PSA: Don't buy your dog from a commercial pet store. Also involved: puppy mills.

There's a puppy store around here thats actually good. Its a small business, and they let the puppies out of their cages often to play with people. The people there genuinely care too.
All of the dogs and cats I've ever had have been adoptions, except one cat that we saved from the wild.
Certain stores (mass stores eg petwold) are usually very bad places to buy animals from, but an independant animal shop that takes care of dogs are okay usually, breeding is the way to go, coming from someone who has an uncle for a breeder.
We used to have a dog, can't remember the mix but it was one of the 'new' ones and they were pretty expensive to get, who we picked up from an Amish puppy mill. Good dog, healthy as a horse. We eventually got rid of him though because we just didn't have the time for him. He went to a good home though.
It's sad that the only way to finally put an end to the puppy mills is to stop purchasing the puppies, which unfortunately means that many dogs will never find a home and lose their lives.
i found my cat in an old barn
her name is patches and she never grew an inch past 2 feet with her tail

Petsmart too. They're a large corporation trying to get your money. Like hell they care about the dogs. They say they take care of the dogs, but end up not giving them sufficient care.
And small breeders are great. I had a Shetland collie, and she was a beautiful dog. Lived to about 14 and started to have seizures. I cried and didn't buy another dog for 15 years after that. She was intensely loyal and very smart. I loved that dog.
I purchased my dog from a woman who goes around buying dogs that are nearing the euthanization date, she pays for them to be spayed/neutered, and their shots.
I got my dog from a breeder first hand. He only had one dog of course so it wasn't a puppy mill. Then we started breeding our dog. She's had 2 litters and wont have any more. The puppies from individual breeders are more expensive, but it's worth the cost definitely.
They really should do more to investigate this sort of thing if high profile commercial pet stores can get away with it. The issue with puppy mills isn't going to solve itself.
I got my dog from a bin.
The one dog I got from a pet store was a Golden Retriever puppy. He was in great shape for a year, but he then got juvenile arthritis. His immune system attacked his bones. He could barely walk. We got him on an IV, and he was better for a bit... But we ended up having to put him down.
Fuck pet stores, go rescue shelters.
Stopping all of the corporate Pet stores is a rather easy task too. All it takes is awareness as to what is going on behind the scenes.
My family adopted a dog from the local shelter, though we never had a correct estimate of her age at the time, we had a great 6-7 years with her, she always loved her sleep. She died around this time last year.

OP i'll keep your tips in mind if we ever get a new dog
I always get my dogs from the pound.
This post made me sad.
It should be illegal for people to sell puppies in a sick environment, trapped behind a glass window. They get about 5 feet to live in with 6 other puppies and aren't properly taken care of.
This sickens me.
Capitalism is a dirty business
Our friends had a litter and gave them away to family members but had one more dog. No one was taking her. She was a hyper little dog. She destroys things and ruin things.
but my little Layla is my baby. Every guy needs a dog.

People need to take care of their dog. Nuder them, give them proper shots. And do not support puppy mills.

Thanks. That is all I am going for with this thread.
I found my dog sleeping in some trash while on vacation one year. Little mutt stunk to high heaven and followed us all the way back to the cottage. Washed him off right on the beach, gave him a bunch of frankies (Spiced sausages) to wolf down and I've had him ever since.
you stole my dog

Her mother is 100% pit
Her father is a wide mix of a lot things. Not much is known about her dad as he was adopted.
Her mom weighs 90+ pounds and still thinks shes a lap dog. Layla crawls in my lap and goes to sleep, she weighs 63 pounds and thats to much pup for one lap

I thought it looked like she had some pit in her. I love those dogs, shame a few stupid owners get them a bad rep. My 70 pound over weight Husky thinks she is a lapdog. Sleeps on top of me if I lay down. I feel your pain.
My sister got a cat for a humane society, they said the cat was dropped off when the owner had to go to the hospital and they couldn't keep it anymore. He's 4 years old, we named him Steve.
He constantly goes into everything, and will eat anything edible. He's even taken a piece of steak off my sisters plate while she was watching TV. When we feed him, he just inhales it like he hasn't eaten in days (he also throws up from eating too fast), and he's skinny as a rail.
The previous owner was negligent, probably never fed him :frown:
@reardon_e12
Their sooo warmmmm. You don't need blankets. But stereotypes of pit bulls are all wrong. She is one of the nicest dogs I know. Pit bulls are extremely loving when raised right.

My Husky that I have mentioned before in the thread was my 90 year old great grandma's. She did what she could to take care of her, but when grandma died she spent almost a 6 months outside through the dead of winter. So poor Sadee rarely had water because it was always frozen when we brought her in she would not stop drinking water. Poor girl was so used to not knowing where her next drink might come from. She grew out of it eventually though.

I agree there. Just a few bad owners and they are stereotyped. Any dog can be raised to fight.
