Try angling your pencil more horizontally and building up tone rather than vaguely contour-based scribbling. Just try a sphere or something else cliche first, shade it lightly and then slowly deepen the shadow with the flat edge of your pencil and slight variations in pressure and grip, until the darkest area is black (the highlight being white)

Seconded. I simply love that texture your paper has, J. F.
where did you study? I absolutely love your stuff
Thanks! Your comment means a lot to me! I didn't study anywhere in particular, but I can tell you a short history of how I learned: Was doodling for my whole life, seasonally. This was my proudest work of 2008, average was much uglier. Somewhere in 2009 I stopped completely and doodled rarely from time to time when I wanted to pull something out of my imagination to show friends/family. This summer I noticed an art class in my town and signed up to really learn stuff. Drew a thing on top of my skills to show my future teacher what to expect from me. It was fun at first with cookies and tea but I became frustrated when I needed to draw some boring stuff like naturmort. I want do draw spaceships and technology and stuff! Give me that! Teacher said that like a Musician needs to learn scales, artist needs to learn naturmorts and other 'boring stuff' first. I said (in my mind) Bitch, I've been playing my guitar for 2 years and don't even know what a scale is. So I signed out of art class after few lessons because I feared that I can injure someone with my sharp edges. Continued to draw from imagination and noticed that my drawings don't look like real life (no shit). I can't remember what caused this but something happened, I lost all my edges and ~1 month ago began to study hard, from real life, like my teacher said, learned a lot of useful stuff. I even learned basic music theory, all the notes, scales, reading notes, and now can make awesome improvisations, yay! With all that I've drawn about 0-1 times a week, but a couple of days ago I started doing it daily and Learned a ton of new stuff with each picture. As example, with this I learned that I should make a detailed thumbnail before drawing (you can't just undo bad placement on paper like in Photoshop) and include every little detail in lineart stage to only load my brain with values and textures while shading and not with objects and placements. I also learned that I should do a shaded thumbnail to get my values straight before 'guessing' them in final picture. tl;dr: Do your studies, take them seriously but choose a subject you enjoy. Learning should be hard AND fun but NOT frustrating. When you draw from your head, open pictures with objects that are similar to objects in your picture, still counts as study. I want to include this old gem in my post because I think it's fucking hilarious: [sp]still haven't drawn a single naturmort[/sp] [editline]13th February 2013[/editline]
What kind of paper are you using?
this thing [img_thumb]http://puu.sh/21Sq8[/img_thumb]

The face that you learned by yourself motivates me a lot. You should probably tell the teacher that they were both right and wrong and show some pictures
also when you're just starting out, accept that you're going to suck shit for quite a while
Thanks for advice a lot! The face that you learned by yourself motivates me a lot. You should probably tell the teacher that they were both right and wrong and show some pictures
I did recently, he liked it. And he wasn't wrong. He said it right there: "I would never teach anyone outside these doors [art class], but if you come here means you ask me to teach you. If you don't agree with something, go somewhere else, I will take no offence because not one teaching method fits with every student" Also he worked as a bodyguard in 90's USSR and has his own fucking fight club. Badass.
Treat it like a big mirror on the floor.
On the reference pic it was moving and stuff, I had no idea how to represent it.
On the reference pic it was moving and stuff, I had no idea how to represent it.
Exactly like it looks. Simplify it to about 3 shades - white gray and black, and draw exactly the forms and shapes you see in that water.
14 of February tomorrow, so i made this;
On the reference pic it was moving and stuff, I had no idea how to represent it.
It's easy to let still water sit, but to make a more accurate representation of water, add gradients.Normally, the water is darker towards the shore, reflecting the shore and being in the shadow of it, revealing the dark bed below the water. Also, adding some highlights at the water's edge and on a few ripples can help. Here's an example (not mine):

Currently doing an artsy fartsy unit on my architecture course where we have to draw a model relating to the atmosphere of a poem. Bit pretentious for my liking but I think I'm coming up with some fun results.
