Can this thread please be retitled "Forum Discussion v5 - shitposting won't get you more coins" because people do not seem to be listening
I'm always surprised (on any forum) just how many people there are that go to a forum and don't seem to understand that one of the most important focuses of a forum is actually reading what other people are saying.
i heard you all (postal/alice/ninja) the first time regarding post count but even just browsing, the coins/levels is just another unwelcome metric on, like, a completely organic social activity that everyone does differently.
maybe i'm a little bit bent out of shape from tonsillitis and having to grind our avatars back to normal but i'm at least confident in saying it's not for everyone.
The way it's going it seems to be something you can pretty much just totally ignore if you don't like it. The only thing you can currently even do with coins is expanding your available avatar size and levels don't currently do anything at all.
hmm 96 coins for me, how many avatar upgrades is that?
Avatar upgrades start at 1 coin per pixel and each subsequent upgrade increases in price by two coins, this is handled separately for both width and height. Overall it's not very many though. ~120 coins was about enough for me to upgrade my avatar width by a whopping 11px.
i understand where you're coming from. i personally see it as just some extra fun because i don't see avatar sizes as that important in the grand scheme of things and i think it might make people get creative with what they have
this argument was dumb when it was 16x16 pixel art, and its still dumb now. Like I'm all for actually upgrading the forums, and there's a bunch of that newpunch has improved on so far (things like taking you to the newest post when clicking on a thread)!
But I also don't think that should be coming at the expense of some stuff that's pretty standard - like avatar sizes (fp actually has the biggest avatars of the few forums I use, and I appreciate it immensely for that reason! also, not having avatars on mobile is stupid) or an advanced posting screen.

i guess i am just heavily interested in the gamification side from a conceptual point of view, i haven't seen something like this done before and i am excited to see where it goes, you know?
Adding a coin system just reminds me of a shitty mobile game. "Please grind for 27163548 hours to earn enough coins to unlock this feature you had in the game before but we took it away from you so we could do this"
i guess i am just heavily interested in the gamification side from a conceptual point of view, i haven't seen something like this done before and i am excited to see where it goes, you know?
there's enough things gamified in the real world and in games that I don't really get the appeal of this
I got 86 coins for 9 years and almost 9000 posts (1 coin every ~130 days)
I've gotten 3 coins for just randomly checking the site for a split second a few times
There seems to be a bit of a disparity here
feels weird not having a winner rating, what is the most similar, lucky? But that doesn't fit a lot of times I would rate stuff winner

so only about 7300 coins to restore our current avatars, best get grinding :eng101:

Cookie rating, or if it’s a SuPeR winner, then you can give it coin or diamond.
So what is exactly wrong with the system we have in place right now? Small avatar for new members. And large avatars for the members that were here x years with an x amount of posts. Adding this sort of "game" and coins is making it ten times harder then that for like no reason.

There's also no informative rating which would be useful to get back. Apparently it's one of my more used ratings or something.
Avatar upgrades: it’s not a linear price increase like you think, but it is expensive. I don’t want people having full size avatars after a couple of months. Full size avatars should mean you’re a dedicated, long standing member, something that other members aspire to. Not something that you gain after 20 posts.

I'd really REALLY like not being on the receiving end of a Asian MMO disguised as a forum.

To me all these posts say the same thing: I’ve got a big avatar now, let’s keep it like that

Find a new forum then

Approximately how long should it take for someone to get to the current gold member avatar size? It seems like most peoples' issue right now is mostly related to not being able to use their current avatar. Which for some of us is an avatar we've used for years so we'd like to continue using it. (Though in my case I coincidentally had an alternate view of this one which was small enough to use.)

Wouldn't people who have been here since 2005 for example fit that criteria? There wasn't a whole lot of coins to be gained from migrating oldpunch accounts and it seems like the current gold avatar size is far from attainable even for those who have been here since the very start.

It's not time based.

But a lot of people already are long-standing, dedicated members. Just because we're switching to a new infrastructure doesn't really change that. It's still facepunch.

It seems like you get some kind of daily 1 coin login bonus or something (that's my impression having never posted and barely looked at the site and already made 3 coins anyway)? I'm just curious how 10 years translates to only 80 coins (seemingly a few months of activity on the new site?)
[editline]0[/editline]
I mean I could understand if you want this to be kind of a "veterancy reset" but it seems to me like in a very short amount of time those 80 coins will have had little impact on my total avatar size compared to the 130 days each it took to earn them here

But here is the thing though. Many members here have already shown they are dedicated long standing members. And from what migrating accounts has shown. All the time spent on this website only counts for enough coins to get at best an 80x80 avatar.
Oh looks like many people already said the same thing opps. :v:
It's not time based.

you’re a dedicated, long standing member
so which is it then. is it time representative, of someone who has dedicated much time to facepunch, or is it not? all of this just reminds me of ea's "sense of pride and accomplishment " comment.

Oh fuck you got me in a logic trap, fuck this everyone gets a screen sized avatar for free

is a decade not long enough?
hell yeah brother

This makes sense, but the people complaining about this ARE dedicated, long-standing members. Unless you intend for the new forums to be a blank slate, which I think you've established that they aren't.
Here's the thing: I don't care about your stupid self centred arguments about how your avatar is smaller on the new site than it is here. I don't care that you feel like you were short changed when you migrated your account because your 20 years of dedication and 20 million posts only got you 200 meaningless coins.
Everyone is in the same boat. It's all equal. You're not being punished. This is how it is, if you don't like it, stop wasting our bandwidth with your childish drama and get to fuck.

If the coins are meaningless why did you create them as a gamification of an internet forum

it seems like the intent is to have smaller avatars across the board so it's not really fair to compare how long it will take to get 160x80, maybe that's not supposed to be a realistic goal
clearly the amount of coins you get from migrating a 10 year old account with 10k posts is disproportionate to how easily you actually earn coins on newpunch, I think there's valid reasons for this to some degree but the discrepancy seems a little extreme

If this is the case then it'd be helpful if Garry came right out and said as much. People are going to get a bit worked up over it regardless but it'll help a lot more if everyone's at least on the same page here.

A bunch of us here have got 10k+ posts, and that's even after the Fast Threads cull
"To me all these posts say the same thing: I’ve got a big avatar now, let’s keep it like that" - we got slightly bigger avatars by becoming gold members, although the value of the membership itself kinda went down since people can just outright buy in, there's many (me included) who actually had to meet the requirements first :v:
