. It could just be a coin upgrade if we really want to keep the coins.
Honestly, community event stuff should be left to likely after the site is launched, the whole concept of earning coins off them is kinda eh and a tad unfair.
well yea that goes without saying for launch time, but how would it be unfair to get coins for taking part in events, with extra coins going to the winners of said events? it seems harmless to me so I don't get why anyone would be against it.
Not everyone will get a chance and while I know you love HL1DM, I personally fucking hate having to play against you with 160ms and other than that, hasn't really been much appeal to do anything else currently, but that can change.
lol i should've just not mentioned hl1dm as an example. again, there would be other stuff on other servers if we wanted to try and pursue something like this. we'd just need to find people to host other shit.
I would also be okay with community events that are not strictly video game related. Art/design/writing/etc. events would be fun too. Or other things that more people on the forum can participate in that may not require a certain “skill level” per se or a prereq like having to own a certain game. More general stuff, I’d be cool with. That way more people can enjoy and have fun with it and get a chance to earn things from it. Again like postal said, these are all just suggestions and ideas. We don’t have much pull right now in deciding what’s gonna happen on newpunch lol.
ok i think the coin system is gross i thought it would be fine but just from hanging out on the new forum for an hour, having this weird competitive system insinuating itself everywhere and pressuring everyone to post just for it's own sake is weird as fuck and totally not my speed

Things like this should be pretty open for the community. Just my two cents on it anyway.

Burre has been shitposting like a fiend on there and has double my post count, but he only has like half my count count not counting awarded coins, probably due to how much time I spend browsing and moderating the rust forum to deal with spammers.
The unfair side is mostly only a very select few will be able to actually participate due to time and even slot constraints for example.
well that's why I'd ~ideally~ get other admins/mods to host things at a variety of times for a variety of games, so you won't have that unfairness. It's just an issue of getting enough people on board really.

Spamming shitposts doesn't gain you coins and levels any faster than posting normally would.

Call me backwards thinking, but I don't like it. Has me worried about shitposting for the sake of it, I shouldn't care as I tend to stick to a few areas of FP unless i'm browsing under the influence but that's not the point. I mean, my content is trash for the most part either than a few select bits. I'd much prefer the pixel dick that grows according to your post count. :v:

It's biasing pure and simple.
I think we just really need to wait and see when it comes to how the presence of coins will affect the posting culture. The current testing grounds isn't really indicative of how it'll be in the final product when everyone's transitioned over. I think the most valid concern is with the scale of coins for rewards. I really like the unique and somewhat iconic at this point 80x160 avatar dimensions, so to see them be a virtually unreachable goal kinda sucks.

I like the design of the new site and all but gosh am i not really excited to have to either play games I don't want to play, make shitty art, or really engage in any of these theoretical events to restore functionality that I've had for almost 4 and a half years now, on top of losing the read threads page (i get that the forum is still under construction but it's not on the roadmap which is why i mention it). I really hope the gain rates are reconsidered, or we get a bigger bonus for being golds on oldpunch. I understand the need to upgrade to new forum software because of the horrifying bloated mess we're currently on but it seems counterproductive to upgrade to something with a downgraded user experience.
Can this thread please be retitled "Forum Discussion v5 - shitposting won't get you more coins" because people do not seem to be listening
Nah just give old gold members 150x150px avatars out of the gate and nobody will complain :eng101:
I think user profiles should show your old FP user name. I haven't gone by Intoxicated Spy since like 2010.
i heard you all (postal/alice/ninja) the first time regarding post count but even just browsing, the coins/levels is just another unwelcome metric on, like, a completely organic social activity that everyone does differently. maybe i'm a little bit bent out of shape from tonsillitis and having to grind our avatars back to normal but i'm at least confident in saying it's not for everyone.
fuck in other news, god damn the avatar progression gets pricey very quickly. already used up my measly 53 coins and i'm only at 69x69
I used my 173 coins and made it to 70x78, barely an improvement
Taste is also a factor, I've grown old and bitter so I only stick to SinglePlayer games now, and I only post here on my downtime when all my effort goes into coherent posts about things I really care about. So yea I don’t really see the harm in also giving them out to people that win shit/participate. The only issue again which I’m starting to think I might be underestimating is we’d probably need a lot of people to host and organize things, especially game events in various time zones, but maybe that doesn’t need to be restricted just to mods/admins
is it possible to migrate multiple accounts? e: guess not
is it possible to migrate multiple accounts?
you can sort of if you have several alts and then donate coins via diamond and coin ratings
I mean yeah if you’re really not interested in playing any MP games or takin part in any FP contests then sure you’d miss out on those coins, but that’s why there’s still other ways to earn coins like by just making gr8 posts. From your post, am I to understand that 'making gr8 posts' means that our only other recourse is to just hope that people will donate coins one at a time, from their own stockpile, in order to get back to where we already are? Or are we just not expected to want to regain our current avatar size within a reasonable timeframe? Alternatively, do regular ratings contribute to our coins in some way? I understand the need to obfuscate coin gain to prevent people posting poorly just to farm coins, but the lack of transparency is causing quite some concern.
also posting in polidicks should cost you 1 coin
I strongly suspect that Garry just straight up didn't do the math on this one and he'll adjust it.
hmm 96 coins for me, how many avatar upgrades is that?
i heard you all (postal/alice/ninja) the first time regarding post count but even just browsing, the coins/levels is just another unwelcome metric on, like, a completely organic social activity that everyone does differently. maybe i'm a little bit bent out of shape from tonsillitis and having to grind our avatars back to normal but i'm at least confident in saying it's not for everyone.
I agree on the coins and levels being pretty weird. people could always be elitist about post count and join date too but by gamifing it it's really encouraging you to care about it I guess I'm biased knowing that if I do want to engage with the system, I've basically been 'demoted' from oldpunch, missing out on gold and 128px long avatar obviously v:v:v [editline]edit[/editline] oh wait there is gold(?)
Currently things we had before are taken away to incentivise gathering of points Can't say I really like that, I would rather have something.... nice. I dunno. But then again this is still testing grounds so my conclusion is... to hoard my coins and to go on like usual
I really love the new forums. They are so snappy.
