Can someone explain to me what Fig is and why this is DOA because of Fig? A little out of the loop.
In a nutshell, Fig is a Kickstarter-esque program that Tim Schafer was putting his games on (I think Psychonauts 2?) If you're not in the loop about Schafer, all you need to know is that he is notorious for handling money terribly.
The real controversy about it is that Schafer was putting his games on Fig, while he himself was a board member (and possibly founder?) of Fig.
There were also a lot of things about how Fig had really shady (and I believe virtually non-existent) supporter protection, saying that once you donate money to a project on Fig you can't get it back, and creators on Fig are under absolutely no obligation to actually finish what they're getting supported. Basically creators could take the money and run, and Fig wouldn't do a damn thing about it.
Long story short, Schafer shot Fig's credibility in the foot because a man notorious for being super shady with money (Schafer) was circumventing reputable crowd-funding sites by instead using one that he himself was involved in. People picked up how shady that is, and the reputation hasn't been shaken yet.
Fig gets a bad rep because of Tim Schafer, but apparently it's more flexible for game developers compared to Kickstarter.
Wasteland 3 ran a pretty successful Fig campaign last year, so it's not a dead platform
