But what if we are already living in one?! The plot thickens! dun dun dunnn
But what if we are already living in one?! The plot thickens! dun dun dunnn
Actually, this is supposedly more likely than you may think. Some important professor figured out that there's something like a sixty percent (probably too high, most likely lower) chance that we're in a virtual reality to begin with. So if we ever make virtual reality, you could be playing a game in a game in a game in which we might all just be machines. It's kind of worrying when you can reasonably doubt everything you see since nobody will ever be able to disprove it. Also, the universe might be a hologram. The moar you know.
Holographic meatloaf
Holographic holograms within virtual realities within virtual realities that might be a dream within a dream within a dream. We need to go deeper!
Our species would die out because we would not reproduce.

If realistic simulations of universes are possible in the first place then it's EXCEEDINGLY more likely that we're in a simulation (or in a nested simulation somewhere down the line) than that we're at the top of the chain inside the 'real' universe.
Was expecting a discussion about this: Virtual realities are more like prison's. They still have a limit to how far you can go, and what you can do.

Of course, we have reasons we're not all dead yet, but how do you know fact from fiction? It makes my head spin to consider all the possibilities.
I think it would be cooler to drop in drop out of virtual reality rather than pick one or the other. But no I like to stay in the real world. Would be useful for people that are dying of long term illnesses and other such things. Plus it only counts if you get laid in real life.
What if there's the option to make you believe the virtual world is the real one?
If I can be in any virtual world I want, be it medieval or sci-fi then hell yes. If my real body could somehow survive without my help, I'd live in a virtual world. I mean why not, it's better than the real one. It would be kinda like a lucid dream. Fucking awesome.
I would like to spend most of my time there since it makes it easier to meet friends and all that

I've been kicking around the idea of reality augmented by virtual simulations... not to much being immersed fully into a virtual reality program, but instead ACTUAL reality being twisted to each individuals liking, to a point. Visual sensors could do anything from remove color leaving the user's view in black and white, putting on colored filters, grainy filters, etc to completely "reskinning" everything we see.. making all the trees on fire for example, or having a heavy rain of cherry blossoms whilst walking, making everyone look like a certain race, etc. Also for sounds... play a constant soundtrack to your life in the back of your head... or just add ambient crickets, cicadas, rain, whatever. Other connections to the body could result in an even more immersive augmented experience... Say you wished it was a windy day.. the visual portion could alter what is seen to make it APPEAR windy (waving trees, etc), and then other connections could alter the touch, to make it feel windy. That's the theory anyways. On the same topic of altering touch, this could work in other cases, too. Low thread count sheets.. alter their feel to be like soft velvet.. a lumpy bed or uncomfortable chain, rewrite the program of how we perceive it. Users could "download" skins (clothes) for themselves, skins for handbags, etc... then other users with the technology would see the objects with their downloaded skins on them. Holographic style date planners/ text messages/ cell phones/ etc could be implemented.. it could be like holding the phone in your hand.. but there's not actually a phone there, just a "picture" of the display that could then be scrolled through. Eventually, I think, each person could literally be interconnected.. like facebook where people sharetheir status updates, simply being in someone's presence could allow a link to be established to "feel" how that person is feeling. If you linked with your waitress who is having a bad day, would you be mean to her? Probably not... The empathy and (hopefully) overall decency of humanity could perhaps evolve to a new level. Without destroying the individual we could exist as a whole through a web of connections directly between each human and their innermost self (whereas currently we need a computer to be the middle man). Full achievement of human instrumentality could be brought forth from this kind of tech Think of the possibilities... The development is probably very far away.. but that's my utopian vision anyway.
-walloftext-
Just so long as it's voluntary, that empathy part would suck majorly.

I have always thought it would be cool if you could go into a virtual reality and have the time be dilated, so you are only in the virtual reality for an hour irl but it feels like months. So you could spend a long time inside that reality. Of course there's probably a plethora of negative things that can go along with that, but I always thought it'd be cool.
Why would I want to live in a fantasy world my entire life? Everything you'd do in it would be ultimately pointless.
So think like most of the sci-fi books, Matrix or Surrogates (But you are transferring your mind inside a virtual network, not inside a robot) In near Future programmers have developed the machine, which allows people to connect to the virtual reality which feels, looks, tastes, sounds and smells like real, but even better. You can eat any possible types of food, create your own cities and houses by just imagining them, fly like superman and know kung-fu. You don't need to wake up to eat or drink, everything is distributed right to you in form of a nutritious porrige. You age slower (Every body functions but the basic ones are temporary frozen). Will you exchange your real life for that Why/Why not? Reposting this thread in GD, because Craptasket have kindly explained me that I should not post thread like this in Mass Debate by banning me for a day
Honestly i'm not that much waiting for this but rather waiting for "proxies", You know robots or androids. Because this is going to bring a whole new aspect to hacking and being an ass. UAVs are prety neat already, But the batteries they use are just too weak. Though it's prety fun to do assholish missions with them, dropping eggs to random places and all that. Anyway, When the androids become popular you can expect to see something like this: I suppose virtual realities could be extremely entertaining aswell. Can't wait to force someone drink cat piss in a SL alike enviroment.
It would be great if it had rules and regulations. If it was total 100% freedom it would be fucking anarchy. Consider that if there was only one network that everyone had to share. The possibility of someone rising to power and fucking everyone up would be massive. Not to mention the fact that someone would certainly find glitches/create hacks, which would fuck it up even more.
Virtual realities are for people too scared to deal with the real world. [editline]26th October 2011[/editline]
It would be great if it had rules and regulations. If it wouldn't be for the shitty batteries i'm sure internet communities would already use UAVs for forming "airforces".
Why would I want to live in a fantasy world my entire life? Everything you'd do in it would be ultimately pointless.
Implying everything in real life isn't ultimately pointless?
Implying everything in real life isn't ultimately pointless?
Well the primary purpose for the virtual realities would probably be a way for people with disabilities to live. I suppose in a dystopia type of situation where the growth of the population is too large the virtual worlds could be used to "expand" the space in our use, Maybe as a permanent solution, maybe not. Lets face the facts, The 3rd world isn't going to stay what it is forever. Even though the "1st world" exploits the 3rd world i see some humanitarian potential in this in a sense. I mean most of the 1st world deaths are caused by accidents, If we're to "convert" most of the population to live through proxies or to live in virtual worlds we're able to live longer even for the sole reason that any accidents which occur, lets say a car accident -does not affect the actual person but rather the proxy, and anything like heart attacks would be noticed immediately, Because this technology is too expensive for anyone to purchase it for personal use. So we're more likely to see "stasis centers" where you sign in, In "utopic" situation i suppose one could work and live in the virtual worlds, Expecially if the 3rd world is doing all the physical work in the world. But honestly i don't see anything like this happening anywhere near in the future, the world is way too chaotic right now for something like this to happen in 10-20 years. It's kind of as if we were talking about colonizing space. We could do it but if things keep going the way they do we're not going to see any development for atleast the next 30 years. However when it does happen i honestly wish it would be ran by companies rather than governments.
Exchange life? No. Eat virtual dinner with Jesus, Abraham Lincoln, and Bruce Lee? Fuck yes.
Thread over.
People would get addicted, it would be like a drug and people would gradually spend less time in their actual lives. But if it was limited to just a game, like Battlefield in virtual reality that would be sweet
It would be cool if you could play Garry's Mod in a virtual reality. Great thing about that is that you'll be able to fuck around in gm_bigcity.
