Aww, I wan't some rats now, but I already got 2 cats. :smith:
We used to have rats. One of them was an albino with a freakishly white skin and beautiful blue eyes. It watched tv with us every day and it loved to play with it's toys. It died after 3 years because of a tumor ;(
Albino rats have clear (transparent) eyes, and what you see is the color of the tissue behind them. If they weren't reddish then it was probably not an albino, but a truly white rat. These are absolutely beautiful rats and are a great pleasure to come by. You're really fortunate to have had such a beautiful critter, even though she had to depart early. :smith:
I like rats and a lot of people that I know have been getting them lately. I don't think I'm responsible enough to keep them clean regularly, though, I'd just keep putting it off and they'd start to smell. Damn, I'm lazy.
Also keep in mind if you buy a rat at a pet store, most of the time you have no idea how old it is. So you might be buying a rat that's four years old and then you never get to know it for long or properly train it.
I don't really like rats. But now they seem fine.

I asked her how old it was, and she said "Oh, just a couple of weeks". Turned out it was around 13 months old.
I have a hamster :3: [editline]18th January 2011[/editline] I heard that rats are better tho.
aw man, I watched Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy yesterday, rats tried to cut the dude's brains out :-(
I found a drowned rat in our clogged sink one time, I picked the rat up (wearing latex gloves) and gave it to our cat at the backyard, fucker started eating it from the head to down. :v:
The morning after we got my cat, my mom woke up to find my cat holding a dead rat in his mouth and he just placed the dead rat in the floor near the bed and walked away. It was fucking hilarious to hear her scream.
I once had a white pet rat. One day at my grandma's place(she lives on a farm) I caught a wild mouse and brought it home. Then I released it and my rat fucking ate the mouse. All that was left was a puddle of blood and some fur. Thank god it didn't eat me next.

Also is there a fix for rats so they don't chew on everything? I am thinking of maybe getting a rat again but the last one ate holes in EVERYTHING. Clothing, blankets and furniture. Really annoying. And keeping it in a cage is not fun.

Talk about a great way to scare the shit out of guests.
I also remember finding a dead rat when I was like 5. With some sticks I managed to put it in a box, and then went inside to show it to my grandma. She freaked out.
D'awww thread. :3: [editline]18th January 2011[/editline] Too bad I cant get a rat though, I have two kittens. lol
You mean you're supposed to let them walk around freely? Talk about a great way to scare the shit out of guests.
The rat I had was always walking freely. I don't know about other countries, but in latvia almost no one is scared of rats, especially white ones.

We're type of people who find rats VERY disgusting and call an exterminator at the first sight of one because packs of wild ones living in your house CAN cause SERIOUS health issues and possibly cause permanent damage to your home.
Question: What are the advantages of having rats over mice?
Question: What are the advantages of having rats over mice?
Cats find them more enjoyable to eat. (I know this from experience)
Question: What are the advantages of having rats over mice?
Mice are less intelligent, much less interested in humans, and smell much worse. [editline]18th January 2011[/editline]
Also is there a fix for rats so they don't chew on everything? The best way to punish them for chewing is to pick them up, look them in the eyes and say "no chewing" or something of the like. Then put them back in their cage. They will quickly learn that if they want freedom, they can't chew on things. This is a good way to teach them not to do a lot of things actually, since freedom is very important to a rat.
I want a rat now.
Question: What are the advantages of having rats over mice?
Rats are bigger. In the pants.
Well they're certainly not smart enough to keep running when my ferret is ripping their throats out.
Well they're certainly not smart enough to keep running when my ferret is ripping their throats out.
Or my cat.
Or my mouse trap.
Or my mouse trap.
Your mouse trap rips their throats out? WHAT MODEL IS IT?!
Rats are cool, but for some reason i find the huge fat tail disgusting. The reason i had a hamster and not a rat when i was younger.
Bullshit I've had a lot of pissy rabbits that bit for no reason at all except "Hur you think i'm cute and cuddly? BITE"
My rabbit is pretty much the gentlest rabbit in all the lands. :3: Then again I know the breeder they were a mate from where I use to work, so I knew how they were brought up and they get a lot of hand time. It made them really docile.
I hate rats, and rat traps cost way too much. Filthy little things in my opinion.
I have a feeling too many people are mistaking rats for mice in this thread... Anyway, I am on my second set of rats so far. They are probably the most awesome pets you can get. Just the right levels of personality and easiness. Too bad they don't live longer.
