good thinking
I don't get the Toyota joke. Can someone explain plz? ):
The handbrake is the parking brake. Why the fuck let they drive people around who think that the PARKING BRAKE is like the emergency stop on a train or something. How dense can you possibly be. Well of course it locks the rear wheels. Guess why they invented anti-lock brakes? For a longer braking distance? No offense, but jeez...
a handbrake is for use when your primary brakes have failed (wet, worn, or faded from prior heavy braking.) in addition to hill parking. the whole point was to get my car out of the way, not stop before being hit. even if i didnt get out of the way, i would have been rear ended, which is much better than being tboned.
the handbrake IS the emergency brake, friend. locks the rear wheels.
the handbrake is the parking brake, sometimes it will lock them sometimes it wont, you just lucked out. well it locked my wheels. i got drums back there. i was doing about 40.
If you have anti lock brakes they would've done an even better job. Also most handbrakes only apply to the rear axis which often has less mass on it than the front axis due to the motor position. Your handbrake is also not meant to be used while driving, it will wear off faster than anything. Basically you just acted wrong and just had luck.
At the end of the day he made it out alive though even if he couldv'e taken a better course of action.
be glad you got out safely just don't do it again next time :v:
Damn Karbine, nice reflexes!
Read it as "Jesus fucked my handbrake and saved my life."
Read it as "Jesus fucked my handbrake and saved my life."
Oh thank god I thought it was just me.
So I was coming home from grabbing a meal with my grandfather, and we're cruising through a quite wide intersection, when a rather loud car wasn't stopping for the red light. For some reason, I pulled my handbrake and yanked the wheel left. My car skidded sideways, and the red light runner didn't even veer, and we were nearly hit. If I hadn't have yanked it, we would have been t-boned. I don't even remember thinking to do it. I'm still scared shitless.
You've just endured a process called "natural selection". Congratulations, you passed.
That must have looked hella cool. Should've gotten out of the car and put your sunglasses on. Be like "FUUUUUCCCCKKKKKK YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH"
the handbrake IS the emergency brake, friend. locks the rear wheels.
It's there to keep your car stay at one pos when you are parking, not an emergency break. Ever tried braking your car with the handbrakes when you are at 50 km/h? It takes ages until you stop even if you pull the handbrake at max.

Jesus Christ dude.
Spoiler: [sp]The grandfather was in the other car.[/sp] Oh, wait
Good thinking.
Protip: Use the actual brake for emergency stops. If you have ABS, just slam it down as hard as you can (in other words, try to break the brake pedal). If you don't, pump it to prevent locking.
the handbrake IS the emergency brake, friend. locks the rear wheels.
This only applies to rear-wheel drive.
