artists can say if someone's criticism is fair or unfair lol never change, da
That's a good thing though I remember posting some fiction a while back and a member was berating me for arguing with the constructive criticism I was getting. Of course you shouldn't accept all constructive criticism as true! Blindly following somebody's advice is just stupid. For one you can't say for sure who these people are or what experience they've got. Some people don't know what they're talking about; other people have ideals or theories regarding art that don't match your own. Questioning the information you're getting and discarding what doesn't fit is important.
Well fair can be a little ambiguous, sometimes it can just mean like, between "yeh" and "neh." As in, "fair point I guess." Iunno, could be worse.
The Body Listen, it's me, your oldest friend, I have a confession to make. It's not so bad but hear me out and so spare me the ache of hanging this simple guilty truth on wire around my neck. So give us your ear and don't you fear, it'll only take a sec. Remember back when we were young, we'd head up to the park, for Dad to push us on the swing, we'd swing till it went dark. In spring the swallows would sweep and swoop in loops around our knees, and as the light fell from the East we'd cut home through the trees. Swinging and swings are funny things, you can't quite fix the thrill. Is it the danger? Is it the motion? But I know I feel it still. Things today are fun for reasons you really can't understand. There's more sides to life than grains to find in a beach's wealth of sand. You mused to swing's a control based thing, about the act of letting go. Someone else has all the power, and even though you know that in just two ticks you'll have your feet back firmly on the ground, there in the moment all you know is the world's going round and round. Those childish days are long gone now. Things have changed it seems. I grew some hair in a few odd places, and you had those vivid dreams where you're swinging again, but not quite like you've ever swung before; and though you know they can't be good, you know you long for more. So I reached into your slender wrists and I found what I was after, and lifted you by those rough red ropes and strung you from the rafter. So now all day you swing and swing, and at night you're swinging too, but don't be scared, sweet mind of mine, 'cause I'll swing here with you.
This evening, I wrote a poem. I think it went alright. Thoughts/comments/interpretations? (I did try and put like a 'deeper meaning' into it but it's hard to tell how clear things like that are)
This might sound weird, but you guys know how when you take a picture of something vertical planes near the lens edges will look slanted because the camera is focusing on one point? That doesn't happen with real life observations right? Idk why this is bothering me so much lately. If I'm drawing from a photograph should I ignore that effect and just draw the lines straight down?

You mean distorted by the lens so that the image 'bulges' a little in the middle and all vertical/horizontal lines have a little bit of curve to them?
I mean Can someone explain and compare this to a real life observation?

Notice first how the reception desk in the center seems further away in the first but they're both at the same spot in the frame. Then look at the message board on the left edge, how you can't see the closer one in the second. A wide angle is going to distort the vanishing point and fuck with you but in a very subtle way. If you can find the original source of that image you can read the exif data to find the focal length. A human eye is ~50mm (or ~80-85 on a crop sensor dslr) so this image would likely be 35mm or something in that range. Either way, it's the wide angle bro. Careful for telephoto too, it has to opposite effect and is sometimes even harder to visualize.
So would the first picture be how you see it normally?
So would the first picture be how you see it normally?
Yeah, it might still be a wee bit wide but it's certainly closer. I'll see if I can find a good reference on focal lengths for you. edit: oh my fucking god i'm crying this website demonstrating an iPhone wide angle kit is using the same location!! (this isn't sarcastic, that's genuinely a freak coincidence and it's hilarious) http://lifeinlofi.com/2011/12/13/holiday-gift-guide-give-or-get-the-gift-of-lenses-ipro-lens-system/ edit: Grand Central Station? (I did try and put like a 'deeper meaning' into it but it's hard to tell how clear things like that are)
[sp]Was the person the narrator is addressing to committing suicide? I may just be thinking overly-morbid, but the "So now all day you swing and swing, and at night you're swinging too, but don't be scared, sweet mind of mine, 'cause I'll swing here with you." sounds like he hung himself and no one will find him, so he swings on the noose all day and all night. I'm also getting that because the narrator talked about how great life was as a kid and how depressing it is as an adult. I'm trying to think who the narrator is though, I have no idea, unless it's Death or something.[/sp]
I also think that MakoSkyDub was pretty harsh and non-constructive.
Nah, It's O.K.
I encourage every one to tell anything that looks wrong to the eye, in response to any pictures posted here by anyone, even if you can't explain why. It will help a lot.
Artist should take into consideration everything people say about their art, even though it's not possible to satisfy everyone with it. Eltro didn't like the outline, me and my steam friends love it (makes it stand out and adds a clean cell shaded look), but I tried looking at it from his perspective to try to make it less ruining experience for him if I do the line again in the future. Although if Mako said what he did like that would help too.
Been reading a bunch of Loomis recently. I'm working on my heads. The main difficulty I'm having is getting the circumference lines that you use to divide the sphere into quarters and eights to relate to one another properly. I imagine that with practice it'll get better, but am I supposed to be doing even more pre-construction in plotting my beginning head-sphere, or is it enough to simply draw a circle then draw the circumference lines on the surface to turn it into a sphere?
I personally just draw and practice.Try to do as many angles as you can.

Got a weird nose but fuck that is intense, nice. Edit: More specifically be a little more conservative with line weight on the upper bridge I think, when the nose is too pronounced (especially the upper portion) it looks quite wonky.

I didn't say what I liked only because I'm not into the piece really, sorry. All of the areas outside of the central structure are, as I said, lazy looking and a bit scrubbed in places. The lighting doesn't really seem to match either and looks a bit vignetted for some reason. The structure itself is ok, but I think I speak for most (artistic) people when I say I don't care for that cell shaded look you're talking about. That said, if there were uniform outlines throughout rather than just on the structure it would have looked alright through consistency at least. I still would have told you to think about line weight next time
WIP of a piece of concept art for my newest animation. indeed I am! You can view the completed film at THIS LINK. (cant embed vimeo links cause they autoplay and annoy everybody) I'm gonna make a thread in GD with the film and the concept art, animatics, making of etc as we've just recently taken the password off it.
