It would be cool if you could play Garry's Mod in a virtual reality.
Great thing about that is that you'll be able to fuck around in gm_bigcity.
I would love to noclip through some huge city.
Oh god, I just thought of a terrible virtual reality aspect.
VIRTUAL SURPRISE BUTTSECKS!! *dun dun dun*

This, Matrix (and a russian scifi book you probably never heard of) were actually my main inspirations while making this thread
Mostly this, because it explains the problem with losing your "real" life perfectly
jesus christ is it really so hard to just get a life

Yes. Yes it is.

Yeah but the problems which surrogates brought up about not actually living your real life aren't really problems. They're more of a personal identity crisis which can occur without a simulant like in the movie. It's always a personal tragedy and generally is simply mood related, As in you don't feel real doing this.
I mean think about it rationally. You're not "yourself" when you work, you keep up the appearances and you do all sorts of things which do not exactly represent you as-is. Everyone does this, So i for one don't think this should be a problem if technology similiar to the movie's would become available somewhere in the future.
Very small percentage of people are "real" about everything they do, Everyone else just puts their game face on when doing things.
jesus christ is it really so hard to just get a life
If you could do whatever the fuck you wanted whenever you wanted you wouldn't take it? You could be the god of your own universe!
No i'd rather live a real life and deal with it instead of putting myself into something fake.
Are you implying that you would not like to live in a dimension in which everything is negative and positive at the same time causing a simultaneous reverse-singularity resulting in trans-existential destruction?

Well when you put it that way...
You already can play around in your own virtual sandbox through the practice of lucid dreaming. However, it is very unrealistic for your body to maintain such state mechanically or not for an extended period of time.
You already can play around in your own virtual sandbox through the practice of lucid dreaming. However, it is very unrealistic for your body to maintain such state mechanically or not for an extended period of time.
Lucid dreaming does have it's limitations. It's most obvious drawbacks are relative difficulty in first having a lucid dream and then in keeping it going. Then there's the problem of dream control, which not only can be difficult, but can destabilize the dream or even worse: cause you to lose lucidity. Now, let's say all of that goes right; let's say you've gotten into a lucid dream, it's lasting, and you've got dream control down. There's one issue that can never be addressed: what happens in your dreams is limited by what you know. I mean, let's say I get in a lucid dream and decide I want to do acid, but I've never done (nor will I do) acid before, so my brain doesn't really know how to simulate the experience. It can guess, but I can't be sure if it's an accurate representation unless I go out and do acid, which obviously defeats the purpose of the exercise. Virtual reality solves these problems because it not only affords you the flexibility of a lucid dream, but has the advantage of being constructed by relatively objective means. It might be fake, but it's guaranteed to be more accurate than anything your mind could create.
Woah...
I just had a deja-vu
BUT DEJA-VUs ARE ACTUALLY ERRORS IN THE CODE. OH GOD WHAT

Changes in the code, not errors.
Well, if everyone's in the virtual reality, then it's basically just a new reality. It would be more like moving to a different country than living in a computer, except everything's better. Of course, you would still need to have a job and pay to live there. No one would run the life support systems or the servers without being paid.

Heh, maybe this is why we haven't seen any evidence of intelligent alien life, they make a virtual world and become too preoccupied to work on the technology to go to another planet before theirs becomes inhospitable.
Implying everything in real life isn't ultimately pointless?
Life is what you make it.
Exchange life? No.
Eat virtual dinner with Jesus, Abraham Lincoln, and Bruce Lee? Fuck yes.
The many BK chicken fries and whatever else and what else I want to stuff in my face hole. Yes
However I do decide if I want to eat, so don't say I become the next fat guy of the world.
If there were virtual realities like that, people would just spend the rest of their lives in virtual sex programs. Let's just stick to porn.
Speaking of porn, I wonder if it was all deleted for some reason, then I would like to watch the fireworks.

if it could remove me of my god forsaken low bit of autism, then sure.
edit: i'm high functioning.
and I get deja vu's all the fucking time.
It would be great if it had rules and regulations. If it was total 100% freedom it would be fucking anarchy. Consider that if there was only one network that everyone had to share. The possibility of someone rising to power and fucking everyone up would be massive. Not to mention the fact that someone would certainly find glitches/create hacks, which would fuck it up even more.
If Ghost in the Shell taught us anything, people still ended up being fucked over. Live in your own isolated system with virtual people.
Live in your own isolated system with virtual people.
That would get boring after a while. Anyways, I could imagine a VR system requiring updates, which would mean it still would be connected to the internet, or you would need to download onto a physical medium to update it.
Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but having your perception and mind manipulated directly by a computer leads to a whole new type of cybercrimes.
Download virtual worlds from the internet. Medieval fantasy world magic DLC now only $9.99
I wouldnt live in it. I'd use virtual reality like a video game, after all, thats what it would be good for.
If someone is interested in this topic, I recommend Ian M. Banks Book called "Surface Detail", it is a pretty nice book which covers a lot of this topic. Although personally I do not like the book.
I would say nay.
