This page started off pretty well but took a sharp turn for the worse Pretty rough little landscape to practice colours.. Trying to figure out colours for something like this was pretty tricky I found. Anyone got any advice other than do more landscapes?
I like it! I'd have pushed the hue slightly more blue towards the horizon, and likely lightened those cliffs in the foreground a little, giving them a more blue tint; always remember that on a blue-sky day, the ambient light will be blue so anything that's exposed to the sky and not being hit by the sun itself will have a bit of blue thrown in
Eh.. I think the coloring is fine. The bushes in the foreground is a bit rough to look at, though. [editline]3rd February 2013[/editline]
I like it! Notice the rocks near the foreground. But yeah, a bit more blue to the mountains would add more depth into the painting. I also noticed that the contrast of the distant mountains are waayy less than the hills/rocks. This could be Mako's way of showing the depth, instead of adding color tints.

I'd also consider the green bounced light from the grass near the foot of the cliffs as well. That's what I think really took my paintings from bad to better - brightening up those non-sunlight faces with some blue. I'd also throw in some browns on the grass just to break it up a little bit in places. Don't overthink it; work quickly on a new layer and just scrap whatever you don't like once you've painted
Cleaned it up some more. I might completely render it later. Anybody have a guess for who it is? [editline]2nd February 2013[/editline] Oh and if you have a deviantart account, add me and I'll add you. I like keeping up to date on peoples' arts.
Cheers for the feedback guys That rocky face in the foreground was probably the thing I found the hardest, and the bushes as well.. You can tell because both areas look awful :v: Judging colours in deep shadow is a bit beyond me right now I think. If anyone remembers that fruit study I did, I didn't find that too difficult, the colours seemed simpler to find. Bright greens and oranges and whatever. Rocks with various direct and ambient light are a lot more subtle. I'll remember to echo the sky tones a bit in shadowed areas next time, cheers for the tip Mal
This could be Mako's way of showing the depth, instead of adding color tints.
You give me too much credit mate I don't have a way of doing anything :v: [editline]3rd February 2013[/editline] Those bushes should have several colours to each clump, I have really no idea how to suggest something so complex nicely and impressionistically. And obviously going in with a tiny brush and spending more time on that bit of foreground than the whole rest of the it was out of the question. At sea

Sometimes to do the sort of thing you want to do, I'll get a solid brush, pick a colour, do some really short, quick strokes in the area, quickly pick another colour and do the same, then another colour and do the same. Don't think much at all about the colours your picking; just keep them within the green to brown range. Obviously each to his own; using textured brushes can help with this sort of thing too, or setting up a scatter brush [editline]3rd February 2013[/editline] Wow the colours on that are actually shocking; don't use it as too much of an example I just glanced at your thumbnail as I opened the page; it's looking great!
I make stencils, and have done some tagging, and I do a lot of sticker pieces. What do you need to know?
Never mind. Some guy in the govnt. saw my paintings and offered me to graffiti an ugly underpass, but in the end I thanked no.

"Balon~" That was awesome.

Witch hunter guy. Or at least it's meant to be so.
I use the Paint Tool SAI oil brush on a single layer. I've got Blending, Dilution and Persistence around 50.
I said it on the prior page, but it might have gotten lost in the posts.
You've got good follow through and arcs, but you might like this for future reference: http://www.silmanjamespress.com/shop/pc/Character-Animation-Crash-Course-p3406.htm It's cheaper and shorter than Illusion of Life.
Been looking for a good animation textbook; if Brad Bird endorses it it's well worth my money. Thanks for sharing!
It's so straight forward and relevant. It's actually required for my classes. I love it.
idk why but this is nice http://www.ebay.ca/itm/painting?item=251222803360&cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D2%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D5341238524132032760#ht_500wt_1288
Been looking for a good animation textbook; if Brad Bird endorses it it's well worth my money. Thanks for sharing!
I recommend The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams (comes with a 14DVD seminar and demos) and Disney's Illusion Of Life. The 2 animator must-haves, pretty much.
I have both of those too, I just posted a cheaper option. They're all awesome.
I said it on the prior page, but it might have gotten lost in the posts.
That's what I love about Sai; when you use a low opacity brush, it actually blends colours together realistically, so you don't have to worry about muddiness when you're using colours just slightly apart on the hue wheel
Working on an assignment for colour/design class. Ref image If anyone's got tips on how to make metallic objects more realistic in gouache I'm all ears.
Higher contrasts will make them seem more reflective and therefor metallic. Is gouache like oils btw? I understand they're opaque watercolors basically, that sort of apply like oils?

And I agree with Lilyo, high contrast and look for where the light bounces.

Can you enable transfer or tilt in CS4? E: It's the "other dynamics" for transfer isn't it? Why is this happening for bigger brushes though? E: Opps figured it out, flow was on too.
