I remember watching The Two Towers and Return of the King in cinemas and loving them. Then I bought and watched the Extended Editions of all three and was like :aaaaa: Out of every movie I've ever watched, this trilogy has the most awesome music and speeches. Especially in this scene.
I was just thinking of this a few days ago... I'm new to the series; do you guys recommend that I read the books then watch the movies or just watch the movies?
I watched the movies before reading the books. But if I recall I started with The Hobbit then read The Lord Of The Rings books. I either way would be fine. But I do suggest starting with the Hobbit if you do read the books.
I really hate how they just cut away the whole part with Tom Bombadil in the first movie.
I thank god for that. Tom Bombadil and his fucking singing nonsense all the time made me want to rip my eyeballs of with a screwdriver while reading the book.
Getting the theatrical versions on Blu Ray in April... Wish they'd release the extended cut along with it....
the theatrical versions? you mean the musical in london?
I thank god for that. Tom Bombadil and his fucking singing nonsense all the time made me want to rip my eyeballs of with a screwdriver while reading the book.
The Barrow Wights sounded awesome though.
It never caught my attention. I want to watch the movies but I can't be bothered when I find it boring.
I thank god for that. Tom Bombadil and his fucking singing nonsense all the time made me want to rip my eyeballs of with a screwdriver while reading the book.
Are you fucking kidding me? Tom Bombadil is the most badass motherfucker around. Most people would use petty shit like swords or arrows to kill monsters, not Tom fucking Bombadil, he just fucking sings that bitch to death.
the theatrical versions? you mean the musical in london?
Uh, the one they showed in the movie theater, not the sexy extended edition.....
I watched all the extended versions with my mom V:v:V
Can't wait for the hobbit movie.
I recently rewatched the whole extended series for the first time in years. And now that I'm older, I'm seeing a lot of plot holes in the movies. While still really good movies, some stuff just broke my suspension of disbelief. Such as when the Witch King [sp]corners Gandalf at Minas Tirith but he hears the Rohirrim about to flank Mordor's army. Why doesn't he just kill Gandalf? Is it really that imperative to fight off the Rohirrim that he couldn't take two seconds to kill the leader of the enemy army. [/sp] Another point is when Legolas [sp] informs Aragorn about the Army of the Dead, which is ostensibly an immortal and invulnerable army who Aragorn can command pretty much at will. Why doesn't Legolas say something at Helms Deep? You would think that it would cross his mind to say, "Oh hey, by the way there's an invincible army you can command that no mortal weapon can even fight against, just thought that might be useful when we're outnumbered 10:1." [/sp] And how [sp]Sauron gets tricked into emptying his entire base to defeat Aragorn at the Black Gates.[/sp] You would think that Sauron would leave a few guards near Mt. Doom considering that half of his army is more than enough to crush the entire army handily. This oversight is compounded by the fact that Sauron is played off as a master of subterfuge and trickery in the Silmarillion. Why didn't he see this coming? Did he really think the king of Men, who lead his army to two incredible military victories in the past few months would really do something so stupid?
I started to try to read the Silmarillion a few years ago, I'm on page 5.

For your second point - Aragorn didn't have the sword of elendil then, so he had no proof that he was the king of gondor. For your third - Sauron is overconfident and dumb, he probably thought that shelob and cirith ungol would be too much for the fellowship so he concentrated on the black gate. I'm not trying to blindly defend the films, but those aren't what i'd consider plot holes.
This is one of those series where I wish I could forget everything about so I could read and watch them as if they were new again. They're awesome.
The two towers should have won best picture not Return of the King, for the pure fact that Mystic River lost to Return of the King, also I liked TT over RotK

He wanted to make sure he crushed the King and the sword properly this time.
I watched all the extended versions with my mom V:v:V
I watched the first movie with my mom, and when it was over, she just said "Well, that was rather boring".

Just done watching LOTR1 with some friends :D Second one on Tuesday.
The trilogy is about to come to Blu-Ray. However, the extended versions won't come out for a while. I guess they are trying to milk money off the trilogy as much as they can. I'm definitely going to buy the extended editions on Blu-ray.
These movies kick ass. Especially the extended editions. It is kinda funny how one's voice automatically becomes louder when you're giving an inspirational speech.
I like how Aragorn's speech at the Black Gate's was pretty much saying "One day we're gonna get our asses kicked! BUT NOT TODAY!! One day everything you love will be fucked over, BUT NOT TODAY! TODAY! WE DO THE ASS KICKING!"
When I watched LOTR The fellowship in theaters in Canada on a skiing trip in Banff, I was fairly disappointed that it ended. One of the first movies where I was really disappointed it ended.

This is in no way a criticism of the books, they're awesome.

Finally got around to watching Fellowship of the Ring (extended 218 min) ...jesus is it long. And the random scary face on Bilbo was kind of uncalled for, it was two in the morning.

Saw Return of the King in theaters. It was the longest movie I had ever seen in a movie theater and because I didn't get up once during the whole movie, my back was completely fucked up from those terrible seats for about a week. So very worth it.
