All my life I've wanted to be an animator, but I never had healthy self-esteem and always thought I was awful at drawing. In 6th grade I gave up on my dream forever and have been living in a funk ever since.
Well god damn it, not any more. Today I sat down with the trial version of Flash and an old bamboo tablet my sister uses for signatures, and I fucking made some shit.

Took about 2hrs from a screencap ref, wanting to speed up though :/ (especially as it's not totally finished either really)
Not sure about getting into detailing the coat more in case it just ends up looking fussy... and I just realised the imbalance on the lighting on his chest...
Is it just me or has he come out a bit like some random hoodie-wearing thug that just happens to have a skull for a face..?

Could do with sharper definition around the skull in particular, and more crisp highlights around his hood and shoulders, devolving into that fuzzy out of focus style you have all over at the moment. You could mess up and desaturate him more towards the bottom of the frame.

Sometimes if you're having trouble opening a jar, you can run some hot water over the lid to expand it and loosen it up a bit, but then afterwards make sure you twist it off with a paper towel or rag because it will be slippery.

Why not exactly? Doing something of that sort would help me in various ways, other than allowing me to force myself to work with a faster production speed (a particular problem for me) doing a large amount of studies on the things I find hardest to draw seems at least to me, beneficial. They are things I tend to avoid drawing or when I do, only in very simplified cartoon context because I find it difficult to get accurate.
I find working with full bodies or actual scenes to be more beneficial. I mean, hand and feet studies help for detailed renders and line work but not so much for scene integration or full body representation imo. I guess it just depends on how you work. I tend to try to draw people based on their overall pose, not individual aspects of their body. I find it brings them together as an entity better than splitting it all up into smaller sections. Individual studies help but 50 is just a ridiculous amount mo
I could nay disagree more. The last couple of days I've drilled eyes some because I was frustrated at how poor I was at them. I've done like 40 sketches over two canvases, and the visible improvement from the first page to the second is just huge.
For integrating your studies you can easily move on to a bigger picture, like including the arm up to the shoulder in your hand practice. In my case I'm going to expand to include mouth/jawline/neck/hairline and so on.
