I had a couple of mice a couple of months ago, and now I see that taking care of a mouse is not as different as a rat.
I've been considering whether or not to get another rodent, and now I think a rat would be my first choice
Reminder: This thread is about pet rats, not wild ones.
I had an extremly fat rat, it died. :saddowns:
Rats are cute, but when you see some tiny little thing brushing against you legs all of the sudden, it takes you by surprise.
You're a special guy

You sick fuck:v:
Do you honestly believe he shoots rats with a shotgun? HONESTLY?
Err i do actually :/ , we use the shotguns for Squirells and such as they eat our crops and are fast little buggers, but we also have a small rat problem from time to time, it does the job when they are running at about a million miles an hour.
Too close? not much left really, was the quickest way i've seen to skin a rat though.
I need to get myself a rat they look so fun.
I hate it when people use traps :smith:
It's really not that expensive to buy some humane poison that won't cause the rat to die in immense pain.
Rat traps like that are actually faster, it snaps the neck. Poisons are slow killers. Get your facts straight.

No it is not. This is one of Gods beautiful creatures so stop treating it like shit

The problem with posion is that they eat it and then they run away and die somewhere where you can't get them, like in the walls for example. and then they lay there to rot. smells terrible!
Naked mole rats
I had a rat but its leg got stuck on the cage ceiling and it broke and teared half off and poor thing died in 2 weeks.

People actually use guns to kill rats sometimes? Sounds like a great way to damage your own property.
I've got one of those:

It's a mini mouse, from the Mus Musculus family. Unfortunately google images brought only computer mouses as the search' results :(
I love it, but it seems like he's missing a partner, it's pretty sad to leave him alone for 5-6 hours straight because of my job.
Of course this is not a rat, I know it's a rodent, but it fits this thread as well.
I like ducks more

Adorable :3
You should potty train him and let him run around on your desk while you play games. Since it's a boy, you could probably get away with just letting him sleep on your lap!

How should I go about potty training him? I'd love to have him out without worrying about him making a mess. I have him out now :3
Here's another picture if you'd like it.

Watch him carefully for awhile and whenever he makes a mess, immediately take him back to the cage and lock the door. You can say "no" or "bad" if you want, but don't be excessively loud about it. Remember, he doesn't know any better yet! Leave him in there for 10 minutes or so, and then you can let him out again. Eventually he'll make the connection between freedom and not pooping or peeing. Good news is, he looks very young and will probably make a well-trained adult if you do this early on!
Rats are badass. Except the tailess ones, those are hideous.

That's assuming the rat sticks its head directly into the bait. This is often not the case. A lot of time the rat will suffer crushed organs, broken legs/arms, or other forms of maiming. These types of injuries can take anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour to kill the poor thing. My dad used to put rat traps in the tool shed, and I once found one with her snout completely detached from her face, with blood everywhere and the critter still breathing. It was horrific :ohdear:
Oh heck yes, I love rats. Like, 8 years ago we had our last rats. My brother bought one at first, which died quite early at the age of two or something, due to loneliness and possibly some fatal virus. After that, both my brothers bought two rats, and after them two more. The last one we had though, was mentally insane and used to bite people. I later found out that these insane domestic rats are most often inbreed, which would explain their aggressive behaviour. If you visit a vet with an aggressive rat, they will probably want to put it to eternal sleep.
Well, back on track. That was approximately eight years ago since the last rat. So, the weekend before last, my girlfriend started talking about the idea of getting rats (we live apart), and I got all hyped up. Then I got the idea that we could adopt one rat each, to share the care, so to say.
And this weekend we did. We named them Willy (Wille, William, Willey, Willie - We call him all of them) and Hugo.

They have grown a little since the pictures were taken though, but I haven't managed to get any good ones myself yet.

There are not enough heart ratings in the world.
Now I want a rat. I never realized how cute they could potentially be. I've had hamsters for years. I have had 3 in my life, one died of old age, another of heart failure and another of getting way too fat. I didn't know what to do... I was 10. :(
Rip ... Chewy and Sunflower (first seed she ate when I got her) don't remember the first one, maybe Jessie.
Getting two female rats soon. I'm very excited , ever since I helped trained my buddy's rat, it seems to be all I can think about. Gonna name them Pink ( after Pink Floyd ) and Nancy ( After Sid Vicious' girl ).
Thanks for a very nice thread OP!
