My final project for Web Design I.
My first real class with web design since high school. Could use some improvement, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out.
First real attempt to use color pencils. Tried to find the most basic thing
So I just make the outlines clean?
and find a better thing to draw
I made a model for shapeways as a test for structural ability and this is how it turned out. It was made in blender.
Turns out the walls need to be ticker as by the left door it has broken a bit during printing.

From this test I can make far more better textured and less likely to break models. This also gave me a good idea for price and size of the material coloured sandstone.
Made this :

I need to practise at traditional color. I do nothing but monochrome things for now. I kinda suck because of my color perception.
People have been using grids for hundreds of years

If it works for you then go ahead and do it. Using a grid might not be a good idea for concept art, for instance, but for other purposes where speed isn't so important and complete accuracy of the subject is, it might come in handy
i keep my reference image at least 3km from my work so that it is as art as possible
i keep my reference image at least 3km from my work so that it is as art as possible
dude fuck that I'd rather take a look at the picture for 5 seconds and then close it or hide it somewhere I can't see and only then I draw
I do the same but in the 4.5-4.7 second range

personally i dislike color pencils, water color pencils are neat once you figure out how to use them
someone suggested I post some stuff here so here's some of my most recent work

technically proficient and stylish as hell. awesome work
are you planning on making a career out of art?

yes, namely art direction in video game design
wish you the best of luck dude
I can't be arsed to paint seriously anymore and only really have been drawing stupid inkbrush shits and half shading them

Are there any ways to get back on painting, or find inspiration?
@ All of those comments, gridding is bad because it's a massive crutch, just like pinning your ref right on top of your drawing surface is a massive crutch.
If your process is copying the lines of the face exactly via the grid, you're losing all of the intuition and understanding of the subject, wherein lies the learning value and artistic value of the piece. Connect the dots is a perfectly apt analogy - you draw lines between points that are already given to you before you start. I'll give a pencil to my four year old niece and she'll do that for you np
Again with the ref, the closer the ref is to your drawing (especially if it's on the same surface) the less intuition it takes to reproduce it perfectly. There's no real eyeballing distance, shape and proportion, no real judgment of whether something is right or not. The lines and shadows are right there under your hand already, you don't have to move your head to see whether a line or tone is right or wrong. You can copy what you see while looking at the ref and at what you're doing at the same time if they're that close. You're cutting back bit by bit on what you achieve and how much you progress as an artist with that piece - it's only a step away from tracing it (or a few centimetres).
There's nothing "wrong" with the above things, but if you ever want to be able to draw from life you'd be better off ditching that approach, sit down in front of a model and you're gonna be as inept as most beginners. Or if you wanna get into some prestigious arts course or something and you have to pass an entry exam without your aids - no chance bruv, make room for the people who can draw
i wish people would reply to my work outside a rating or two :/
Not everyone has something to say, and you sort of have to be in the mood to give feedback, and find the work interesting enough to bother giving feedback in the first place.
Some work is too good to say anything but "that's amazing" so you don't bother, some work may be so bad you don't feel like giving it any attention and some work may be "yeah it's alright" so you can't be arsed.
another Christmas present

You're producing a lot salmon!
Something I've noticed in your work is a tendency to feel muddy and unfinished rather than impressionistic and blocky
In a lot of places using a big soft airbrush will result in bizarre depth of field, like above where the foreground is sort of in focus and the background is sort of in focus, but the whole area in between is out of focus. Plus nothing is sharp. The sharpest areas in the piece should be his sleeve that's catching most of the light from the lantern (this is blurrier than the rest of him which is pretty jarring) and the silhouetted edges of the rocks at the mouth of the cave, which are also blurry and have that flattened out white edge with the soft grey halo around it - doesn't work in my opinion
Definitely getting somewhere though, the old man reads very well if you unfocus your eyes, and the lantern light on his face is perfect.

You know, I only use like two brushes
I think varying that would help a lot. I've downloaded two different packs of brushes, but I haven't bothered using them.
I'll also do some work with depth and shading because yeah
his arm looks pretty jacked up.
Thanks for the pointers bro.
Finally got a shred of motivation together and did some work on this one today

That house isn't miniature and doesn't look flat at all, plus the ship looks awesome keep it up bro
Going places
Thanks gangstizzle
I'm thinking I'll darken the sky some so that it has a decent contrast with the ship
I might just add a bunch of massive ships in the distance to create that darkness though. They can help give it more compositional pointiness too
did a quickie soldier guy

No no no, you've got a very distinct and odd perspective going on that takes a minute to comprehend, don't litter halftone shit in the background like your instinct tells you
Let those clouds do the work, it needs the room to breath
You know what this is my favorite thing of yours, everything else sucks compared to this, the subject is a little mundane but the perspective and composition have the potential to be really breathtaking
