tbf I think doggy's post was a lot more shitpost than that one. I guess it's hard to quantify shitpost other than "I know it when I see it" so riding the line may be ill advised but I definitely don't call joking about the selection process a shitpost, especially not in comparison to doggy's post
Maybe, but the rule was made so this thread wouldn't become WAYT-like. Both shitposts and overdone jokes fall into non-serious matter. And that's, what Hezzy tried to avoid here.
Funny jokes are not the same as shitposting. These new rules are really easy, stop being confused.
Can we bring back backseat mod bans?
to be fair, what is funny and what is a shitpost is subjective and usually a shitpost is an unfunny joke post from what i can see so i think it's a valid criticism

I don't think those ever went away.
for that matter garry's post had a heavier ring of shitpost about it than nookyava's
Damn, I sure woke up to change here

I wouldn't be so brave to question Garry tbh.

I am.
garry, why isn't your avatar bigger? you should be at least tudd sized
can we use the community fund to donate to hezzy for being a god
you know what'd be cool
that slider shit we used to have where u can donate to moderators and choose how much which moderator gets because i wanna pay mods for their effort but i dont wanna get everyones individual paypal or whatever :(
That sounds just like bribery with extra steps
I mean, you guys do have my badge and gun in a drawer somewhere, you could just dust them off and give them back to me...

Give old mods their gun back and let them go vigilante style on posts anonymously :pudge:
How were mods selected before Hezzy came back? I always thought postal was kinda like default second-in-command so I assumed it was him

One or more of the mods go "hey we could use a new mod in timezone X who tends to hang around forum section Y". Then we hear suggestions from any within the mod team, that are then discussed in mod chat/forum. Followed by an invitation and assignment of a daddy mod who takes care of the new mod for a few months to a year. We still do it this way.
Bring back TH89 and Starpluck, SH got a lot more god damn gboring when I didn't have to be on my toes about using the world "black" or saying Iran maybe isn't great.

we all talked it over, made picks we were all happy with, got approval from garry, got gwilty to sort it out, then picked some of us to babysit them.

Q. Can I become a moderator?
A. We recruit only when we identify a gap in our coverage and we will pick people we think are suitable candidates. If you'd like to be considered, get yourself noticed by contributing positively to the forums. Why not submit a Community Fund Application and show that you're capable of taking on responsibility?
I'd donate, but I'm allergic to giving other people money.
With that said, why does everyone want to become a mod? Is it dickwaving?
Can we make a community fund application to bring back bad reading?

They want the bigger avatar.

Honestly I wanted to see how many people wouldn't recoil at the thought of me coming back, which is surprisingly lower than I expected. As far as the community fund goes, can the "community fund applications" include ideas that don't require any monetary investment? I've got some generalized ideas that might bring the forums together as far as implementation goes, but I didn't see them as suitable to the fund itself.
Or would it be better if there was another thread either in GD or maybe in the community fund subforum for those kinds of contributions? I mean, I've pitched the idea of bringing back respected users, with a special user group with the same avatar permissions as moderators. I've thought about a few different merit based systems for users to vote for either users on their user page or even a post, like a type of rating. Then there's the idea of just having a community recommendation for who fits the bill. You know, for users that have contributed to the forums continuously and sets a positive example for posting, and them being recommended by others lets you know that there's merit to their actions.

I just don't know where suggestions like that really belong. There used to be a suggestions thread, but we got rid of it because most ideas were impossible with the state of the forums. With the new one coming up (eventually) it seems more reasonable to bring it back now more than ever.
I'm genuinely curious but why wasn't VNL demoded years ago?

Seniority is my guess.

What was the original reasoning for its removal anyway? Wasn't it something to do with Gold Member basically encompassing what Respected Member already was?
At any rate I wouldn't be opposed to it. Having Gold Member an incentive for donating and having Respected Member be a merit based user group.
I'm genuinely curious but why wasn't VNL demoded years ago?
There wasn't really any reason to. Like, if Postal or Hezzy suddenly went AFK for a year, I doubt they'd get demodded immediately. VNL is/was trustworthy, professional, an old mod, and I believe also garry's friend. It's not like someone like that would have suddenly ran amok or done a suicidal ban spree on the forums, so nobody really cared about her being inactive.
If a mod is inactive surely it doesnt warrant removal of the status, people have a life outside of here and them being inactive doesnt have any effect on that at all. I never really understood peoples fustrations with mods being inactive, if they are going to be demote I am sure there is something in place to do that but at the right time.

This was back when 95% of the forums were blue members, so being gold in and of itself was pretty rare. That's when the respected user group was introduced, right around custom forums. Respected users were picked to act as examples of how you should act on the forums, and there were 3/4 people in that category. I believe BDA and Pascall were two of them, with Linelor being an odd (and banned) duck out, while I can't remember who else it was. It may have been mufc. When they all got into their new groups, the respected group died since it no longer served a purpose at the time, with gold members being taken more seriously (for a little) for their behavior. When the initial 2/5 years 2000 posts started, the gold population exploded, and as a result the grandeur of being gold lost it's shine, and with it the exclusivity. I can name a handful of people off the top of my head that are more than deserving of being considered a respected user, and I'm sure many of you can name a few yourself as well. It would drum up more inter community dialogue, something that I've missed a lot of in the past years.

It's was two months in my case, but I agree with the fact that she fit into a spot that really didn't need any management, so removing her would have been more effort than it was worth.

well there's also the issue of mod accounts getting hijacked. one particular mod I won't name had been inactive for months when someone took control of his account and went on a ban spree. the hijacker claimed it was a forum exploit and it lead to like days of drama before we finally discovered the mod in question is a schmuck who reuses the same password on here as he does at least also on a site that got compromised. gj fuckwit. same thing happened with the old mod andyvincent (iirc) back in the day who wasn't even using the the mod account anymore really but his account just kept getting hijacked over and over again lmao. no reason to keep a bunch of useless mod accounts laying around when each one is a potential vulnerability b/c VB sux
annnnd then ofc there's the pr3d situation. if they're not interested in modding anymore whose to say they won't just decide to fuck about with the mod account and go out with a bang.
regularly pruning dead mods is a must.

I never considered that to be honest, but that is a fair point. Having an inactive section for mods seems like a good idea for the future I suppose, which can be set back to active when/if they return. The new forums should hopefully combat the hijacking, making complex passwords required or something. I know its a pain for most people but having a password manager is pretty common these days, that should have eradicate that problem.
