haha noo it's fine; any criticism is useful for future stuff, I just don't think I'll be making any more alterations to this piece (or at least, if I do I won't post them here). Go crazy!

By the way how do you approach colours? Like when/how do you decide what colours to use?
That's how the old design is. I wanted to make the eyes more expressive and still keep the glasses in the new design which is why put them like that.

I have a lot of trouble with it. Often it takes a little while to get into it. Especially when it's something like metal in a sci-fi scene - how do you pick a colour for that? Or rocks - they seem to be either reddish, or really pale and therefore really affected by the colour of light that's hitting them. Or really dark, and not affected by light much at all.
References are something I should use a lot more, and its only when I get frustrated and fed up with an image like the last one I posted that I realise I could have googled some photos to get information about colours and shapes.
I just think about light really. If it's a clear day, then anything that's being hit by sunlight will take on a warmer colour, and anything that's in shadow and 'exposed' to the sky (the side of a tall building, for instance) will take on a bluer colour.
When something is in shadow but not exposed to the blue sky, often I'm just thinking about how light will bounce off a nearby object. Imagine a a tall, slim canyon in red rock, the walls only a few meters apart, and one side of it gets some sunlight and the other side is just in shadow. I'd paint the side in shadow as a darker but quite saturated red/brown, because it's being lit primarily by the light bouncing off the opposite canyon wall.
Getting the appropriate colour for an object in light/shadow is tricky, and often just trial and error. I've found that if you've got a really warm, bright colour, and you want to get a cooler tone for one of its surfaces in shadow, then you can sometimes desaturate it a bit - it turns out that a grey put next to a blue will appear reddish. But you have to keep an eye on it all to make sure it's not looking unnecessarily dull/desaturated.
Often if I need a colour for something that's more in the sunlight, I'll pull the colour wheel towards yellow/red, and if I need a colour for something that's in shadow (on a clear day) I'll pull the colour wheel towards blue and change the saturation/value as needed. Which way around the wheel I go is sometimes a tricky thing, and sometimes it's all just a case of trial and error. I'm also realising that sometimes it's not just a small increment that you need - sometimes one face of a thing can have the hue slider in orange, and another face can have it in blue/green. It's just about putting down strokes until you get the colour that looks right.
I found that in that image of the ship on a landing platform, I had to paint a big sphere and paint how it would look lit up using the lights in that scene; the red sunset to the left and the ambient light from the right/above. That helped a lot, and if I can I'll pull out the video footage of that.
To prevent an image from becoming monotone in terms of hue, I'm starting to find that different temperature lights are pretty much a necessity. I started to make the temperature difference noticeably different, and I think that's what gave a noticeable increase in quality a couple of months ago. Also recognising that the side of a building (for instance) that's not in direct sunlight will almost never be really dark - it's going to be lit by ambient light from the sky.
I'm not sure how to tackle overcast or sunset scenes just yet, which is why most of my stuff recently has had blue skies. I'm sure if I look at some references (both photographs and other artist's works) I'll get a sense of how to do it. Which is something I hadn't thought of much before now!
Thanks mate for getting me to explain this; it's helped me to understand some things a lot better too!
I could do a 1:1 speed recording of myself painting something if that would help in any way?

Alright so since you all absolutely hated the redesigns I'll just work on drawing the original designs in a more appealing way.
I was practicing drawing poses with good lines of action and I kind of liked this one so I finished it off

I like it!
Critique;
The colours are too desaturated and 'dirty', especially around the sun; a lot of the brilliance of the sunset is lost because the colours are either too dark, too dull (that band of cloud near the horizon, the area immediately behind the sun, etc) or the wrong colour (bright yellow for the edges of the sun). There's also a lack of contrasting hues, which makes things a bit monotone in the foreground. The mountains wouldn't really appear to receive any light in a realistic situation, as the light from the sun would simply make it a silhouette.
Sunsets are hard for me to paint because it's tough to get interesting colours happening because a lot of the light bouncing around is just orange. It might help to add cold lights in the foreground or add white light shining through a blue cloth/lampshade/awning to give some nicely contrasting tones. If you're working in fantasy/sci fi then you're in luck; you can just throw in some futuristic blue glowies or some magical blue fire.
I like the purples and whatnot in the midground though!

the drawing itself it kind of off but this was mostly for playing around with color
Maybe taper your lines a bit more, like around the wrists where there's a gap the cutting off is very abrupt
Also leaving a similar gap in her jawline beneath her ear would be nice
Could you go into the value issue a little bit if you have time?
Well, the matter is that a lot of things on your drawings often don't have distinguishable shapes and volume because of the fact that the values and colours of the different sides are quite similar. I mean, the contrasts are the cool way to make something look volumetric.
And the other thing about your pieces is that your objects often look "plastic". Partly it's because of the values, but mostly the reason is that your anges are always so smooth. Try to distinguish them with a bit more strong thin highlights sometimes, when the material or shape is appropriate (metal, sharp edges etc). It will make the object look sharper and more..consistent, I guess.
Concerning colours, I'm not keen with them, but drawing metals is quite easy. They are all about contrasts, actually. You choose the colours the same way as for everything else (except the chrome, which obviously inherits the colours of the environment), but the trick here is that highlights on metals can easily adjoin with dark areas, and that's really cool and beautiful, because it allows you to make picture more contrast by placing cold and warm colours together. Oh yeah, and don't forget the metal's wonderful sharp edges which benefit to the contast too.
Oh hey, Loomis talks about deviantart
