I got 145% on my chemistry midterm because my professor is a jerk.

Over here, you get what you get. Yes, even if the entire class fails, they don't care, you get <50% and you fail the exam, no questions asked.

I think you mean <50%.
And that works fine in high school, but unfortunately (or fortunately), colleges can't just fail a lot of people. And you can't expect people to all learn the same concept at the same speed, so I, at least, think grade curves are rather fair.

Looks like you're passing maths then.
Good for you, you didn't fail a test. Now do it in real life and with paperwork. I bet you you won't get 145%.

Sadly, you're right. ): I only have a 98 in my chem lab.
Go work for the Fox News pie chart department.
But you can't get more than 100%

1st year of college here, 40% of people failed, they didn't care in the slightest. If you're not willing to study/picked a college out of your reach, it's entirely your fault, i don't see why they need to hold your hand.
And yeah, i do suck at maths =(
I hate chemistry. Got a B in the midterms though.
This reminds me of my computer programming class. 75% of the students are black people that don't care what they do and just slack off. Now the other 25% ( Me and my 2 other friends.) actually do stuff. So when it came time for the midterms we all had the idea that we would get an amazing curve on our test since everyone did nothing in the class. But it turns out it was a state test and we got a regular grades.
I came in expecting a rant thread on how you hated your teacher and how you got a bad grade
I was disappointed
School threads are bad ideas for threads.
Half of facepunch will rage at you, and the other half will just go on about their school.

Nope. ): Sorry. I'm sure everyone else hates him, though.

what terrible people
I wish all my tests were like this...
Fucking love grading curves.
Wait, so the score you get is determined by the scores other people get?
That's retarded.
You'd be surprised how often this happens in College classes.
I haven't read any posts explaining this in hoped that I'll be the first to point this out, but I was under the impression that a grade curve is determined by however many points the highest grade of the pool was short of full credit? If so wouldn't that make it a 4 point curve?
I mean, giving a student higher than the possible maximum credit not only seems to defeat the purpose of the maximum credit goal but also skewes the fuck out of the grading system in my opinion. Anyways, I'm sure you'll enjoy your next report card.
Next time you get one fill in the key box. All others after yours will be graded against yours. :v:

I don't really know. That's not likely, though. If that's how he did it I must have been a statistical outlier, because the average was around 50. It has something to do with standard deviation and %'s, but I don't know how he did it.
Nor do I care. Yay grades.
I personally think grading curves are stupid, they just artificially raise the average scores to make a school look like it's not fucking up.
We have that in my adv. functions class, but since my class is filled with keeners and gifted people I end up doing extremely poorly.
My tests should all be As but since everyone gets slightly higher than me I get pushed down to a B-.
I get higher than people in the other class, but they end up getting A+s since their class is full of retards.
Fucking retarded.
I have one of the highest marks in calculus and chemistry, but one of the lowest marks in functions.

It's called a grading curve.
64% on my midterm :frown:

He probably puked out a normal curve, stuck the average grade out of 100% on it with an arbitrary standard deviation, converted the current grades to that new curve, and voila.
Which reminds me I have statistics assignments to be doing.
So does that count as an actual 1.45 grade where 1.0 is considered the maximum? Or does 1.45 or so become the new maximum?
i got a 52% on my chem final

If 1.45 was the max, he wouldn't have gotten 145%, since 1.45/1.45 is 100%.

Why can't colleges "just fail a lot of people"?
I don't think we have this grading system in Canada (at least, not at my university), but it sounds retarded. Sounds like a way to cater to people who make no effort by lowering the bar for everyone.
My school is in the bottom %5 of illinois. We almost stopped homework completely because our grades are too low.
We're thinking about demanding a couple more pop machines (or atleast getting them restocked faster) in return for good grades (ie if we don't get what we want, then we ALL purposely fail and the teachers get fired. We move to a better school and up our grades.)
The moral of this thread is that if everyone else is dumb then you are smart
