Someone asked this question in my maths class, My Maths teacher went on about it for about twenty minutes and then concluded that with maths, The chance of the world ending in 2012 is 0.0001%
Guys i have an answer to this question!
nope.

I don't understand why this man got banned. Sure, a plain "Nope." answer is not how you debate, but when the subject is 2012 world's end, there is no other answer but "Nope."
And the world's end wouldn't necessarily mean humanity's end either. It is very likely, but then again only time will tell.

He also stretched the page for no good reason.
Absolutely 100% yes.
Yes.. maybe he should have just said "nope."
That would be an argument, a good one too when it comes down to this subject.
My calender ends on December 31st. So that must be the end of the world.
Mayans just didn't find a need to write calendar past 2012. If I was a calendar writer I wouldn't write them for thousands of years in the future.
2012 is coming real soon and there are no signs of our destruction, so I'd say it's false. And if it's god, why would he destroy us now and not on some more pretty date like 2k or 3k.
Scientists have proven multiple times that the world isn't going to end on December 21st, 2012, just because the Mayan calendar ends on that specific date doesn't technically mean the world is just going to end then and there; like many other people have said, the Mayan Calendar writers probably just stopped writing their calendars at that date.
There's nothing to worry about.

Probably posted before but I'm capped at 64kbps so I can't see shit.
Should explain everything.
Don't forget about the solar maximum.
http://youtu.be/zjF8fk6hjZE?t=32s
One of the largest solar maximums in the history of mankind is supposed to go off right around that time. It has the potential to shut down and possibly even permanently fry every electronic device on the planet. Keep in mind, the dude talking in this video is an extremely well known physicist, not some crackpot saying the world's gonna end.
Essentially, the sun is going to go 'lol EMP' and Fight Club comes true.

That means no Facepunch :suicide:
Anyway, back to the point. The Maya's calendar simply ends on that date, it doesn't mean anything other than their calendar being outdated, like the earlier poster said, they could not even predict the end of their ways of life. On top of that, other civilizations and people could have predicted the same thing. If it wasn't the end of a calendar, it might be believable to an extent, but it's not.
First of all,NO civilisation even MENTIONS end of the world in any calendar,so that is like this:Our calendar ends every year, the mayan ends in 2012,sotheir year is just a shitfuck longer than ours, problem stupid people who believe that world can just "end" in 2012?
They just counted years diffrently. Problem?

Scientists have proven that the world isn't going to end on that date? How do you prove that? Source?

I'm fairly certain he meant that scientists have disproven many theories about December 21st, not that they've proven nothing will happen (which is impossible)

Tell me that's not true.
I believe it's more likely that we die becuase of a troll god destroying everything the day after.
Tell me that's not true.
The solar maximum thing is completely true, but it's impossible to predict exactly when it will happen.
I find it hilarious that people are quick to denounce gods, aliens, myths, and all that crap.
But when some ancient civilization manages to pull a random calendar out of their ass, everybody automatically believes their word as a Word of God.

but they're not the same people
I don't think that they even said that it would end in 2012, i think they just ran out of rock TBH....
Man I wanna see the expression on the faces of those who believe this shit when it's 2012. Priceless.
[editline]6th November 2011[/editline]
I honestly thought the activation of the LHC would do something just because it's science. Seems more believable to me than "maya predict world end in 2012 hurpadurr".
My calendar ends on December 31st. Conclusion- The world will end on December 31st.
I'm fairly certain he meant that scientists have disproven many theories about December 21st, not that they've proven nothing will happen (which is impossible)
Yeah, that's what I meant, I should've been more specific.
Sorry about that.
The solar maximum thing is completely true, but it's impossible to predict exactly when it will happen.
It happens every 11 years, like the video said. Additionally, there's various signs and clues that's more or less showing that it's building up more energy than usual and it's going to fucksplode this time. Whatever half of the world is facing the earth at that point is in trouble. I'm pretty sure even NASA has come out and said that this is true and there's a very good chance of it happening.
Pretty much the only defense against this sort of thing would be EMP shields, and unfortunately almost nothing is actually protected. Not only that, but the smaller/more compact our electronics get, the more sensitive they are to EMPs.
I wouldn't be surprised if the sun ended up killing off a bunch of shit solely because of how small we've gotten stuff, regardless of whether or not it's a very strong solar maximum.
My calendar ends on December 31st. Conclusion- The world will end on December 31st.
Your opinion is wrong.
(i know he's being sarcastic or something, but for the argument's sake)
I had no knowledge of this so called solar maximum. Well, it does prove the mayans had alot of knowledge of the solar system. Anyone here seen the movie The Fountain (yes I know it's fiction)?
Yes, it always happens.

No but I do believe all these small quakes we are getting are going to build up to a big one that should be pretty devastating.
Our world will come to an end in a matter of few billion years.
Yes, it always happens.

The only date on that page I believe is
And no, the only thing that will happen on 2012 is mass suicide, looting, and riots maybe...
(Then the solar maximum which I hope doesn't effect us)
