• Driving in the snow 101 - how not to drive like an idiot

Driving in the snow is the most fun you'll have driving without taking your car to a track. Took my station wagon to the parking lots last winter when we had a blizzard and flung it around like there was no tomorrow. There's nothing more fun.
ABS is good because it retains your control of the car even if you panic and slam the brakes. It is, however, not an acceptable compensation for snow driving skills or plain common sense. When driving schools teach us driving in inadequate road conditions, we do it primarily with ABS off.
We don't drive manual cars.
drive in reverse everywhere. Use the foot brake AND the emergency brake together, double braking power
Winter tires help.
We don't drive manual cars.
Haha, that's because it requires some brain activity to drive a car with manual gear
I wish I could still drive my motorbike :saddowns:
Do it :smug:
I'll love driving my Mercedes e type in the snow, only problem i have is a broken windshield and a fucked clutch nvm the clutch just went to hell, wont be much more funny driving in the snow anymore.
Should also note that 4WD does not mean you're invincible to snow and ice. It is all about the driver.
4WD helps a lot though. But I would have to say, good tires and clearance are the most useful
Snow button 1 and 2 ftw :smug: .

I hit a guard rail :buddy:
too bad its currently 83 degrees where i live :( [editline]21st December 2010[/editline] oh fuck its 86
Fuck ya'll. I drive like a maniac in snow and I do fine. I consistently do 55-60mph on sheets of ice. As long as you're going in a straight line it's fine.
Also, if you want to pass someone in a snow storm, do it where you can see the edge of the road, unlike this poor sap... (I too am from Wisconsin, and most of us know how to drive). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3QoT59sGIs

Fuck around in the snow on your own time, not when there's traffic around.
Here in Boston, the snow is nothing. People will speed and cut you off just like always.
As much as these tips are nice using the parking brake and too-fast speeds on an icy road = lots of fun. Obviously in areas where you can't get hurt, but once I drifted in a parking lot and and the end I was perfectly aligned with a parking spot. It was nice.
oh my god driving in first gear is super fun and scary on the ice. somebody fix my clutch now.
If your not on the main roads, be VERY careful going around turns. I learned that the hard way. I was driving along at about 20 mph, took a turn, and lost control half-way through the turn and hit my front right tire right on the curb (sort of like the drivers in the second video). Fortunately, all it did was bend the rim, so it wasn't terribly bad to replace, but it could have been a lot worse (at least the steering was okay, and it was drivable until I could get it replaced). There was barely any snow on the intersection, but apparently it froze overnight and our street had not been salted yet. They still haven't salted our street and that was about 3 weeks ago. Now I'm deathly afraid the make the turn faster than 5 mph.
Can I prevent all this by just going 20MPH or lower ALL THE TIME?
I hear watching the fast and the furious 3 will help you in the snow
That's what ABS is for.
I was going 15mph on a normal road, slowing down when all of a sudden the lady in front of me came to an abrupt halt, the roads are barely wet at best and my brakes lock up causing a superficial rear-end...
Can I prevent all this by just going 20MPH or lower ALL THE TIME?
Technically. But only do it when the road conditions are really bad. Or else you'll be one of those assholes that are TOO careful, and hold up traffic for no reason.
I hate people who drive slower than worms just because there's ice on the road :argh:
I love watching the shitty rear-wheel drive cars go unintentionally sideways down roads near my house.
I hate people who drive slower than worms just because there's ice on the road :argh:
Yeah, fuck them for being careful! :argh:
Can I prevent all this by just going 20MPH or lower ALL THE TIME?
i slid into a snowbank while going 15 while turning because the road was pure ice
I love watching the shitty rear-wheel drive cars go unintentionally sideways down roads near my house.
I once saw a RWD Cadillac (I believe it was a DTS?) get pushed up a hill by a FWD Ford Taurus. Dat pushing power.
Subaru's with their AWD are really good for all around shit. Rain, Snow, and Slush, you won't forget to turn on the 4WD, since its always on.
