Here's the reference, Is there something I am doing to make it look traced?
Normally you would start by putting some base values in, giant blobs of colour that you eventually whittle down and slowly recolour until you have a finished form. Right now it looks like you're drawing it part by part in a very linear fashion. That CAN work, but it means you dedicate three times as much work towards something that's three times as likely to become disproportional or otherwise wrong. Normally when people trace they can see exactly what they want, so they don't bother putting base values and forms down. That's the similarity. Lastly I'd recommend starting with the human figure. All animals, characters, creatures, and forms relate to it in some way. Starting there and become proficient in figure is essential to almost every other form of character based art. Your colours and values aren't bad, and you're off to a good start, though.

I'll be sure to try the more traditional way next time.
Was bored so I did an ear painting study then turned it into a design study!
id like too see a text up in the upper right hand of a frame also did this for an alien creature study im doing for my cambridge coursework. one of many photostudy sketch things which ill eventually upload all of my progress here. also going to be experimenting with alot of different styles so its pretty neat

[editline]30th January 2013[/editline] quick heads i think the thug's got the most personality of all heads
I like the last one the most, but it's not really attracting the viewer to read the word. The first one is nice but the text breaking bottom and connecting with the white space is distracting. Maybe if it wasnt over a white background? (as if it were printed and posted on a wall)

I'm gonna try to do heaps of paintings this week, but I'm not going to show them for a long while. I realised that all I do once I've uploaded an image is keep thinking about how it's doing; how many likes or favourites or artistic ratings it's gotten, which doesn't feel right. So I'm gonna go a few days without worrying about how the painting is going to be received by other people and just focus on how I'm receiving it, I think
