Would locking mod functions with a different password after inactivity be a possible/good solution?. You'd set it after being modded and keep it somewhere physically like paper or whatever else.

I forgot that Friends was even a feature on the site.

Putting a password on a piece of paper isnt a good idea, like ever. Two step authenication would be a better idea.
This was back when 95% of the forums were blue members, so being gold in and of itself was pretty rare. That's when the respected user group was introduced, right around custom forums. Respected users were picked to act as examples of how you should act on the forums, and there were 3/4 people in that category. I believe BDA and Pascall were two of them, with Linelor being an odd (and banned) duck out, while I can't remember who else it was. It may have been mufc. When they all got into their new groups, the respected group died since it no longer served a purpose at the time, with gold members being taken more seriously (for a little) for their behavior. When the initial 2/5 years 2000 posts started, the gold population exploded, and as a result the grandeur of being gold lost it's shine, and with it the exclusivity. I can name a handful of people off the top of my head that are more than deserving of being considered a respected user, and I'm sure many of you can name a few yourself as well. It would drum up more inter community dialogue, something that I've missed a lot of in the past years.
That's interesting, I didn't know the respected member category was so limited in number.
Were respected users picked in a fashion similar to mods now back then or was it more along the lines of voting/nominations?
Personally I'd prefer if it was a hand-picked system but I think being able to nominate people and mods deliberating on nominations would work best imo if this system was put into play. That way it wouldn't turn into a big circlejerk via a sub-community voting each of its members to respected status. Then the user group kinda loses its purpose once more.
I moderated a roleplay server that was like this, I stopped moderating it because trying to find my second password and two step auth every time I wanted to play got really annoying.
I dont find it that annoying, it makes me feel good that my account is more secure. Its really not a huge deal anyway, because once you are logged in that would be it until you next logout / close FP. It could also be something that is remembered via IP address, even trusting that browser would do it as well.
GET RID OF THAT FILTHY AVATAR RIGHT NOW
what the fuck
well newnewpunch is already gonna be way more secure since you log in via stuff like gmail or facebook, which already has it's own two step auth built into them. someone has to bypass those restrictions, get the account, and then come to facepunch with it. an extra step tho for accessing mod/admincp would still be nice tho but maybe i'm just still paranoid after how many hijackings we've had here.

I mean like only locking ~1 month after last mod action and still being able to log in normally just gray-out the mod stuff until you give it the password.
Oh yeah, I forgot FP keeps you logged in. If that's the case we should just get two step auth on newnewpunch.
account security is the reason for my alt buttsexv17, I kept that account around in case I was logged in on a public computer and forgot to log out.
also why I haven't used it in years. got a smart phone since I made that one

You can never be too secure I guess, so if you think its needed then it probably is. I am also guessing gmail and facebook arent the only way to login, as in can we still login with our usernames?

NewPunch's login requires you to use OAuth which is currently run through Gmail and Facebook on NewPunch. I imagine Steam will probably also be added at some point in the future (maybe)

Eww...
Call me old fashioned, but I prefer it decentralized and not reliant on third-party services.

Frankly, I'd be happier with my login auth in Google's hands than Facepunch's. Google's reputation for security is sterling.
So mods have a way of tracking alts right?
This is more of a curiosity/waste of time, but how far back does that go, or work altogether , I guess?
I have one alt that I use to log on my WiiU with because I forgot this accounts password and I cant be bothered to log out now, but I had an old, ooooold account from when ratings were tracked on your profile or whatever that was lost to time years ago. Always tried to find it here or there, but no such luck.
I will pay in smiley emojis if a moderator can find it one day tia
Is there any interest in a community thing where once a month people can nominate some posts/posters for making interesting, humorous, etc posts and they could win gift cards for Steam or Amazon or something? Could be different tiers and categories for posts too.
Instead of once a month I'd prefer if we did it for the thread nominations deal we do each year instead if anything.
Granted this will probably be the last one we do on OldPunch, but still.
[editline]Edited: [/editline]
I say this mainly because most "humorous" stuff comes from [LMAO Pics], so usually waiting until the end of the year gives time for the outlandish stuff to crop up. There'll probably wind up being dry spells during months so it won't feel as special.
Garry liked the idea of login-via-email-link, so you'll probably get to use that as well later on.
Can the 125 page cap fuck off I just broke thrift shopping and the last post wasn't even thrift i'm so angry

My understanding is that mods have user IPs visible. Multiple accounts on a single IP is most likely an alt

For storing passwords there really isn't a good reason for a website like this to not use those services.

I just don't trust the ever increasing reliance on social media related services of megacorporations.
And i also generally like various social media accounts distanced as far away as possible from each other in every way possible.
So that makes it automatically a bad idea.
One thing I'm curious about with mod recruitment. Has anyone actively turned down mod status before? And if so, what was their stated reason if any?

start making straw accounts like I did
If people have turned down mod positions it's probably because the time is not right, real life commitments, etc.

Why do we even have a 125 page limit? Didn't it use to be 250?
Why do we even have a 125 page limit? Didn't it use to be 250?
something to do with slowing the entire forum down when there's a bunch of really fat threads.
Why's the main site still one column when fullscreen? Why make people scroll when there's so much empty space in the middle of the screen? What was the reason for switching from two to one column in the first place?

Because Garry wanted one column. I'm not sure he had any reasoning beyond that he liked it better, somebody can feel free to correct me if he did.

It looks better as a single column on mobile, pretty sure that was the entire reasoning yeah.
