Anti-depressants, drinking, having paranoia, sleeping pills, all of those are not very good things, and have very bad side effects (drinking is a slight exception, although as you stated, drinking alot is bad) but having even 2 of those combined will fuck anyones shit up. Your dad has them all, that's a big big problem and it's urgent you take care of this yourself. This isn't the normal rate-me-funny reply. You need to man up now.. don't put it off.

If you can't convince your dad to go and see a psychiatrist then try and book one to do a house call. It may be expensive but at least your dad will be able to see someone.

Personally I'd say pills and sedatives aren't the way to making your Dad better, they might be a temporary solution but they're not going to make his problems go away permanently. Get him professional help, somebody who'll understand and empathise. He needs support and somebody to be there for him. I've had friends before who've been through the mental health system in the UK who've come out worse for being put on cocktails of pills and just ended up zombies only to be taken off, go through a traumatic withdrawl and end up at step one all over again. Trust me here man, he needs somebody who'll help him through his problems, not around them.

I hope that the OP is actually listening to what all of the real answer's that people are giving. Drinking + Anti Depressants are a horrible combination. You always hear people committing suicide that way. Seriously, call someone to help him now.

Cheers for the advice, it's just me and him living at home now and i've never been close really but i'm starting to really worry about him. He spent the last 30 years of his life building all this up and in his eyes now it's all gone. Gonna have a chat with him tonight about drinking and if he still refuses i'm gonna have to hide all the alcohol.

I'd keep him away from anything sharp or things he could use as a weapon, which is just about everything.

Maybe you could try to take him away from home for a few hours, go fishing or a walk in the woods. This could help making him think a bit more positive and maybe put his mind on something else.
