I meant PM on the forum.
The mods on the Discord server and here are the same.
Feels a bit overly strict on the instant permaban, in my opinion.
if there's one thing frequenting this thread has shown me, it's that communication between mods is pretty haphazard, and every mod has their own interpretation of rules.
one mod will say one thing, and another will say something that completely contradicts what the other one just said.
Here’s a better explanation.
Here’s what you can’t do:
PM a fp staff member without running it through us mod team and having us ask them first.
Ping a FP staff member under no circumstances on the FP discord.
Here’s what you can do:
PM us(the mod team here or on discord) if it’s actually a decent question and we can run it through Hezzy and set something up with a FP staff member.
That way we can try and get you someone who can answer your question(again must be serious and a good question) and we know who asked and if you have permission.
If you just ask a FP staff member without running it through us then yeah you’re breaking the server guidelines.
Hopefully it’s clear.
be that as it may, the discord rule says "Under no circumstance should you contact Facepunch Staff or Moderators (either by using the @name function or sending them a direct message) without prior permission. If you do this, you will be permanently banned without warning."
which means never mention a mod or staff either in channel or a discord direct message
The rule was put in place to avoid the very overt and consistent harassment by a lot of users who thought it was okay to act that way towards both FP Staff or Forum Moderators and to avoid people pinging for every small thing that could've been resolved by simply asking in the appropriate chats. Moreso the former issue, as it has gone into some really upsetting territory and a lot of staff members were unhappy about it.
I imagine the actual feature is still allowed for any severe issues that crop up which everyone /does/ need to be made aware about, but I'd have to ask Hezzy to confirm that since I don't handle any of the Discord back end features myself.
If it's a rule we need to revisit, then we may be able to, but do remember that yeah we are not always on the same page due to variations in location, schedule, time zones, availability, and the speed at which our chat can sometimes move when multiple people are talking at once. There are going to be things that we'll have to revisit as a group to get back on the same page about.
Just keep in mind that the rule was put in place for a genuine reason. Not just to be mean.
as in the wording should be changed to "Under no circumstance should you contact Facepunch Staff (either by using the @name function or sending them a direct message) without prior permission. If you do this, you will be permanently banned without warning. If you need to contact Facepunch Staff, contact a moderator first either on Discord or the site."

Kiwi failed to mention that this addendum to the rule was just discussed a few hours ago, so there hasn't been time to update things yet. I think only Mezzoko and Hezzy have access to the server guidelines channel.
We'll confirm things once either of them are available.
I can totally understand needing to put such a severe rule out, cause anything less ("Only directly message or mention mods for serious issues") would inevitably cause a tonne of dumbasses who think their issue is super serious to start bugging mods.
And without knowing the context of dingusnin's ban (did he spam mention, did he all mention, was his reason even somewhat valid) makes it kind of a moot point on saying whether the ban was heavy-handed or not. If the reason for his mention / PM stuff was even remotely necessary, I think a perma-ban is a bit gungho.
-snip-
He was kicked the first time even though it should have been a ban, a month later he came back and did the same thing just so he could take a screenshot to pass around any moderator he could contact.
He was under some illusion that I had a requirement to talk to him in a certain way, I don't, fuck off and don't pm me and for sure don't play the victim.

You're not getting unbanned.
yikes!
Well there you go.
Clearly 5 warnings just isn't enough, we should change the rule to at least 10 warnings before a ban
I don't think he's getting the job

Still not working for some reason.

I don't think he was asking for a job.
dude shoulda bounced from the DMs after the first "don't pm me". kinda reminds me of how a youtube comment boils down and it always ends in talking about hitler
I don't think he was asking for a job.
It sure seemed like it.
It sure seemed like it.
I read it wrong, then. seemed like he was interested in joining a company along the same vein as Facepunch, and wanted to know what those sorts of companies look for in prospective hires.
All job applications need to be forwarded directly to Compwhizzi

Hey layla you don't happen to need a Geophysicist in your company?
email garry and maybe he'll make a six part blog post
[editline]12th January 2018[/editline]
correction: blag post
Maybe you should specify in the rules that any job related questions should be addressed to jobs885@facepunch.com? That guy seemed to just be curious about the company.

I mean, it's right on the website. For almost every company you can find a jobs/career section somewhere on the front page so it is basically the first place to look.
That may help some people but it doesn't really seem like this guy was much for reading the rules tho.

Further to this, if you can't be fucked at the least reading the website of the company you are trying to apply at why should you even be considered for a position?
Further to this, if you can't be fucked at the least reading the website of the company you are trying to apply at why should you even be considered for a position?
Every company I've worked for has had a separate email or form for questions related to the company, and one for actual job applications. I can understand somebody having questions before actually applying, or questions about the company itself, and the way that the page is presented makes it look like you're only meant to send job applications to that email.
So maybe the solution is to have like an info@facepunch.com, even if it redirects to jobs885@facepunch.com, at least it would be a place you can direct people who just want to know more?
isn't all the piss and vinegar about unwanted messaging kinda unnecessary when this exists?

On top of that, why would you throw a "NUH UH FUCK YOU!!!" tantrum over it when you could just block the user in question and remove them? All that's going to do is attract bad seeds who will spot your reaction and try to make you mad to get another.
the way Layla handled it was pretty garbage, even when you put yourself in their position and imagine the sheer volume of annoying PMs they must get on Discord.

I used to have all friend requests and messages blocked, but I recently swapped those off because it made it difficult to add/contact people who were chill.
Sometimes it's a little more hassle than it's worth, but it does have its worth.

Layla flat out said not to message them there and they kept pushing it. I personally try to avoid blocking people if I can help it honestly, so Layla may feel the same.
I mean, he should have gotten the message but why would you continue to even respond after the 2nd or 3rd time.
I mean, he should have gotten the message but why would you continue to even respond after the 2nd or 3rd time.
Only Layla would be able to answer that, but I've had times where I get incredibly angry because someone keeps messaging me and I'm in the middle of something.
It could have been a really bad time and them constantly pushing Layla's buttons like that was not helping.
